Fans of One Piece have been anxiously awaiting details about Luffy’s Mother from Oda, but each year, they end up with more uncertainties. This year, however, is a significant change, as things are different.

Even though Eiichiro Oda hasn’t directly explained Monkey D. Luffy’s origins, he appears to have hinted at who Luffy’s mother might be, and this character is now important in the story being told through the Loki flashback. After years of speculation, Oda has given fans a potential answer regarding Luffy’s mother.

Plus, we’ve learned the identities of the mothers of other Straw Hats, like Sanji and Zoro, so it makes sense he’d be considering Luffy’s mom as well.

It’s obvious that Oda has been planning for Luffy’s mother’s introduction, but it seems he hadn’t fully decided on the details until recently – he was still figuring out how and where she would appear in the story. More than ten years ago, Oda was questioned about Luffy’s mother, and here’s what he shared at the time:

Here are the answers to your questions about Luffy’s mother: What was she like? She was described as a very beautiful woman. What happened to her? Unfortunately, she passed away when Luffy was still very young. Did she die when Luffy was a baby? While not explicitly stated that it was when he was a baby, it was indeed during his early childhood.

Oda: I think she’s alive. I’m still thinking hard about this.

It’s obvious Oda didn’t give it much consideration initially, as he was busy developing the story. Eventually, he’ll need to concentrate on Dragon and the Revolutionary Army, and when he does, Oda will almost certainly have to reveal Luffy’s mother.

Toritoma Could Be Luffy’s Mom

Although Oda hasn’t directly revealed Luffy’s mother to the audience, a lot of readers think the solution is already known. Recent chapters of One Piece introduced Toritoma, the Empress of Amazon Lily prior to Boa Hancock, and her striking similarity to Luffy has caught many eyes. For clarification, fans encountered Toritoma in the Loki flashback. Approximately 44 years ago, she was associated with the Kuja Pirates, but only as a young child. She was depicted carrying messages from Gloriosa and Shakky.

When young, Toritoma bears a striking resemblance to Luffy, and many viewers have pointed this out in various scenes. Furthermore, her age aligns with Dragon’s during the flashback. Toritoma appears as a child, seemingly no older than 14 or 15. Considering Dragon was about 11 years old 44 years ago, the timing fits. Above all, every Kuja Empress has historically been a significant character in the narrative, and currently, Toritoma is the only one who hasn’t had a major role.

Toritoma Is Already Dead

Sadly, Toritoma has passed away, as Oda explained, due to Love Sickness. However, this might be linked to the fact that Dragon needed to depart due to his involvement with the Revolutionary Army, or potentially even because Luffy was secretly kept safe in the Goa Kingdom, shielded from her.
