This article contains spoilers from One Piece’s Egghead anime.
Summary
- Toei Animation’s recent One Piece episodes upset fans with unnecessary changes, especially in Sanji’s storyline.
- Characters are unnecessary altered, storylines don’t make sense, and the adaptation strays from the One Piece manga.
- Despite fan backlash, fans should remember the anime is an adaptation and should not harass the staff for choices made.
The much-anticipated comeback of the “One Piece” anime has stirred up some debates among fans. Following a significant hiatus, devoted “One Piece” enthusiasts find themselves dissatisfied with the adaptations made by Toei Animation in the anime version, which often seem illogical and detract from the narrative coherence of “One Piece.” This confusion leaves those who solely follow the anime struggling to grasp the true essence of the series.
One Piece Fans Are Not Happy With The Two Newest Episodes
Toei Makes Unnecessary Changes to Sanji’s Parts of the Story
Fans of the popular series “One Piece” haven’t been overly satisfied with the latest episodes, particularly episodes 1123 and 1124 that signaled the resumption of the “One Piece” anime following a hiatus of six months.
The episodes were intended to excite fans following a lengthy hiatus, but instead, many fans expressed dissatisfaction over how Toei was managing the One Piece anime. Despite the animation being visually impressive, the adaptation of the One Piece manga lacks faithfulness. Fans have often pointed out that Toei adds superfluous content without reason, while at other times it distorts the narrative and becomes illogical.
In these latest episodes, it’s been the character of Sanji, who is a beloved fan favorite, that has sparked some discontent among viewers. Instead of Sanji saving Nami during his fight against S-Shark as depicted in the manga, it was Nami who ended up rescuing him using her bubble gun. Additionally, Sanji’s feelings for Bonney, a character whom Oda intentionally did not give romantic inclinations to in the original work, were portrayed as strong. This development was unexpected because these romantic feelings between Sanji and Bonney were never shown in the manga.
One Piece Fans Have Also Brought Up Old Mishandling of the Anime From Toei
Previous Events In Egghead, Zoro’s Conqueror’s Haki Reveal, and Much More
Fans have expressed their disappointment with how Toei portrayed Sanji in the anime, but it’s important to note that this isn’t the first instance where Toei has altered the storyline from the manga.
In earlier episodes of the anime, Sanji encountered battles with S-Shark, which were not part of the original manga storyline. This unexpected and peculiar decision to introduce this fight caused quite a stir among fans.
The anime prematurely showed Zoro using his Conqueror’s Haki against lesser opponents, which was not part of the original plan and detracted from the impact of the actual revelation of this powerful ability. By doing this early on, they spoiled the surprise and diminished its significance.
From my perspective as an avid fan, I couldn’t help but marvel at the scene where Prometheus, our solar character, took a plunge into the ocean to rescue Big Mom. Now, let me clarify, water is not his friendly neighborhood, it’s his kryptonite if you will. A dip in the ocean could have spelled doom for him. At times, it seems as though the scriptwriters might be unaware of the intricacies of their own characters, which is indeed unfortunate.
In the anime adaptation, there was an inconsistency in the plotline concerning the Big Mom Pirates and particularly Cracker, when compared to the Blackbeard Pirates, specifically Van Augur and Kuzan. The anime portrayed Van Augur defeating Cracker’s Biscuit Soldiers, but this is illogical since those Biscuit soldiers were significantly stronger than Gear 4. However, it’s worth noting that in the same storyline, Van Augur struggled to get past Jean Bart on Winner Island.
Lately, in the world of Egghead anime, an interesting decision was made that caught my attention – S-Snake, one of the Serpahims, appears significantly lighter skinned compared to her counterparts, and it seems this change wasn’t driven by any particular narrative reason. This shift, along with the persistent portrayal of young characters like Bonney in a sexualized manner, which was never present in the manga, feels quite unusual and unexpected.
The One Piece Anime Is Only An Adaptation
Fans Should Not Harass The Staff
Although some changes in the adaptation may not be well-received, fans should keep in mind that the manga and anime have different creative paths, with Oda delegating the adaptation to Toei, while he focuses on his own work. The decisions made by Toei, although debatable, should never prompt fans to bully or harass the artists or staff associated with the anime, as their choices are not motivated by hidden agendas. Japanese animators already face challenging working conditions and deserve respect.
