One Piece: How Loki Can Make Luffy The Pirate King, Explained

This post contains spoilers for One Piece.

The Elbaf arc in One Piece has been truly outstanding. It’s delivered both exciting action and significant story developments. With nearly 50 chapters already, every installment has been fantastic. It’s clear Eiichiro Oda is saving some of his best work for this part of the story, and he understands exactly what his fans want – a hallmark of great storytelling.

Even though the Elbaf arc is still unfolding, many One Piece fans already believe Prince Loki is the most exciting part. From the moment he appeared, it seemed Loki would play a significant role, and that feeling has only grown stronger. Given the current direction of the story, Loki could potentially be crucial to helping Luffy achieve his dream.

Loki Could Have Changed The Course Of History

The character Loki was referenced long before the story reached the Elbaf arc. During the Whole Cake Island arc, Big Mom revealed her desire to ally with the giants of Elbaf, hoping to achieve this through a marriage arrangement. However, Lola’s escape prevented the marriage from happening, hindering Big Mom’s plans for world domination. This also worsened the relationship between Big Mom and the people of Elbaf, as she had previously caused significant damage to their island.

Though people knew the name Loki, his appearance remained a mystery until the Elbaf arc. When he finally appeared, he immediately seemed like a compelling character. This impression was confirmed when Figarland Shamrock attacked him, trying to recruit him into the Holy Knights. Loki resisted, and Shamrock responded by brutally attacking the prince, leaving him for dead after inflicting serious injuries.

Even before meeting Loki, Luffy’s crew had heard stories about him being the ‘Accursed Prince’ and responsible for Harald’s death. Hajrudin was especially wary of Loki, unable to forgive him for killing their father. Despite this, the crew agreed to let Loki explain what actually happened that day.

Before explaining how Harald died, Loki told the story of his own difficult beginnings. His mother rejected him, seeing him as a monster and keeping her distance. The only maternal affection Loki ever received came from Ida, who was actually in love with Harald. Ida didn’t care what Loki looked like; she simply saw a child in need of love. Because of how his mother treated him, Loki struggled to trust others, but Ida never stopped trying to reach him.

Loki eventually fell in love with Ida, experiencing genuine affection for the first time. He demonstrated the depth of his feelings years later when, after Ida was poisoned, he destroyed the entire village in response. Besides Ida, Harald was the only other person Loki truly loved, and he was fiercely protective of his father, willing to do anything for him.

Loki Prevented Elbaf From Falling Into Imu’s Hands

I was completely surprised when Harald returned from Marijoa with something called the Depths Covenant. He didn’t realize it then, but it was a way for Imu to control people. As soon as Harald arrived at Aurest Castle, Imu immediately told him to open the Abyss, with the intention of turning the giants into soldiers. Harald was really confused by this, because he’d been given the impression that Elbaf was supposed to have a peaceful future, free from fighting.

Harald attempted to defy Imu’s order, but he was powerless to do so. He quickly summoned his sons, though only Loki was available, as Hajrudin was absent. Loki, accompanied by Jarul, went to his father’s location. Once there, Harald instructed Loki to consume the famed Devil Fruit of Elbaf and then end his life. Knowing the fruit held the key to stopping him, the King of Elbaf urged Loki to act quickly.

I was completely stuck, but I didn’t see any other way forward. So, I headed to where they were keeping the Devil Fruit. After taking care of Ragnir, I ate the fruit and went back to find my father, Harald. We shared one last look, and then… well, I had to use my new powers to end his suffering. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, killing my own father. Tears streamed down my face, but it was inevitable, and I knew it was the only thing left to do.

I witnessed a strange scene as Harald lay dying. He instructed Loki and Jarul to reveal everything that happened, but Loki wouldn’t do it. He wouldn’t betray his father’s memory, even if it meant taking the blame for something he didn’t do. It was a heavy choice, and he accepted being seen as a killer rather than tarnish his father’s name. Later, when Hajrudin learned the truth, he offered Loki a sincere apology. But despite the resolution, we all knew we were racing against the clock – Elbaf still needed saving.

Loki Will Join The Straw Hat Pirates

The Chances Of Loki Going With Luffy Are High

  • Loki joining the Straw Hats would be highly beneficial
  • He can take the crew to new heights

Having Loki as an ally significantly improves Luffy and the heroes’ odds against the Holy Knights and Imu. Loki and Gaban bring crucial experience, having fought the Holy Knights before, which will be incredibly helpful now. After the battle, Loki will face a big choice: remain on Elbaf or join the Straw Hat Pirates on their journey.

The citizens of Elbaf don’t appreciate Loki’s bold and reckless behavior, but it’s likely his reputation will eventually be restored. However, it would be disappointing if the prince simply changed his mind about things. Despite initially turning down Luffy’s offer, Loki is more likely to end up joining the Straw Hat Pirates than remaining in Elbaf.

Shut your mouth, pipsqueak!! Why would I ever be a henchman for you?—Loki

Loki is a key player in the story and incredibly powerful. Going forward, the Straw Hats will encounter enemies as strong as, or even stronger than, the Holy Knights. Right now, only Luffy and Zoro are equipped to handle such threats, making Loki a valuable addition to the crew. Each victory brings the Straw Hats closer to achieving their dreams, and ultimately, helps Luffy in his quest to find the One Piece. Loki’s immense power will be a significant asset in Luffy’s journey to become the Pirate King.

Ultimately, it’s up to the author, Oda, to decide who joins the Straw Hat crew. He’s very careful about it, which makes sense since the crew is so central to the story. Adding a weak or uninteresting character could hurt the story in the long run. However, based on what fans have seen, Loki is anything but ordinary. He has a compelling history, a great personality, and is incredibly powerful. His addition to the crew would almost certainly excite fans.
