One Piece: Oda Could Reveal Nami's Past In The Final Saga

As a longtime fan of One Piece, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation every time we get a glimpse into Nami’s past. It’s been quite some time since Oda hinted at having already written a story about her birth, and it’s safe to say that fans have grown quite curious about it.

This article contains spoilers from One Piece’s Final Saga.

In the world of “One Piece,” Nami is a valued member of the Straw Hat Pirates and plays a crucial role among all characters. As Luffy’s chief navigator, she holds significant weight in the storyline, and it’s expected that she will guide Luffy to retrieve the fabled treasure known as the “One Piece.” This places great significance on Nami, but fans recognize her for being much more than just a key player.

In a simpler and more conversational manner: Nami isn’t just about Luffy; she has her own aspirations. Before she even crossed paths with Luffy, her dreams were grand, and she continues to pursue them now. Specifically, she wants to become the world’s greatest map-maker! It seems like a tall order, but she’s persistently working towards it. As a child, this dream took root in her heart, and children usually share such aspirations with their parents. Interestingly, the details of Nami’s birth are still shrouded in mystery. However, since Oda has been hinting at Nami’s backstory, there’s a chance we might learn more about it in the Final Saga.

Nami’s Current Past In One Piece Is Already A Touching Story

  • Nami Was Found By Nojiko
  • Bellamere Raised Nami and Njiko

In the world of One Piece, there are many details about Nami’s backstory that remain a mystery for fans. The only glimpse we get into her past is from the Arlong Park Arc, where Oda chose to reveal parts of it. Despite not being shown her actual birth, this part of Nami’s history proved quite emotional. When she was found as a newborn, she was cradled by Nojiko and later taken in by Bellemere following a war that left Bellemere barely alive. In the aftermath of the war, Bellemere renounced her role as a marine and chose to cultivate tangerines instead. They lived together in Kokoyashi Village, with Bellemere acting as a mother figure to both Nami and Nojiko. To these children, she was like their biological parent, caring for them diligently. However, the idyllic life they shared was shattered when the Arlong Pirates, unleashed due to the breakup of the Sun Pirates in the Grand Line, wreaked havoc on East Blue.

One more round, that’s all it takes for things to go back to how they were. All I’ll have again is the freedom I once knew, liberated from Arlong’s grasp. Bellemere-san, I can finally let loose and laugh without a care in the world. – Nami

In the East Blue region, Arlong wrought havoc, razing one settlement after another until he targeted Kokoyashi Village. There, Arlong extorted tribute from the villagers in exchange for their lives, with those who couldn’t pay or produce the necessary funds essentially facing death. Faced with this choice, Bellemere could only spare enough resources to secure her own life or that of her two children. Since acknowledging that her children were not truly hers was unthinkable, Bellemere chose self-sacrifice and willingly gave up her life, paying for the lives of Nami and Nojiko instead. From then on, these two girls have continued Bellemere’s legacy by striving to make her proud in all they do.

Nami worked tremendously hard to gain the freedom of every single individual living in Kokoyashi Village, and she would have succeeded had Arlong not been treacherous right from the beginning. The failure essentially crushed her, and that is where the Straw Hat Pirates came in, defeating Arlong and all his henchmen in the process and liberating the village. Nami has, since then, sailed with the Straw Hat Pirates, and she carries Bellemere in her heart on her adventures. Nami still wants to be a world-famous cartographer, and her main goal is to draw a map of the entire world.

How Oda Almost Revealed Nami’s Past In Strong World

Nami Was A Key Figure In The Non-Canon One Piece Strong World

One Piece: Oda Could Reveal Nami's Past In The Final Saga

Among the characters created by Oda, Nami is one of the few whose complete origins remain undisclosed. While viewers have glimpsed her past with Bellemere during a flashback, this isn’t her full backstory. It’s important to note that Nami wasn’t born to Bellemere. What intrigues fans is how Nojiko managed to locate her in the first place. Given these facts, it’s evident that Nami hails from the East Blue region.

Oda has disclosed that Nami hails from the realm of Oykot Kingdom, a place shrouded in mystery for most fans. As they impatiently await more information about Nami’s origins, they find themselves left guessing what Oda might uncover next regarding her birth. However, with the creator taking his time to share these details, some speculate that Nami’s backstory may never see the light of day. To some fans, Nami’s past could be inconsequential, but the prolonged wait for its revelation fuels this theory that it might remain hidden.

What good is the treasure if I’m alone? – Nami

However, that notion might just be incorrect because Oda has already crafted a story for Nami’s past. In fact, Oda mentioned in 2016 that he had already written one story about her birth, and he had not introduced it into the main storyline of One Piece just yet. Here’s what Oda had to say about Nami’s birth:

I had conceived the initial plot of Strong World to dig into the secret of Nami’s birth. The staff was shocked to read the content. The story became a little too touching, so I revised it to be more exciting for the young audience.

For fans, it’s evident that Oda has crafted a heartfelt tale for Nami, a story that moved the staff so deeply they felt it was too emotional for Strong World. This suggests the power of Oda’s writing. Originally, he chose not to include this narrative in Strong World, but fortunately, this could mean that it might be woven into the main One Piece storyline if it ever becomes relevant. Since this idea was mentioned in 2016, following Film Gold’s release, it’s clear that Oda hasn’t abandoned it entirely. This implies there’s a possibility that Nami’s story could still be part of One Piece at some future point.

What Oda Shouldn’t Reveal Nami’s Past To Be

Nami’s Skills And Hobbies Must Be Her Own

Readers are eager to learn about Nami’s family background and her origins. Yet, there are certain aspects that could potentially undermine Nami’s character development. Fans are anxiously hoping that Oda steers clear of making Nami’s parents renowned cartographers and intellectual titans. Instead, it’s delightful that Nami develops a passion for cartography independently and demonstrates prodigious talent on her own merit. Giving Nami her skills from her parents could diminish her unique character, and regardless of the plot twists planned by Oda, fans hope that this is one path they won’t follow in Nami’s narrative.
