This article contains spoilers from One Piece’s Wano Arc.

Key Takeaways

  • Yamato’s Devil Fruit is the Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Okuchi no Makami.
  • Yamato is not an Awakening user, confirmed by Oda.
  • Cloud rings don’t indicate Devil Fruit Awakening status.

The 110th installment of “One Piece” SBS (Shonen Jump’s official fan club) has been released, sparking excitement among fans as they eagerly await the secrets and intriguing insights Oda may have shared in this section. Although Oda often uses the SBS corner for humor, occasionally he discloses tidbits that could potentially change the entire narrative of “One Piece.

This month’s SBS (Super Best Friend) post from Oda has been quite engaging, offering up a good deal of enticing insights regarding the Admirals of the Marines, along with a tantalizing tidbit about Yamato too. For those in the know, Yamato is a potent character hailing from Wano and rumored to be Kaido’s offspring. Furthermore, Yamato is an incredibly powerful Devil Fruit user, as we learned during the Wano Country arc. Over the years, fans have wondered about Yamato’s Devil Fruit Awakening status, and now, thanks to Oda, we finally have some answers!

Yamato’s Devil Fruit Power And Its Awakening

  • Yamato Wields The Power Of The Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Okuchi no Makami
  • Yamato Is Not An Awakening User

Yamato was introduced to the fans in the Third Act of the Wano Country Arc. When the raid on Onigashima officially began, Yamato showed up as a very powerful fighter. There, Yamato joined the raid against Kaido, and even ended up fighting against the Yonko. Yamato also revealed the Devil Fruit ability of an ancient deity, and it turned out to be a Mythical Zoan as well. Yamato’s ability was revealed to be the Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Okuchi no Makami, and it was clearly stated that this was an incredibly powerful devil fruit that allows the user to turn into a guardian deity fox at will, as well as a human-guardian deity hybrid.

One key detail that stuck out during this transformation to the fans was the cloud ring around Yamato’s neck. Usually, cloud rings are commonly associated with Awakening among the fans. However, Oda has never explicitly stated that cloud rings mean Awakening. Fans automatically assumed that these rings must mean Awakening since Luffy has a cloud ring around his neck. In his awakened form, as do characters such as Rob Lucci, Kaku, and, of course, the Five Elders as well. Naturally, Yamato having a cloud ring meant to many fans that the devil fruit Yamato possessed was awakened as well.

Some viewers disagreed with the notion since Yamato hadn’t demonstrated any signs of Awakening. Awakening refers to a special transformation that a Zoan Devil Fruit user receives. This was explicitly stated by Oda. Moreover, there were no indications from Yamato’s transformation that suggested the devil fruit had been awakened. However, it was a reasonable theory until recently.

Why Yamato Is Not An Awakening User

In volume 110 of the One Piece series, it was officially confirmed that Yamato is a user of a Devil Fruit without an awakened state. This implies that Oda, the manga artist, has illustrated Yamato’s transformation into a fox-like deity as a child, suggesting that Yamato could have transformed into this form even at such a young age and also accessed the hybrid form. At this point in the story, Yamato was approximately 8 years old. Interestingly, during these transformations, Yamato continued to wear the cloud ring around his neck. This detail is significant and fans should take note of it. In essence, this suggests that Yamato did not awaken his Devil Fruit abilities during the Wano Country arc, and the cloud ring does not signify an awakened state for Yamato or any other character in One Piece.

It’s impossible for an 8-year-old child to activate a Devil Fruit right after consuming it, as awakening involves intense training over many years. Moreover, users of the Paramecia type don’t exhibit cloud rings, while Zoan types often do – but not always, like Yamato’s case demonstrates. This discovery opens up fascinating debates about what exactly signifies a Zoan’s awakening.

The concept that when a Zoan Devil Fruit is activated, it automatically gives the user a cloud ring isn’t as strong an assumption anymore. For instance, Luffy had a cloud ring around his neck during Gear 4, but some might argue that he was already on the path to Awakening at that point. However, Yamato possessing a Devil Fruit with a ring around its neck suggests that it doesn’t automatically signify an awakened state. In fact, it seems that the user may have had this cloud ring since childhood, implying that it doesn’t necessarily mean they are close to Awakening either.

More Devil Fruit Users Can Be Speculated To Be Awakened

After it’s been established that Yamato doesn’t possess the ability of Devil Fruit Awakening, fans can now explore the storyline with a more expansive outlook. In other words, characters like Kaido, who haven’t demonstrated a cloud ring, have re-entered discussions about having a Devil Fruit Awakening. To begin with, Kaido has always been an enigma for fans. Despite being the strongest character in the world and possessing a powerful Zoan type Devil Fruit, there was no confirmation from Oda that Kaido had an Awakening transformation. However, it’s important to note that even though Kaido wasn’t explicitly said to have a Devil Fruit Awakening, he showed knowledge about them and reacted as if he had one when Luffy underwent his own Awakening.

Without explicitly saying so, Oda hinted at Kaido possibly awakening his Devil Fruit, as his extraordinary transformation definitely caught people’s attention. During battles, Kaido underwent two transformations that sparked curiosity; one transformation made him swell massively and turn a different color. This transformation enabled Kaido to unleash all his power and also boost the effectiveness of his Haki at the same time. Although this purple form lacks an official name, it significantly amplifies Kaido’s strength. On several occasions, Kaido even managed to overpower Gear 5 Luffy, a strong indication that he might have awakened his Devil Fruit.

Beyond his previous transformations, Kaido underwent another stunning metamorphosis, engulfing himself in fiery flames and assuming the formidable shape of a regal lava-like dragon. This was undoubtedly Kaido at his zenith, marking an impressive transformation. With this new display, discussions about Kaido’s Devil Fruit Awakening can be revisited once more. Likewise, there are other characters in One Piece whose cases for Devil Fruit Awakening have now become stronger, leading to numerous intriguing debates among fans. At the very least, the theory that cloud rings signify an awakened user has been disproven, as it is no longer a universal indicator of such a status.

It would be great if Oda explains clearly what truly signifies a Zoan Awakening. As of now, readers can merely speculate that a character is Awakened when Oda explicitly introduces them with a box stating they are Awakened, as seen with characters like Lucci, Kaku, and Luffy. Regarding the Elders, we can guess they might be Awakened, but their powers being demonic in nature are complex and mysterious, so it’s not entirely clear. Here’s hoping Oda sheds light on these mysteries in the manga soon.
