One Piece Crews that Only Name the Captain

One Piece Crews that Only Name the Captain

Key Takeaways

  • There a many crews in One Piece‘s pirate adventure world, some with many and some with only a few prominent figures.
  • A few crews in particular have one very prominent main figure as their captain but lack any exploration beyond that.
  • The Drake Pirates are a good example of a crew that could be further fleshed out in the future.

As a seasoned veteran of the seas and a connoisseur of pirate lore, let me tell you, matesy, the tale of Captain Drake of the SWORD and his motley crew is as twisty as a corkscrew in a barrel of rum! This fellow’s got more layers than a croissant fresh from a Parisian bakery.

In the world of “One Piece,” the pirate crews play a significant role, being some of the most notable entities within the series. While an entire crew isn’t always thoroughly detailed, there are often several members besides the captain who are introduced, offering a broader perspective on the crew as a whole.

In many instances, not all crews in the series receive individual names. Instead, they often highlight one member and emphasize each team’s individual players, with their captains usually being the only consistently named ones. On several occasions, crews are left unnamed because the captain’s role is already significant enough within the storyline.

6 On Air Pirates

Captain: Scratchmen Apoo

One Piece Crews that Only Name the Captain
  • Debut: Chapter 498 (Manga), Episode 392 (Anime)
  • Main Ship: Stay Tune

Among ten teams, this particular crew’s captain earned a place within the infamous ‘Worst Generation’, a title laden with a certain degree of honor and respect among pirates. They seem to hail from the vast expanse known as the Grand Line, and their attire often reflects styles reminiscent of the Manchu people from history. The captain leading this crew is none other than Scratchmen Apoo, who stands alone in the Worst Generation as the sole longarm. Similar to their fellow Worst Generation crews, the On Air Pirates eventually faced the dominance of an Emperor, specifically Kaido of the Beasts Pirates.

Consequently, they decided to team up with his group, and later established a sham alliance with rival Worst Generation crews such as the Kid Pirates and the Hawkins Pirates, all in an attempt to recruit these crews into the Beasts Pirates. Apoo, however, seems to have no genuine allegiance towards the Beasts Pirates, primarily staying with them due to fear, and showing minimal, if any, true loyalty.

5 Brownbeard Pirates

Captain: Chadros “Brownbeard” Higelyges

One Piece Crews that Only Name the Captain
  • Debut: Chapter 581 (Manga), Chapter 490 (Anime)
  • Main Ship: Charles Martel

After the Summit War, my favorite crew stepped into the limelight following Whitebeard’s demise and his territory, Foodvalten, being claimed by Brownbeard. However, they suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of Basil Hawkins, the captain of the formidable Hawkins Pirates, one of the infamous 12 pirates known as the Worst Generation.

Following their arrival at Punk Hazard, Trafalgar D. Water Law utilized his abilities to rescue the crew and change them into centaurs. They subsequently found themselves under Caesar Clown’s command, admiring both him and Law. However, Brownbeard eventually uncovered that Caesar was exploiting them. Regrettably, the crew (except for Brownbeard) were subjected to Shinokuni, a dangerous petrifying gas. But after Caesar Clown’s downfall, Smoker grants Brownbeard permission to liberate his comrades before they succumb, on the condition that he surrenders himself.

4 Fallen Monk Pirates

Captain: Urouge

One Piece Crews that Only Name the Captain
  • Debut: Chapter 498 (Manga), Episode 392 (Anime)
  • Main Ship: Hanjomaru

The “Worst Generation” gang is believed to be from the floating archipelago called Sky Islands, but their specific island of origin remains undetermined. Living up to their name, the “Fallen Monk” pirates often dress in robes similar to those worn by religious figures. One member, whose identity is unknown, even sports a tonsure – a hairstyle common among monks where the head’s top hair is shaved. Their captain goes by the enigmatic title of ‘Mad Monk’ Urouge. Not much else is known about him except for his possession of an unnamed Devil Fruit power and his constant, enigmatic smile.

Although their crew names suggest a departure from traditional norms, there are hints that they hold some religious sentiments. For instance, Urouge prayed for Kaido when he attempted suicide. This group managed to outrank an Emperor’s highest-tier officer, as Charlotte Snack, a Big Mom Pirates Sweet Commander, was demoted following her defeat against Urouge. Yet, they were compelled to withdraw after facing and losing to another Sweet Commander, Cracker.

Even though it remains uncertain whether the crew’s development will extend further than their current state, it seems reasonable to anticipate that Urouge might undergo more significant development within the narrative. This is because he is currently the sole individual among the Worst Generation who has yet to encounter Luffy.

3 Space Pirates

Captain: Seamars

One Piece Crews that Only Name the Captain
  • Debut: Chapter 438 (Manga; Cover Story)
  • Main Ship: Unknown

The Space Pirates are an alien crew who tend to resemble animals in appearance. Their known piracy tends to consist of excavating the moon. They are only shown in the cover story, Enel’s Great Space Operations, serving as its effective antagonists. The Space Pirates previously caused an explosion on the moon, killing one Doctor Tsukimi from shock-induced suffocation. His creations, four automata, decided to travel to the moon to take revenge, but they were no match for the Space Pirates.

In a turn of events, Enel successfully reactivates one of the four robots, named Spacey. This robot guides him to Captain Seamars, a pirate who previously defeated him. Enel harbors deep contempt for Seamars due to his alleged desecration of the moon. With his unique Logia Devil Fruit abilities, he effortlessly subdues Seamars. In an aggressive move, Enel then attacks not just the captain but the entire crew, effectively ceasing their lunar activities. Having reclaimed the moon, Fairy Vearth, a revered place in his people’s legends, Enel now rules it with his newly activated automatons serving as his subordinates.

2 Drake Pirates

Captain: X Drake

One Piece Crews that Only Name the Captain
  • Debut: Chapter 498 (Manga), Episode 392 (Anime)
  • Main Ship: Liberal Hind

Born to a former marine turned pirate, X Drake initially sailed with his father’s crew but later defected to become a marine himself. Guided by a former Fleet Admiral named Sengoku, he eventually achieved the rank of rear admiral. Yet, he ultimately reverted to piracy, establishing the Drake Pirates, which became part of the infamous Worst Generation crews. The design of his crew leans towards a European theme, often appearing as if they are skilled fencers.

As a cunning gamer navigating the virtual world of One Piece, I’ve always admired Drake, the pirate who once dared to challenge Kaido by targeting one of his cherished territories. The goal was clear: provoke the fearsome Yonko. After that audacious act, Drake managed to climb the ranks within the Beasts Pirates, earning himself the prestigious title of Tobiroppo, the third-highest position in the crew.

In reality, it’s been discovered that Drake holds the position of Captain for SWORD, a covert operations team made up of former marines. They carry out missions in secret, at the behest of the World Government. His alliance with Luffy was partly due to his respect for Koby, another member of SWORD. It’s uncertain if his pirate persona aligns with his duties in SWORD, as it’s plausible that his crew might also be part of SWORD, but since this hasn’t been confirmed, it remains equally likely they are unaware of the truth. Drake was recently spotted recuperating in a marine hospital, adding more complexity to whether he can continue his pirate life.

1 Most Subordinate Crews

Captain: Various

One Piece Crews that Only Name the Captain
  • Debut: Varies on the basis of character, introduced conceptually around Chapter 551 (Manga) and Episode 460 (Anime)
  • Main Ship: Varies on the basis of character

Underlying teams refer to groups who work under a superior team. These teams are often employed by rulers to strengthen their authority and dominance. The individuals within these teams aren’t officially part of the team they serve, as each group retains its own leadership structure. However, the nature of their association with the team they serve can differ based on which team holds the upper hand at a given time.

At Marineford, the lower-ranking crews associated with Whitebeard were extensively displayed for the first time during the Summit War. Apart from the division commanders and fellow crew members of Whitebeard, numerous subordinate crews also joined the fray. Among the subordinates commanded by Whitebeard were Little Oars Jr., Whitey Bay, A O, Squard, and others. Furthermore, some of these subordinate captains had once been pirates under Whitebeard before they founded their own separate crews.

As a loyal follower, I can attest that the Peachbeard Pirates, under my ship’s command, are the only recognized underlings of the infamous Blackbeard Pirates. We’ve proven our mettle by overpowering the marines guarding the Lulusia Kingdom, but alas, we were brought low by no less than four officers from the Revolutionary Army. It is said that our formidable leader, Blackbeard, holds his crew in little regard.

The Red-Haired Pirate group has a tendency to have less powerful crew members. For instance, there are crews such as the Bourgeois Pirates (headed by Pururu), the Social Club (led by Fugar), and the Puddle Pirates (directed by Gerotini). It’s plausible that Shanks is trying to leverage his standing to safeguard them, similar to how Whitebeard shielded his territories. Nevertheless, at this point, this is all just speculation.

It’s important to mention that not every subordinate crew falls into this category. The Sun Pirates and Fire Tank Pirates, though once part of Big Mom’s crew, have several identified members because they played significant roles in the story. Similarly, all seven crews in the Straw Hat Grand Fleet also have multiple named members for the same reason – their importance to the narrative.
