I’ve been watching Monkey D. Luffy, the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, and he’s truly captivating. Despite being relatively young, his ambition is enormous – he wants to be the Pirate King, something only Gol D. Roger ever achieved. Actually, Luffy is even younger than Roger was when he started his journey, but that hasn’t held him back at all. He’s taken down some incredibly powerful and experienced opponents like Kaido, Doflamingo, Cracker, and Katakuri, proving age is just a number.
Luffy’s journey in One Piece is full of incredible moments where he overcomes seemingly impossible challenges. With so many memorable scenes, it’s hard to choose just one as the most iconic.
This post contains spoilers for One Piece.
Punching A Celestial Dragon
Showed His Hatred Toward Oppressors
During the Sabaody Archipelago storyline, Luffy and his crew, the Straw Hats, saw firsthand the cruel behavior of the Celestial Dragons. While at an auction, Saint Charlos was repulsed by Hachi, a Fish-Man, and reacted by immediately pulling out a gun and shooting at him – a typical response for someone of his status.
When Hachi was shot by a Celestial Dragon, who then celebrated it, Luffy became enraged. He began walking slowly towards Charlos, and everyone in the auction house realized something big was about to happen. No one anticipated Luffy actually hitting a Celestial Dragon, but he did. This punch wasn’t just a show of loyalty to his friends; it was a defiant act against the most powerful people in the world.
Putting His Hat On Nami
A Sign Of His Love For His Crewmates
I’ve always seen Nami and Luffy as being like brother and sister, really close. But it wasn’t always that way. At first, Nami actually disliked pirates – and honestly, after everything Arlong did to her family and her home, it’s easy to see why. It wasn’t long after they defeated Don Kreig that they realized Nami had disappeared. They put their heads together and quickly figured out she must have gone to Arlong’s base.
Nami was forced to get a tattoo of Arlong’s symbol on her shoulder, which constantly reminded her of the hardship she endured. When she reached her breaking point, she started stabbing at the tattoo. Luckily, Luffy intervened, stopping her and placing his treasured Straw Hat on her head. This act highlighted how much Luffy cared for his crew, as he was willing to give up something he valued so deeply. It also demonstrated that he would do anything to protect them from pain and sadness.
Breaking The Mirror In Whole Cake Island Arc
Showed Luffy’s Confidence In His Abilities
Whole Cake Island presented a major challenge for Luffy and his crew. They were attempting to enter the territory of one of the most powerful pirates, a Yonko, and had to split up to do so. While some of the crew stayed behind in Zou, others went to Whole Cake Island to find and rescue Sanji. Luffy believed Sanji wouldn’t have abandoned the crew without a good reason, so he set out to locate him.
Throughout his journey, Luffy encountered many obstacles, but his battle against Charlotte Katakuri, the most powerful of Big Mom’s commanders, was his toughest yet. The fight happened within a bizarre, mirrored dimension. When they entered, Luffy intentionally destroyed the only exit – a mirror – to prevent Katakuri from pursuing the rest of his crew.
Using Conqueror’s Haki To Knock Out People In Marineford
A Symbol Of Luffy’s Unwavering Resolve
The Marineford arc featured intense, action-packed fights. It all began when the Marines decided to execute Portgas D. Ace, a key member of Whitebeard’s crew. After learning about this, Luffy immediately headed for Impel Down and then Marineford to try and save him.
During his time on the island, Luffy fought bravely against his enemies, but many were simply stronger than him, and he was outnumbered. The situation grew increasingly dire, and it seemed like Ace was in real danger. Refusing to accept this, Luffy unleashed a powerful burst of energy – Conqueror’s Haki – by yelling for the executioners to stop. This knocked them unconscious. Remarkably, Luffy didn’t even know he could use this ability; it happened instinctively.
Defeating Bellamy With A Single Punch
Proved How Much Luffy Cares About Dreams
Bellamy was a cruel bully who enjoyed picking on those less powerful than himself. He specifically targeted Masira, Shoujou, and Mont Blanc Cricket – all individuals with ambitious dreams – stealing their money and ridiculing their aspirations, something Luffy couldn’t tolerate.
Luffy wasn’t playing around when he returned to Mock Town to fight Bellamy. Although Bellamy managed to land some blows, Luffy barely felt them. Luffy quickly won the fight with just one punch, but he became even angrier when Bellamy started mocking other people’s aspirations.
Refusing To Submit To Rob Lucci
An Indication Of Luffy’s Incredible Resilience
Rob Lucci first appeared during the Water 7 storyline, immediately becoming a threat to the Straw Hat Pirates by kidnapping Nico Robin. Luffy attempted to intervene, but Lucci, as a member of CP9, proved to be much stronger.
After losing to Lucci, Luffy understood he needed to improve his abilities. He developed two new fighting styles, known as Gears, to give him a better chance. When they fought again at Enies Lobby, Luffy was much more of a match for Lucci. Although Lucci eventually started to overpower Luffy, landing several hits, Luffy refused to give up. He kept fighting until he could finally defeat Lucci and win the battle.
Luffy Uses Gear 5th For The First Time
Overcame A Yonko Using His Grit
Luffy’s battle with Kaido was incredible. Facing the world’s strongest being, Luffy clearly needed to become much more powerful.
When Kaido hit Luffy while he wasn’t paying attention, it seemed like Luffy would be defeated. However, the attack unexpectedly triggered Luffy’s Devil Fruit to awaken, giving him access to a powerful new form called Gear 5th. With this newfound ability, Luffy turned the tables and ultimately won the fight against Kaido.
