One Piece: Every Inanimate Object With A Devil Fruit

One Piece: Every Inanimate Object With A Devil Fruit

As a seasoned One Piece fan, I have to say that these unique and fascinating characters have truly added a new dimension to the world created by Eiichiro Oda. From Alpacacino the nodding bazooka to Bunbuku the tea-less tanuki teapot, each of these inanimate object Zoans brings a fresh perspective to the series.

It’s been suggested that Zoan Devil Fruits possess their own will before they are eaten, which might account for the intriguing occurrence of inactive objects appearing to “eat” a Zoan. This supposed method of consuming was apparently uncovered by Dr. Vegapunk before the main storyline unfolded.

Just as creatures that consume a Zoan fruit acquire traits of the animal, inanimate objects may inherit characteristics of the animal whose Devil Fruit they’ve ingested. However, they also share the drawbacks common to living beings, such as susceptibility to pain, fear, and illness. Remarkably, these transformed objects often exhibit loyalty towards their owners.

6. Lassoo

Babe’s Bazooka

One Piece: Every Inanimate Object With A Devil Fruit

  • Devil Fruit: Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Dachshund
  • Debut: Chapter 160 (Manga), Episode 103 (Anime)

Babe, otherwise known as Mr. 4 in Baroque Works, is the first person noted to own a Zoan object. His dachshund bazooka, Lassoo, shoots explosive baseballs, weighing as much as cannonballs that Babe hits with his mighty 4-ton baseball bat. Lassoo is very obedient, and is willing to shoot when his owner asks. Since his escape from prison, Babe has realized his dream of becoming a pizza delivery boy, working as one in the recently re-opened Spiders Cafe. Lassoo serves as the cafe’s mascot.

It’s not clear exactly how Babe acquired Lassoo. Despite his physical prowess, Babe is quite dim-witted, even below Galdino in intelligence as acknowledged by Crocodile. The creation of a Zoan object might be simpler than it seems, given that it was recently introduced. If Zoans do have independent minds, it’s plausible that the Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Dachshund desired to take control of Babe’s gun on its own accord.

5. Funkfreed

Spandam’s Sword

One Piece: Every Inanimate Object With A Devil Fruit
  • Devil Fruit: Zou Zou no Mi
  • Debut: Chapter 365 (Manga), Episode 254 (Anime)

Spandam, contrary to his high-ranking positions in Cipher Pol 9 and 5, owes his success more to family connections than actual talent or merit. His coworkers dislike him intensely, and those who have suffered because of him and his father’s actions hold a deep resentment towards him. Despite being shielded by the World Government, he plotted against them and received minimal punishment when his rebellion fell apart. He is the second known proprietor of a Zoan artifact, owning an Elephant-themed sword called Funkfreed.

Funkfreed serves as Spandam’s sole buddy and potential guardian, given Spandam’s weak physical abilities. Spandam isn’t great with swords either, so Funkfreed doesn’t have much direct help during battles. Interestingly, just like his master, Funkfreed is quite timid and not a strong fighter. This cowardice is reflected in the elephant-shaped sword’s gentle and unassuming design. Although we don’t learn much about Funkfreed’s past, Spandam is depicted as having had an elephant pet during his childhood, suggesting a longstanding affection for these animals.

4. Smiley

Caesar Clown’s Toxic Gas

One Piece: Every Inanimate Object With A Devil Fruit
  • Devil Fruit: Sara Sara no Mi, Model: Axolotl
  • Debut: Chapter 668 (Manga), Episode 594 (Anime)

Caesar Clown was once a researcher partnered with Dr. Vegapunk; however, unlike his ethical counterpart, Caesar has a disregard for human life and is willing to risk others’ safety through his actions. Among his many dangerous experiments, Smiley was one of them. Originating as an illegitimate weapon of mass destruction, Caesar triggered it on Punk Hazard.

When Caesar came back to the island, he transformed the HS2 gas from the blast into a slimy substance, which he then gave to the Devil Fruit, resulting in the creation of Smiley. This demonstrates that Zoan Fruits can be ingested by things that aren’t entirely solid. Caesar chose to set free Smiley with the intention of eliminating the Straw Hat Pirates and the G-5 Marines who were on the island. Being purely toxic, it claimed the lives of Caesar’s troops when it was unleashed as well. However, it was neither vanquished nor fully neutralized by Luffy and his allies in the end.

Rather than taking the life of the entity directly, Caesar provided it with a treat resembling candy wrapping, which proved fatal. This action caused Smiley intense agony and resulted in its remains turning into a terrifying gas called Shinokuni. This event marked the first time an Inanimate Zoan character had “perished” in the series. Notably, a nearby apple transformed into a Devil Fruit upon Smiley’s demise, suggesting that the Sara Sara no Mi, Model: Axolotl may now be up for grabs by another.

3. Bunbuku

Kozuki Sukiyaki’s Teapot

One Piece: Every Inanimate Object With A Devil Fruit
  • Devil Fruit: Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Tanuki
  • Debut: Chapter 911 (Manga), Episode 894 (Anime)

As a devoted fan, I’d rephrase that statement as follows: Once upon a time, I was the Shogun of the magnificent Wano Country, known as Kozuki Sukiyaki. I was also the proud father of the late and greatly missed Kozuki Oden. After being deposed, I chose to lay low, adopting the alias Tenguyama Hitetsu. During my seclusion, I’ve had the privilege of mentoring the remarkable Kurozumi Tama, despite our clans’ past enmity. With Momonosuke claiming his rightful position as Shogun and reinstating power for the Kozuki clan, I’ve continued to hide my identity, only revealing myself to a select few. Now, as a hermit, I am the secret owner of the latest Zoan artifact in canon – a Tanuki Teapot named Bunbuku.

In contrast to all other known Zoan items, which are typically weapons, Bunbuku stands out as a simple teapot that belonged to Sukiyaki before its transformation. The name Bunbuku is derived from a Japanese folklore tale called “Bunbuku Chagama,” where a tanuki transforms into a teapot. Given its new life form, Bunbuku can no longer be used to boil water without causing it harm. Instead, it appears to serve as a companion to Sukiyaki and Tama, often joining one or the other at various stages of their story.

2. Alpacacino

Shuzo’s Bazooka

One Piece: Every Inanimate Object With A Devil Fruit
  • Devil Fruit: Currently Unnamed
  • Debut: Episode 575
  • Note: This character is non-canon

Originally part of the Neo Marines, a breakaway group led by ex-Admiral Z who believed the Marines were lenient towards pirates, Shuzo aspires to displace Ain from her second-in-command position despite losing to her in their power struggle. Consequently, he refuses to abide by her commands. Later, Shuzo was defeated by Luffy and apprehended by Vice Admiral Momonga, who stated he would be imprisoned at Impel Down.

Shuzo’s pet Alpaca goes by the name Alpacacino, much like Lassie. Despite transforming into an animal, Alpacacino still functions effectively as a bazooka for Shuzo. When needed, Alpacacino often shows agreement with a nod. However, he doesn’t shy away from voicing criticism towards Shuzo if it becomes necessary, like when their identity as Neo Marines was exposed. His name is believed to be an homage to the renowned American actor, Al Pacino.

1. Pato

Patrick Redfield’s Pen

One Piece: Every Inanimate Object With A Devil Fruit
  • Devil Fruit: Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Bake-danuki
  • Debut: One Piece: Unlimited World Red
  • Note: This character is non-canon

In his heyday, Patrick “Red” Redfield was known as a pirate on par with Roger and Whitebeard, but he’s not as famous due to having less of an enduring influence compared to them. Initially, Red was a Level 6 inmate at Impel Down, but he was accidentally set free by Teach during his attempt to recruit from the Level 6 prisoners for the Blackbeard Pirates.

Red’s long-term partner is named Pato, who is actually a character known as Bake-danuki Pen. Although Pato’s Devil Fruit shares some similarities with Bunbuku’s in origin, it stands out because it is a Mythical Zoan type, while Bunbuku’s Devil Fruit is based on the real-life Tanuki creature. With his tail, which resembles a pen tip, Pato can transform leaves into various objects and people by writing on them. Prior to Red’s imprisonment, Pato and he were separated. When Red managed to escape, he showed disrespect towards his former companion, assuming that Pato had deserted him.

After Monkey D. Luffy earns Red’s respect, Red decides to rekindle their friendship with Pato, who was Red’s alias when they were rookies. This suggests that Pato holds significant importance for Red. Interestingly, unlike most inanimate Zoans, Pato can talk.
