This article contains spoilers from One Piece’s Elbaf Arc.
Haki has long been a crucial element in the world of One Piece, but it’s become even more important since the timeskip. While Devil Fruits remain the main source of power, those who possess Haki are incredibly formidable. Haki is a spiritual energy everyone has, and it’s highly adaptable. It can sharpen senses, negate Devil Fruit powers, strengthen attacks and defense, and, in its most powerful form, completely overpower opponents.
In One Piece, most characters have some level of Haki, and the strongest ones have mastered advanced Haki, as we’ve seen in arcs like Whole Cake Island and Wano. However, recently, the author has shown that Haki can actually go beyond even that advanced level. This next stage of Haki requires a deep understanding of its core principles. By learning to control Haki effectively, a user can regulate the amount of power they release, essentially increasing its overall strength. This increased strength is crucial for battling opponents with powerful Haki or those who are difficult to defeat, like the Holy Knights or the Five Elders.
Oda Confirms Haki’s Next Level Requires Mass Control
Haki is a rare and challenging ability in the world of One Piece, but the strongest fighters have learned to use it effectively. It’s more than just adding power to attacks; as the author has demonstrated repeatedly, true mastery comes from control and efficiency.
It’s all about the mass, Garp! — Roger to Garp, One Piece 1165
As Scopper Gaban explained to Zoro, fully unlocking one’s power requires mastering Haki – and Zoro struggles with this. Simply having Haki isn’t enough; it needs to be used efficiently, or its impact is significantly reduced. Achieving true mastery demands both control and efficiency, a concept recently highlighted by Oda in One Piece chapter 1165 with a revelation about the sheer amount of Haki involved.
Fans already suspected Haki had a measurable weight that could be controlled. Now, Oda has officially confirmed that by adjusting Haki’s density, it’s possible to overcome abilities like immortality and even neutralize powerful forces like the Abyss.
The True Power Of Haki Can Only Be Brought Out By Mass Control
Once someone masters Haki control, they can adjust the amount they use and make it more efficient, minimizing wasted energy. In One Piece chapter 1165, Roger and Garp demonstrated exceptional Haki control, unleashing incredibly powerful Haki to overcome the barrier created by Rocks D. Xebec.
I heard Scopper Gaban tell Luffy to be careful with his Conqueror’s Haki. He warned him that the opponents they were facing weren’t invincible and that Luffy needed to consider that in how he fought.
It was only then they managed to seriously wound his seemingly indestructible body with overwhelming force. For the future, Luffy needs to improve his control over Haki. If he can focus more Haki into each attack, making it denser and more powerful, he’ll be able to overcome the Holy Knights’ ability to avoid harm.
Roger And Garp Were Haki Masters
Luffy isn’t quite as skilled with Haki yet. However, legends like Garp and Roger demonstrated incredible Haki control in their prime. Currently, Shanks is considered the strongest Haki user. Luffy is working towards reaching that level of mastery, but he still has a ways to go.
Just a heads-up for all my fellow One Piece fans! There won’t be a new chapter next week, but don’t worry, we’ll be getting Chapter 1166 in two weeks! Mark your calendars for November 23rd, 2025, because that’s when it officially drops. And the best part? You can read it for free over on Manga Plus!
