One Piece: Critical Mass Haki, Explained

This post contains spoilers for One Piece.

The world of One Piece features two main types of power: Haki and Devil Fruits. While Devil Fruits were introduced early in the story, Haki wasn’t fully explained until after the timeskip. Characters with Haki abilities existed from the beginning, but their powers weren’t revealed to readers for quite some time.

Haki has become increasingly crucial to the story ever since the time skip. Even Kaido, a powerful character, stated that Haki is the strongest ability in the world and essential for anyone aiming for the top. While the author, Oda, originally presented three types of Haki, he’s consistently added new ways to use it. Recently, in the Elbaf arc, fans discovered another variation called critical mass Haki.

What Is Critical Mass Haki In One Piece?

Critical Mass Haki Increases The Power Of Attacks

  • Critical mass Haki was used by Garp and Roger
  • The Haki was able to bypass Xebec’s insane defense

In One Piece chapter 1165, Roger and Garp join forces to battle the transformed Xebec. Despite their best efforts, Xebec’s new form was incredibly strong, making it hard to break through his defenses. They realized they were running out of time – if they didn’t defeat him quickly, he would kill them and then target anyone else remaining on the island.

Fortunately, Roger had a plan to defeat Xebec. He explained to Garp that they needed to focus all their power into one massive attack. Garp understood immediately, and both of them pushed themselves to their absolute limits, pouring all their energy into their strikes. This concentrated effort infused their attacks with a powerful form of Haki, allowing them to break through Xebec’s defenses and finally overcome him.

Oda probably showed us advanced Haki during the flashback to prepare us for a future fight. Luffy and his crew might need this power to defeat the Holy Knights, who plan to destroy Elbaf and everyone who lives there. Currently, Luffy’s group doesn’t know how to use this advanced Haki, but Scopper Gaban could be the one to teach them. Gaban has already proven he can overcome the Holy Knights’ ability to heal quickly. If he trains Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, and Loki, they’ll have a chance against the Knights. The fate of Elbaf rests on Luffy’s success, so he absolutely has to win this fight.

Luffy Will Use Critical Mass Haki To Beat Imu

Luffy has fought many incredibly powerful enemies throughout his journey, and while they’ve all presented challenges, he’s overcome them with his determination and skills. However, none of his past opponents compare to Imu, the leader of the World Government. Though we’ve only seen a little of what Imu can do, most fans believe they are far stronger than anyone Luffy has faced before.

To defeat Imu, Luffy needs to get significantly stronger. A key step is fully mastering his Devil Fruit, the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika. This powerful fruit, linked to the legendary Joyboy, will be crucial in the fight. While Luffy can already use Gear 5th, he struggles with extreme fatigue and can’t maintain it for long. He needs to overcome these limitations before he’s ready to face Imu.

Beyond physical strength, Luffy needs to fully control Haki, a power shown to be the most reliable way to defeat Devil Fruit users. While Luffy has already learned all the main types of Haki and their advanced forms, there’s still more to discover – specifically, a powerful technique called critical mass Haki, which he hopefully will learn during the Elbaf arc. Even if he doesn’t master critical mass Haki, Luffy will need to find a way to overcome the incredible regenerative abilities of the Holy Knights and the Gorosei.
