Eiichiro Oda has revealed the main villain of One Piece: Saint Nerona Imu, the King of the World and leader of the World Government, has arrived in the lower world. This dramatic turn of events massively increases the tension for the Final Saga and suggests that the Straw Hat Pirates, and especially their captain Monkey D. Luffy, are facing an unavoidable defeat. As the ultimate enemy, and considering Luffy’s unique power – the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika – and their destined rivalry, Luffy’s loss, even as a powerful Yonko, will be incredibly impactful.
Assessing The Narrative Importance Of Imu’s Arrival In The Warland
As a huge One Piece fan, I was completely blown away by Chapter 1179! It looks like Saint Imu is finally making his move, personally heading to Elbaph to deal with Nidhoggr and Luffy’s Nika form. It’s becoming clearer that when the Final Saga kicked off, Imu’s big play was grabbing both the Motherflame from Vegapunk and the army of Elbaph. Seriously, these two things seem absolutely crucial for him and the World Government if they want any chance of winning the massive war that’s brewing – we’re really seeing the prelude to something huge!
Nerona Imu had already obtained the Mother Flame with York’s help, but taking control of the Elbaph army proved difficult because of Nika and Nidhoggr. Imu attempted to defeat them by possessing Gunko, but their power was too great. Believing the Five Elders and the Admirals couldn’t handle the situation, Imu decided to personally intervene in Warland in chapter 1179, intending to demonstrate the terrifying power of a God.
Why The Straw Hat Crew Must Lose On Elbaph To Maintain High Stakes
Eiichiro Oda has confirmed that Imu is the ultimate villain of the series. While Blackbeard is a major threat, Imu won’t be defeated in Elbaf yet. The major war involving the Revolutionary Army, Straw Hats, and Blackbeard Pirates hasn’t started, so Imu’s defeat in the land of the giants is impossible. This means Imu will accomplish whatever brought him there.
All is preordained. It all began long before this! — Saint Nerona Imu, One Piece Chapter 1179
If Imu were to lose, it would damage his established image, similar to what happened with the Knights of God and the Five Elders. To solidify Imu’s importance to the story and make him a more compelling character, Eiichiro Oda needs him to win. This likely means both the Nidhoggr and Luffy, in his Sun God Nika form, will be defeated.
How The Defeat In The Land Of Giants Would Mirror Pre-Timeskip
One Piece frequently uses mirroring between the parts of the story before and after the timeskip. For example, the Dressrosa and Arabasta arcs share a lot of similarities, as do Thriller Bark and Wano Country. Even Enies Lobby and Whole Cake Island have comparable elements.
Oda has stated that a massive war will conclude the final part of the story, and it will be even bigger than the battle at Marineford. This upcoming war seems to be following a similar pattern to the Summit War, and Elbaph could play the same role as Sabaody Archipelago did previously. Just as Luffy suffered a major defeat at Sabaody, which then led into the Summit War, Oda has confirmed Elbaph will lead directly into this final Great War. This suggests the Straw Hats might face another defeat on Elbaph, triggering a war of unprecedented scale and chaos.

Breaking Down The Events To Come After Nerona Imu’s Descent
Now that Nerona Imu has fallen in Elbaph, it’s becoming clear that Oda will reveal the full power of his Devil Fruit in upcoming chapters. This means Luffy and Loki will likely face the intense power of the World Government’s creator, and they may not win the fight. While Elbaph itself will probably be safe, something significant will be lost – possibly Luffy or Loki being captured, or even the deaths of important characters like Dorry, Brogy, Yarul, and others.
If Eiichiro Oda intends for Imu to be the ultimate villain, he needs to establish Imu as far more terrifying than any opponent we’ve seen in One Piece so far. After Imu’s success at Elbaph, the story will likely move directly into a massive war involving the Revolutionary Army, the other Emperors, and the entire World Government – including the Marines – all fighting at full strength.
One Piece chapter 1180 will be available to read on Manga Plus on April 19, 2026, at 11 a.m. EST.
