This article contains spoilers for the One Piece series.
In the popular “One Piece” series, Luffy is the central character who frequently finds himself in the thick of significant battles. As a result, Luffy has had to evolve and adapt rapidly during these confrontations. Known for his well-recognized transformations like the major Gears, Luffy also possesses some less-remembered ones that may have slipped fans’ minds.
Nightmare Luffy
A Form Attained Thanks To Moria’s Powers

In the Thriller Bark arc of “One Piece,” the character known as Nightmare Luffy played a significant role, but often gets overlooked when discussing Luffy’s various transformations. This is likely due to the fact that Nightmare Luffy is mostly a temporary form that Luffy cannot assume independently.
As a die-hard fan, I’ve always wondered: To transform into “Nightmare Luffy,” he needs a good helping of Moria’s shadows. Once he does, boy, does he pack a punch! It sure would be thrilling to see this form make a reappearance if ever Moria finds his way back into the limelight of the storyline.
Mini Gear 4
A Partial Gear 4 Transformation

As an ardent fan, I’m excited to share that Luffy’s latest, somewhat under-the-radar transformation is the Mini Gear 4! This amazing feat was first showcased in One Piece manga chapter 1127. Unlike a full Gear 4, this transformation allows Luffy a unique advantage – he can selectively transform parts of his body as per his will. It’s not the traditional Gear 4, but it sure is a game-changer!
As I find myself catapulted into a new level of power, it’s almost like revving up my engine to Gear 3! This newfound mastery over my transformations, particularly since my awakening in Wano, just goes to demonstrate the immense control Luffy has attained. It’s an exhilarating feeling, indeed!
Water Luffy
An Improvised Form Luffy Used to Attack Sir Crocodile

In the popular series “One Piece,” Luffy’s first-ever transformation occurred during the Arabasta arc, often being overlooked due to its unusual nature. When facing off against Crocodile, Luffy discovered he could harm him with water. To effectively combat him, Luffy consumed a large amount of water and used it as a weapon. However, this transformation unfortunately did not result in defeating Sir Crocodile.
Gear 2 + 3 Luffy
First Used Against Gekko Moria

Over a significant period, Luffy’s primary combat tools have been the Gears 2 and 3, which he first activated during the incidents at Enies Lobby and continued to utilize thereafter.
In Thriller Bark, viewers witnessed an extraordinary transformation where Luffy simultaneously employed two powers. He utilized this dual ability to deal harm to Gekko Moria, proving effective, yet placing immense stress on his physical condition.
Tankman (Normal Version)
A Never-Seen Version of Gear 4
After the timeskip, Luffy’s greatest power-up occurred until the Wano arc, during which he unveiled Gear 5. So far, fans have witnessed several variations of Gear 4, including Boundman, Snakeman, and Tankman: Full Version.
In simpler terms, the term “Boundman” was initially employed against both Doflamingo and Snakeman (Katakuri), while it was a special version of Tankman that Luffy used against Cracker. Luffy named this unique variation as the “Manpuku Version,” due to his excessive fullness at the time. It remains uncertain whether Oda will unveil the standard version to the audience in the future.
Luffy Candle Champion
A Form He Created Thanks To Mr. 3

In the series “One Piece,” a lesser-known change that Luffy undergoes is his Candle Champion form. This transformation occurred just once, during the Impel Down arc. Interestingly, Luffy can’t achieve this form independently; it requires the Doru Doru no Mi, a special Devil Fruit, to manifest.
With this change, Luffy acquires wax-like boxing gloves and boots. These not only boost his offensive abilities, but also provide defensive benefits when battling foes such as Magellan, who employs poison in combat.
One Piece Chapter 1159 will be released this week, and as always, it will come out on Sunday. In Japan, the release time is 12AM JST on Monday. For most international readers, they can expect to access the chapter on August 31st. The official release date worldwide is set for September 7th, 2025. If you’re a fan, you can read it for free on Manga Plus.
