Key Takeaways
- Kaido is an Oni, possibly with ancient giant ancestry, known for forcibly recruiting powerful pirates with diverse species.
- Kaido’s crew includes the last known Lunarian, King, a cyborg Queen, Fish-Men Jack and Sasaki, and various human castes.
- Longarm Apoo, Mink Faust, and Numbers, failed artificial ancient giants, all play varying roles in bolstering Kaido’s Beasts Pirates.
As a seasoned One Piece enthusiast who has witnessed countless pirate alliances rise and fall, I must say that the Beasts Pirates under Kaido’s command have certainly piqued my interest. Among the newcomers, the cowardly opportunist Apoo seems to be a familiar face in the world of piracy, always seeking to align himself with the strongest power for his own gain.
The Beast Pirates are the group controlling Wano Country. Their leader, Kaido, serves both as their founder and governor-general. These Beast Pirates functioned like enforcers to maintain Shogun Kurozumi Orochi’s control over the land. However, Kaido has personal ambitions; he aims to wage war against the World Government after building a strong military force. To achieve this, he compelled several powerful pirate crews to join him, enhancing his own power in the process. Consequently, his crew became a mix of various types of pirates that are not commonly found elsewhere.
8 Oni (?)
The Unclear Species of Kaido
In the world of One Piece, it’s common to encounter humans with unique physical traits that deviate from norms. The case of Beasts Pirates Captain Kaido, however, presents a challenge due to his horned appearance. It’s unclear whether he belongs to a different species or is simply an exceptionally powerful human. This ambiguity is heightened by the fact that he is referred to as an “Oni” and “The World’s Strongest Creature,” suggesting he might not be fully human, or even human at all, without official confirmation.
Some people suggest that Kaido could be part of the legendary Buccaneer tribe, known for its members who are descendants of giants. More precisely, it is believed that Kaido has ancestry tracing back to ancient giants, as he exhibits many of their physical traits. Interestingly, some of his followers have horns, with Black Maria being a notable example due to her towering height similar to Kaido’s. For now, the nature of their species remains unclear.
7 A Lunarian
Kaido’s Right Hand
Hailing from the Red Line, a place once famed for being the home of the World Nobles at Mary Geoise, the lunarians were a species that are mostly extinct now, with their cause of extinction still shrouded in mystery. Distinguished by their capacity to ignite fire, their grand black-feathered wings, and remarkable toughness, they bear resemblance to humans, but with brown complexion and silver-white hair. The only known remaining lunarian is King (formerly Alber), a longstanding ally of Kaido.
In Punk Hazard, both King and Kaido were jailed and subjected to experiments. When they managed to escape, Kaido started assembling his crew, with King becoming its initial recruit. King vowed not to lose any fights until Kaido claimed the title of Pirate King, but he eventually broke this pledge following a defeat at Zoro’s hands. Despite this failure, King appears to have maintained a top position within Kaido’s crew for most of their time together. Among the All-Stars, the three strongest pirates under Kaido in the crew, King was the most powerful member.
6 Cyborgs
Kaido’s Left Hand, and a few other parts too
Among all pirate-themed series, it’s likely that One Piece boasts the highest number of cyborg characters. These characters, frequently equipped with prosthetic weapons, often undergo such modifications due to severe injuries they’ve sustained or their affinity for technology and mechanical tinkering.
In simpler terms, the Queen character is a prime example of a cybernetic organism (cyborg) within Kaido’s group. He was associated with an underground research facility called MADS, working alongside Dr. Vegapunk. By combining his mechanical skills with the advanced technology from Germa 66, he possesses many powers similar to those held by the Vinsmoke siblings in their battle suits. Most of Queen’s body has been artificially enhanced, providing him with a technological advantage to complement his already formidable physical strength. It is important to note that Queen isn’t the only cyborg in Kaido’s crew; another character named Scotch also holds this title and serves as a guardian on one of Kaido’s favorite islands.
5 Fish-Men
Top Brass
In simpler terms, Fish-Men are beings with human torsos and features resembling fish from the waist down. Interestingly, the specific lineage of Fish-Men isn’t strictly genetic as different species can share a common ancestry. They often coexist with mermaids and mermen, who have similar traits but with their fish-like characteristics located below the waist, unlike Fish-Men.
It appears that both these creatures predominantly originate from Fish-Man Island, yet many can be found beyond its borders. On land, Fish-Men possess ten times the strength of humans, and underwater, their power is even greater. Communities and groups of Fish-Men can be discovered outside the island, but it’s not uncommon for pirates to sail with primarily human crews. Given their impressive strength as a species, it’s logical that Kaido would consider recruiting them.
In his camp, Jack, who’s part of his elite team called All-Stars and is the weakest among them, and Sasaki, one of the Tobiroppo, or Kaido’s top six officers excluding the All-Stars, are the two significant Fish-Men. It’s speculated that their fish-like abilities might have been somewhat diminished due to Kaido, who seems to be assembling a crew primarily composed of Zoan-type Devil Fruit users (if they didn’t acquire and consume these powers on their own). Since Devil Fruits render their users immobile underwater, which is the Fish-Men’s preferred environment, this move appears unusual. However, their land-based physical prowess was strong enough for Kaido to consider them among his strongest warriors.
4 Humans
The Majority of the Crew
In the world of One Piece, humans, like us, don’t have unique abilities or powers that set them apart. Kaido finds this a shortcoming given his ambition for a pirate crew comprising only Zoans. Since Devil Fruits, especially Zoan ones, are not widespread enough to fulfill this dream, Kaido opted for SMILES instead – manufactured Zoans. These SMILES often modify human bodies with additional animal features, such as extra limbs (like Speed’s) or an extra head (as Holed’em’s is on his abdomen).
The members of the crew are categorized based on their connection to consuming a substance called SMILE. There are three main groups: Gifters, who consumed a SMILE and developed animal characteristics; Pleasures, who have not been given a functional SMILE but bear a permanent smile and cannot fully express negative emotions; and Waiters, who for various reasons will never consume a SMILE. Interestingly, if Kaido’s entire crew had taken effective SMILES, it could have expedited their downfall. Tama has the ability to control those who ate SMILES due to her possession of the Kibi Kibi no Mi, as they are now partially animal in nature.
3 A Longarm
The Informant
The Longarm People are human-like entities characterized by their double-jointed arms. Historically, they have faced some form of prejudice and are particularly valued by slavers. Their extended limbs grant them enhanced physical power during conflicts. It’s worth noting that there are certain groups within the Longarms who don’t get along with a group called the Longleg Tribe. However, it’s important to mention that interbreeding between Longarms and Longlegs has occurred in some instances, as well as unions between Longarms and humans in the past.
Apoo, known as one of the Twelve Rookie Pirates from the infamous Worst Generation, is unique due to his long arm feature. He joined forces with the Beasts Pirates first, then created alliances with two other crews linked to the Worst Generation – the Kid Pirates and the Hawkins Pirates. His objective was to provoke them into attacking Kaido, hoping they would ultimately merge with the Beasts Pirates. Apoo’s character is portrayed as more of a cunning opportunist, associating with Kaido out of fear but willing to betray him if it serves his interests better.
2 A Mink (?)
Via A Subordinate Crew
On an elephant-backed island named Zou called home to creatures resembling humans yet closely related to minks, known as Zounians. These beings share some characteristics with fish-men, where their animal ancestry isn’t strictly defined by genetics. They possess the ability to generate electricity called ‘electro’, and when they gaze upon the moon, they can transform into a potent form known as sulong. With their warrior spirit and animalistic traits, one might think they would be right at home among the ranks of the Beast Pirates.
Despite their longstanding animosity, stemming from the Kozuki clan’s past backing by the minks, Jack in particular often clashes with the Mink Tribe, as evident in his military actions against Zou and encounters with multiple minks. Surprisingly, amidst all these conflicts, there’s a chance one of them may have aligned with Kaido.
Faust is a black cat-like creature and sorcerer, who’s a key member of the Hawkins Pirates (apart from its captain). However, due to Apoo’s deliberate betrayal, the Hawkins crew was assimilated into the Beasts Pirates. In the Wano arc, Faust hasn’t made an appearance yet, but it’s probable that he was with his crew at that time since their captain was. Unlike Zou, Faust is believed to hail from the South Blue region.
1 Numbers
Artificial Ancient Giants
In the One Piece series, Giants are a dominant, crucial race for any significant power. They are massive, incredibly strong, and boast longevity, with a century-old Giant being considered rather young. Among their types, there are the ancient giants, resembling ogres in appearance. So far, only two of these have been featured in the series, both prior to a certain event, yet they left an indelible mark. Ancient Giants are notably larger and stronger than regular ones, with Little Oars Jr. even facing off against several Giant Marines.
As a gamer, I stumbled upon an intriguing tale in Punk Hazard, once home to the mighty Kaido. Scientists there had been tinkering with ancient giants’ DNA, aiming to resurrect them. These new creations bore a striking resemblance to their ancestral counterparts, towered over others, and seemed almost immortal, with some being over a century old. However, they were deemed failures, but the reasons behind this were never explained. Yet, these misfits found a home under Kaido, presumably to beef up his crew’s power. This is believed to be when they were first recognized as the Numbers.
Each number character in this context is named using kanji that corresponds to their specific number. These characters may be depicted as less intelligent, prone to alcohol, and potentially not as powerful as their natural counterparts, but stronger than common soldiers. In terms of appearance, they often resemble various animals, aligning with the Beasts Pirates theme. However, only one of them, Fuga, has ingested a SMILE, an act that earned him criticism from Kaido and bullying by other artificial giants.
