One Piece: Garp Is Overpowered, But These Characters Are Just As Strong

This list contains spoilers up to One Piece’s Egghead Island arc

There’s little doubt that Monkey D. Garp, a character from the popular series “One Piece,” is among its strongest figures. He demonstrated this strength by single-handedly destroying an island with one punch and being one of the few individuals to stand against the formidable Rocks Pirates. It goes without saying that Garp, the Marine Hero, is an incredible force, but it’s important to note that there are other remarkable Pirates and Marines in “One Piece” who possess equally impressive power levels.

Typically, these abilities are derived from their Devil Fruits, granting them the capacity to employ various techniques and skills swiftly to outmatch their adversaries in a matter of seconds. However, possessing a powerful Devil Fruit doesn’t guarantee immediate mastery; one must invest time and effort to fully harness its potential, unlocking an entirely new dimension of power if they decide to do so. Despite the ongoing debate about Garp’s extraordinary strength, it’s worth exploring other One Piece characters who seem excessively powerful due to their unique reasons.

Akainu

It’s Hard To Get Close To Akainu Without Being Melted By His Magma

  • Devil Fruit: Magu Magu No Mi

Observing Aakinu during the Marineford War, it’s evident why he rose to the rank of Fleet Admiral. His strength was unparalleled, and his power was amplified by his Magma Devil Fruit, known for its devastating offensive potential within the series. With this fruit, he could reduce anyone in his path to ashes effortlessly, given that he’s a Logia user, he can absorb cuts and blows from ordinary pirates without so much as flinching.

Whenever Akainu uses his Devil Fruit power, a circle of heat envelops him. This indicates an extraordinary level of durability on his part, making it risky for most individuals to approach him without facing potential harm. Although we haven’t seen the full extent of Akainu’s abilities in the narrative yet, it seems that author Oda is saving this revelation for a climactic moment when he can display just how powerful Akainu truly is.

Whitebeard

Whitebeard Could Create Entire Earthquakes With A Single Punch

  • Devil Fruit: Gura Gura No Mi

In the early stages of the story, Whitebeard’s name was often mentioned, but it wasn’t until the Marineford War that the renowned captain physically appeared. To say his debut was impactful would be an understatement. Kicking off the tumultuous conflict, Whitebeard demonstrated his Devil Fruit power by generating a terrifying earthquake with just one punch. What makes this act even more remarkable is that at this point in the story, Whitebeard was well beyond his prime and was actually quite ill during his journey to save Ace.

In spite of enduring countless swords strikes, bullet wounds, and assaults from Devil Fruits, Whitebeard not only survived but also persisted in guiding his crew into the heat of battle. Given his status as the ‘strongest man alive’, it’s no surprise that Oda portrayed him as incredibly powerful. However, it remains astonishing just how immensely powerful he truly was, particularly when he engaged in combat with Roger during his youthful years.

Kaido

It Took Luffy Multiple Attempts To Finally Take Down The Ferocious Yonko

  • Devil Fruit: Uo Uo No Mi, Model: Seiryu

Upon setting foot in Wano territory for the first time, Luffy swiftly took a fateful step that no pirate would ever wish to – charging recklessly towards the Yonko, Kaido. Even though Luffy had grown immensely powerful at this stage of the narrative, his audacious charge barely lasted a few minutes before he was severely weakened by Kaido’s Thunder Bagua. In the aftermath of their initial encounter, Luffy endured numerous humiliations before he could inflict any significant harm on Kaido’s physical form.

It was evident from his impressive entrance that Kaido, this seemingly invincible beast, had earned a reputation as unkillable. Despite being apprehended by the Marines multiple times and sentenced to death, they lacked the means to truly eliminate him due to his immense size and resilience. In truth, Kaido is so extraordinarily powerful that it appears he has grown tired of his own strength, often found drowning his sorrows in drink and causing trouble for the people of Wano. Ultimately, Luffy would need to unlock the full potential of his unique Devil Fruit abilities just to have a fighting chance against Kaido, and this certainly wasn’t an easy victory for our hero.

Shanks

Luffy’s Role Model Isn’t A Pirate To Be Messed With

  • Devil Fruit: Doesn’t Possess A Devil Fruit

Although Bartolomeo might have had more screen time in total, Oda skillfully demonstrates Shanks’ immense strength throughout the story. One notable instance is when Shanks, upon appearing at the battlefield during Marineford War, managed to halt any further escalation simply by arriving with his crew. This moment was powerful because every Marine and Pirate present understood that they had no hope of overpowering a strong, healthy Shanks, even if they desired to do so.

A more contemporary incident showcases Shanks’ dominance over Kid, who nearly destroyed his own ship with a rail gun. Foresight revealed that the weapon would inflict substantial damage, prompting Shanks to disarm both the device and its operator in one swift move. This demonstrates that, despite his friendly demeanor, it’s best to avoid provoking Shanks, as he possesses an immense, instantaneous power that could be devastating.

Blackbeard

Two Of The Most Powerful Devil Fruits Belong To A Single Man

  • Devil Fruits: Yami Yami No Mi / Gura Gura No Mi

Instead of merely obtaining a Devil Fruit that commands darkness, Blackbeard went even further by seizing the Earthquake fruit from his former mentor, Whitebeard, during the intense Marineford War. Normally, no one can possess more than one such fruit, but Blackbeard breaks this rule. This exceptional circumstance has made him a figure of immense fear worldwide, as his potential for destruction is beyond measure.

Apart from having the power to induce earthquakes similar to Whitebeard, this character also wields a fruit with extraordinary abilities. It not only unleashes destructive dark attacks, but it can temporarily neutralize opponents’ Devil Fruits in battle, making it challenging for them to use their special powers. Given these unique skills and the likelihood of him growing even stronger over time, speculation abounds that Blackbeard may very well be Luffy’s ultimate adversary in the narrative.

Monkey D. Luffy

Garp Would Be Proud Seeing Just How Far Luffy Has Come

  • Devil Fruit: Hito Hito No Mi, Model: Nika

In the world of “One Piece,” Luffy, being the central character, has naturally grown stronger over time. His growth is so remarkable that he’s often perceived as a divine entity by those around him due to his unprecedented strength. Although his Gear techniques played a significant role in boosting his power, it was when he unlocked the full potential of his Devil Fruit, particularly its Awakening, that he reached an entirely new realm of might.

As a devotee of the solar deity Nika, I harness his mighty energy to transform my surroundings into a whimsical battlefield akin to a cartoon arena! During my epic clash with Kaido, I demonstrated this extraordinary ability by casually tossing the Yonko around without breaking a bead of sweat. When I tap into my ‘Free Form’, few adversaries can match my prowess, and it’s almost mind-boggling to consider how I could possibly grow stronger given that I’m already squaring off against Admirals and Yonko with apparent ease.
