As a seasoned sailor and connoisseur of the high seas, I’ve had my share of encounters with some of the most notorious pirate crews that ever set foot on this vast ocean. Among them, there are those who stand out like a colossal giant among mere mortals – and Sanjuan Wolf, the sole giant among the Ten Titanic Captains of the Blackbeard Pirates, is one such example.
In the world of One Piece, Giants stand out as a significant race, often associated with immense power within the storyline. Despite being occasionally co-opted by the World Government for its forces, they are also frequently found among pirate crews. They either establish their own groups or integrate into existing ones.
As someone captivated by the immense power that giants possess, it’s no surprise that many dream of having them as part of our crew, even if it means upgrading our vessel to accommodate such towering figures. Let’s delve into the crews who have welcomed giants on board!
Only entities that can definitively be classified as ordinary pirates with known crews will appear on the list. This excludes any large-scale criminal elements that might resemble pirates but don’t fit the traditional definition of piracy.
7 Giant Warrior Pirates
Captain(s): Dorry & Broggy, Formerly Jarul & Jorul
Hailing from the island of Elbaf, this team adheres to its age-old customs of honorable warrior battles. They are known for their unique tradition of having two leaders concurrently. Currently, these two leaders, Dorry and Broggy, are renowned as something of an ancient legend. The Straw Hats encountered them on the island of Little Garden, where they were preparing to engage in a battle to the death to settle a disagreement over who was larger. However, when members of Baroque Works tried to capture them, the Straw Hats stepped in to assist Dorry and Broggy. Later, they were seen back on Elbaf, helping Shanks defeat the Kid Pirates by sinking their ship, the Victoria Punk. Although they have since returned to Elbaf to acquire more powerful weapons, there are indications that they intend to resume this battle at a later time.
Among the previous commanders of the crew, it was Jorul who met an unfortunate end at the hands of Charlotte Linlin, a young girl who grew up in an orphanage on the island. This tragic event led all giants to harbor resentment towards her, making her one of the few races that do not have a presence within her territory. Notable members of this crew also include Oimo and Kashii, who were initially deceived by the World Government into joining them. However, Usopp managed to uncover their deceit.
6 New Giant Warrior Pirates
Captain: Hajrudin
This pirate band primarily consists of young, colossal individuals; many were still children at the time when Jorul perished. The most renowned among them is their captain, Hajrudin, who once fought in the Corrida Colosseum for the Mera Mera no Mi. Despite his haughty nature, he acknowledged the kindness of the Straw Hat Pirates for rescuing them. He held up ‘God’ Usopp high so that those saved could see their benefactor with clarity.
Previously, Hajrudin and his team members had worked as mercenaries for Buggy’s Delivery, holding significant value within the organization. But, Hajrudin transformed their group into a pirate crew to be part of Luffy’s Grand Straw Hat Fleet – a group of pirates who appreciate Luffy and aspire to serve under him. Although Luffy sees them more as an alliance, the fleet takes their role as subordinates quite respectfully.
The newly active group known as the New Giant Warrior Pirates inspired a sort of spiritual resurgence among themselves, a team Hajrudin admired greatly during his upbringing. Interestingly, not just Hajrudin, but another member of this crew, Stansen the shipwright, had earlier encountered the Straw Hat Pirates. It was Silvers Rayleigh who liberated Stansen from a slave market, which happened when the Straw Hat Pirates were launching an attack on the same establishment.
5 Foxy Pirates (Formerly)
Captain: Foxy
The Foxy Pirates were a large group consisting of seasoned pirates, each with unique talents from diverse crews. One of their members, whose origins are uncertain, goes by Big Pan. He’s a Wotan, a being half-fishman and half-giant. His hybrid physique lends him a more humanoid appearance compared to his full-blooded fish-men counterparts. Notably, Big Pan is the only known Wotan in the canonical series.
In simpler terms, Big Pan took part in the Davy Back Fights, a customary pirate practice by the Foxy Pirates where they stole crew members from other ships they encountered. During one such fight, Pan was paired with Hamburg and Pickles for the Groggy Ring event, where they faced off against Zoro and Sanji. Despite having a friendlier dynamic than their opponents, the trio lost when Zoro and Sanji decided to get more focused.
Big Pan, joined by most of the Foxy Pirates, has left the group, possibly having been enticed away during a Davy Back Fight. One of the original crew members, Hamburg, remains with only three others, as demonstrated in the Final Saga.
4 Thriller Bark Pirates (Formerly)
Captain: Gecko Moria
Gecko Moria had earned a reputation as a pirate prior to being defeated by Kaido, who left only Moria alive among his crew. Subsequently, Moria opted to form a crew composed of zombies, finding it easier to detach emotionally when they perished. This strategy served him well initially, leading to Morie’s elevation as a warlord, although not an exceptionally effective one. Among Moria’s strongest undead was Oars, an ancient giant brought back to life using the shadow of Monkey D. Luffy.
In a bygone era, Oars towers over other giants, being colossal in size. He’s also a unique zombie, impervious to pain. Yet, this trait had its drawbacks, as he was often unmindful of the injured areas on his body. After enduring relentless assaults from the majority of the Straw Hat Pirates, Oars eventually lost Luffy’s shadow, which Arlong exploited to enhance himself with Shadow’s Asgard.
3 Blackbeard Pirates
Captain: Marshall D. Teach
At one point, Blackbeard belonged to the Whitebeard Pirates; however, he later deceived and betrayed a superior within the group, seizing a Devil Fruit in the process as part of an intricate plan. This strategy allowed him to covertly assemble his dream team while keeping himself under the radar. At first, his crew consisted of just four members, but upon being recognized as a warlord, he leveraged his status to tour Impel Down – a penal institution for infamous pirates. There, Blackbeard orchestrated gladiator-style fights among the lowest-ranking prisoners, with the victors earning a place in his crew.
One survivor was Sanjuan Wolf, a colossal figure originally from the West Blue. Unlike some of his crewmates, Wolf appears rather peaceful in nature. He seems to dislike combat and has never actively engaged in any known battles. Contrary to others, he did not take part in the assassination of Whitebeard. Despite the questionable actions of his comrades, Wolf remains loyal to them as they amass power. At present, he stands alone as the only giant among the Ten Titanic Captains, top-ranking officers within the Blackbeard Pirates.
What makes Wolf intimidating is his special fruit, the Deka Deka no Mi, which transforms him into a colossal giant. His own crew members often prefer to keep him resting, given the risk of rousing him due to the immense danger he poses. Unintentionally, Wolf can leave a trail of destruction wherever he goes, causing viewers to ponder just how formidable he becomes when he’s truly ready for battle.
2 Little Pirates
Captain: Little Oars Jr.
This team is among several who acted as supporting crews for the Whitebeard Pirates. Their leader is Little Oars Jr., a giant of ancient lineage related to Oars. He was acquainted with Ace, and like most of Whitebeard’s troops, joined them during the Summit War in an effort to rescue him.
The remaining team members aren’t towering giants, but rather humans of average size who mimic their captain’s appearance. They do this by wearing false jaws and wigs styled to resemble his long, red hair. Similar to many pirates associated with Whitebeard, their post-Summit War status remains uncertain for now.
1 Beasts Pirates
Captain: Kaido
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but be captivated by the tales of the Beasts Pirates, once seen as a formidable force challenging the World Government. Their feared captain, Kaido, was always on the hunt for fresh talent to bolster his crew. Not only did he manage to recruit several former captains and their crews, but he also acquired an extraordinary group – the Numbers. These aren’t just any giants; they are artificially created ancient ones from Punk Hazard. Talk about upping the ante!
Despite matching the stature and lifespan of their counterparts, they were deemed unsuccessful. They bear a resemblance to ancient giants in appearance, but often exhibit animalistic characteristics. When it comes to intelligence, they aren’t the sharpest tools in the box, and they have a propensity for drinking, which weakens their physical prowess. However, they are stronger than the common crew members, although not nearly as formidable as more skilled pirates.
