Summary
- Pirate crews in One Piece often possess high numbers of Devil Fruit powers, tied to the benefits of the abilities.
- The Beasts Pirates led by Kaido have over 500 Devil Fruit users, including Ancient and Mythical Zoan types.
- The Big Mom Pirates under Linlin have a culinary theme, with Paramecia powers focused on food and cooking.
In the world of “One Piece”, individuals acquire unique abilities known as Devil Fruit powers by eating mysterious fruits shaped unlike any other, which ironically cause them to lose their swimming ability. Interestingly, these powers are often possessed by pirate crews, many of whom are adversaries to the Straw Hat Pirates. The high prevalence of these abilities might be due to the valuable benefits they offer.
In contrast to some crews who entirely avoid the power of Devil Fruits, there are other groups where the vast majority of their key members possess these supernatural abilities granted by Devil Fruits. Among all the pirate crews in the series, these particular ones hold the most Devil Fruit powers collectively.
Many of the crews mentioned are no longer as popular as they once were, so the actual number of Devil Fruit users in these crews might be less than what’s shown on the list.
5. Baroque Works
10 Devil Fruit Users
- Devil Fruit Type Ratio: 7 Paramecia, 2 Zoan, 1 Logia
Baroque Works was a criminal organization established by Crocodile for the purpose of seizing control over Alabasta. The group was notably characterized by its high number of members possessing Devil Fruits, with the majority of those holding such fruits occupying ranks of Officer Agent and above. Within this group, pairs of agents were strategically matched based on their complementary abilities, often linked to their unique Devil Fruit powers that made them formidable opponents in close combat. For instance, Daz Bonez (Mr. 1) and Zala (Miss Doublefinger), both adept brawlers, used their Devil Fruits to create challenging battle scenarios.
Mr. 0, a crocodile character, possessed an exceptional Logia-type power known as the Suna Suna no Mi, enabling him to generate, assume, and control sand. This made him particularly challenging for Luffy to defeat, as he could turn into sand to dodge most attacks. However, his weakness was liquid, which played a crucial role in Luffy’s strategy against him, using blood drawn from their past encounters to ultimately defeat him. Characters like Drophy (Miss Merry Christmas) and Lassoo (a sentient bazooka) were Zoan type, capable of transforming into a mole and a dachshund respectively. Interestingly, Lassoo was the first documented case in the series of an inanimate object consuming a Zoan Devil Fruit to gain self-awareness. The majority of other Devil Fruit users wielded Paramecia powers, a category encompassing all non-Zoan or Logia abilities and being the most prevalent type of power.
As an avid fan, I’m excited to share that among our dynamic team of Officer Agents, it’s me, Babe (also known as Mr. 4), and Marianne, aka Miss Goldenweek, who haven’t indulged in the transformative power of Devil Fruits. Instead, my unique abilities stem from a blend of my raw physical prowess and Lassoo’s extraordinary capabilities. Unlike others, Marianne employs her exceptional painting skills to ensnare foes with her Colors Trap, serving as a strategic support for Galdino, our esteemed Mr. 3.
4. Blackbeard Pirates
12 Devil Fruit Users (But 13 Devil Fruit Powers)
- Devil Fruit Type Ratio: 9 Paramecia, 2 Mythical Zoan, 2 Logia
Ever since they rose to fame, the Blackbeard Pirates have been on a mission to acquire powerful Devil Fruits by brutally taking them from their original owners and then mysteriously seizing control. This strategy seems to be working, as all of their Ten Great Captains now exhibit supernatural abilities. However, the motive behind this remains unclear. Interestingly, only Marshall D. Teach has been known so far to consume two Devil Fruits, a phenomenon typically lethal. It is said that in normal circumstances, consuming two Devil Fruits is fatal. Yet, Teach possesses powers from not one but two types of Devil Fruits – a Logia (the Yami Yami no Mi), granting him the power to manipulate and control darkness, and a Paramecia (the Gura Gura no Mi), enabling him to generate tremors. He obtained this latter power after slaying his former captain, Edward “Whitebeard” Newgate.
Moreover, it’s worth mentioning the existence of Mythical Zoans, which are special types of Zoans that enable their users to metamorphose into mythological creatures. For instance, Catarina Devon’s Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Kyubi no Kitsune, enables her to transform into a nine-tailed fox and mimic other people’s appearances. On the other hand, Stronger (Doc Q’s horse) possesses the Uma Uma no Mi, Model: Pegasus, which grants him the ability to transform into a pegasus. However, since he is already a horse, this transformation primarily gives him wings.
As an observer, it’s clear that not all users obtained their Devil Fruits through the violent campaign we’ve witnessed. Members like Kuzan and Sanjuan Wolf already possessed their unique Devil Fruit powers before this event took place. Interestingly, Laffitte seems to have wielded a power reminiscent of a Devil Fruit since his days in the crew, which predates the targeting of other users for their abilities. However, it remains uncertain if any members below the rank of captain possess Devil Fruit powers. This ambiguity could be due to the limited focus on these characters within the narrative.
3. Donquixote Pirates
17 Devil Fruit Users
- Devil Fruit Type Ratio: 15 Paramecia, 2 Logia
The pirate group known as the Donquixote Pirates derives its name from their leader, Donquixote Doflamingo, a former Celestial Dragon with a grudge against the world who aims to reclaim power. Initially granted his unique Devil Fruit ability and a pistol by an elderly man who would later become his trusted associate, codenamed Trebol, this power – the Ito Ito no Mi – enables him to manipulate strings, controlling others and eventually transforming his environment into string too.
Among the Devil Fruits wielded by their crew, none might be as chilling as the Hobi Hobi no Mi. This Devil Fruit was consumed by Sugar, a trusted lieutenant of Doflamingo for quite some time. The Hobi Hobi no Mi grants her the power to transform humans into mechanical toys and bind them under contracts similar to Isaac Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics. Additionally, it comes with peculiar side effects such as wiping memories about the transformed individuals from others’ minds and halting Sugar’s own aging. This unique ability was instrumental in their crew’s rule, enabling them to exploit unrecorded forced labor and maintain a firm grip on Dressrosa. However, this control was broken when Usopp intervened by knocking out Sugar, causing the transformed toys to regain their human form once more.
2. Big Mom Pirates
17 Devil Fruit Users
- Devil Fruit Type Ratio: 15 Paramecia, 2 Zoan
The Big Mom Pirates are a group that was established by Charlotte Linlin. This crew has numerous offspring, some of whom hold significant roles. Big Mom possesses the Soru Soru no Mi, a unique ability that allows her to control lifespans in various ways. She can seize lifespans from those who fear her and transfer them to inanimate items, transforming them into intelligent “homies” – a group of her loyal subordinates. Additionally, she can imbue specific objects with her own spirit, creating exceptionally powerful homies.
In the crew, many of the Devil Fruit abilities have some connection to culinary arts, either involving dishes, ingredients, or cooking methods. For instance, Katakuri can manipulate mochi, Smoothie can juice things, and Cracker specializes in biscuits. Streusen, one of Boa Hancock’s initial crew members, possesses a Devil Fruit that allows him to transform any object into food. Interestingly, the food produced by this power is said to have an unpleasant taste, mirroring the typical nature of Devil Fruits. However, it’s ironic because Streusen himself is known for being an excellent chef.
1. Beasts Pirates
Over 500 Devil Fruit Users
- Devil Fruit Type Ratio: 2 Paramecia, 2 Mythical Zoan, 9 Ancient Zoan, Over 500 Artifical Zoan (SMILE)
The Beast Pirates, a crew led by the villain Kaido from the world of One Piece, aimed to create an all-Zoan pirate crew due to his ambition and because Zoan Devil Fruits are rare. However, with over 20,000 Beast Pirates and fewer than 60 known Zoan Devil Fruits, it’s clear that Kaido didn’t achieve this goal. To remedy the situation, he formed a partnership with Donquixote Doflamingo, who provided artificial Zoan Devil Fruits called SMILEs. These SMILES granted users animal-like traits when successful and suppressed negative emotions when unsuccessful, earning them their name.
The Beast Pirates were divided into three groups based on their consumption of SMILES: Gifters (consumers of the 10% successful SMILES), Pleasures (consumers of the 90% failed SMILES), and Waiters (those who hadn’t consumed any SMILES). Unfortunately, the destruction of the SMILE factory means that no more SMILES are being produced.
Besides the SMILE abilities, Ancient Zoans were the most frequently observed Zoan variants. These powers enabled users to turn into prehistoric creatures, such as dinosaurs or extinct animals. All known users of these powers are part of the Beasts Pirates, holding either a Tobiroppo or All-Star position, which are the second highest ranks below Kaido. It’s been said that at least 8 out of the current 9 known Ancient Zoan users were gathered by Hanafuda, a Shichibukai who was allied with Kaido before his death. His children, Page One and Ulti, are among the Tobiroppo and can transform into a Spinosaurus and Pachycephalosaurus respectively. It’s important to note that Ancient Zoans aren’t limited to dinosaurs; they also include users like Jack who can turn into a mammoth, Who’s-who who can transform into a sabertooth tiger, and Black Maria who can transform into an extinct ancient spider known as rosamygale grauvogeli.
As the head of his pirate group, Kaido is capable of metamorphosing into the mythical Azure Dragon, a dragon revered across Eastern legends. Interestingly, Kaido’s long-lost son, Yamato, who eventually departed from the crew, acquired a Mythical Zoan. This unique ability enables him to transform into Okuchi no Magami, an interpretation of the extinct Japanese wolf that was once deeply revered in Japan. In addition to this wolf transformation, Yamato possesses the power to manipulate ice while in this form.
