Despite the recent return of the One Piece anime, fans of Sanji and those who appreciate a true-to-life adaptation of the One Piece manga have been feeling quite displeased this week.
Toei Animation, the studio known for animating the One Piece anime, has found itself in a controversy due to certain daring decisions they made in the latest two episodes of One Piece that were released over the weekend, significantly altering Sanji’s character.
Sanji’s Mishandling in The Anime
Toei Adds Scenes That Never Happened in the Manga That Ruin Sanji’s Image
Sanji consistently ranks high among fan favorites in the series “One Piece,” often appearing in the top five, or even the top three, due to a valid reason. This is because Sanji is unquestionably one of the most skillfully crafted characters within “One Piece.” Moreover, fans are captivated by his exceptional combat abilities, which position him as one of the strongest members of the Straw Hat Pirates.
Generally speaking, enthusiasts of Sanji’s manga character seldom voice dissatisfaction. But lately, viewers of “One Piece” have expressed discontent due to certain debatable decisions taken by Toei Animation in the animated series.
Indeed, the One Piece anime has come back with two new episodes, numbers 1123 and 1124, and the conflict involving Sanji continues to escalate, causing quite a stir.

In one instance, Sanji was absent from a prominent double-page spread adaptation in the Egghead Island arc’s anime version. This scene, which featured many characters in the manga, seemed unusual because it excluded Sanji. Some viewers might suggest that he was removed due to his background position, but this theory doesn’t hold water when considering other characters like Franky who were even more obscured, yet remained in the animated adaptation.
In a somewhat contentious move, Toei depicted Sanji with smitten expressions towards Jewelry Bonney. This could potentially harm Sanji’s character image because, unbeknownst to him at the time, Bonney is only 12 years old. While some fans might contend that this doesn’t matter since he wasn’t aware of her age during the story, it’s important to note that Oda ensured Sanji behaved appropriately around Bonney in the manga. This inappropriate depiction by Toei is indeed an unusual decision, as such behavior was never portrayed in the original comic.
A highly debated modification took place during Sanji’s battle against S-Shark, which was portrayed quite differently in the anime and manga. In the anime, it appeared as though Sanji was taking a lot of damage, even ending up on his knees. However, this was not the case in the manga; instead, Sanji held his own against S-Shark and actually put the shark in a tough spot. The anime creators, Toei Animation, added an element where Nami saves Sanji using her bubble gun, a scene that never happened in the original manga. In truth, it was Sanji who saved Nami during this fight.
On previous occasions, Toei has been known to incorporate excess, even detrimental filler content that alters or skews events from the manga, notably in the case of Sanji.
