This article contains spoilers from One Piece’s Elbaf Arc.
Fans of *One Piece* are aware that the author, Eiichiro Oda, has been intentionally keeping the full extent of Red-Haired Shanks’ powers hidden. Now that the story has entered its final arc, Oda is gradually revealing more about this character. Though Shanks’ abilities haven’t been fully shown in *One Piece* yet, many believe he’s incredibly powerful and currently the strongest of the Yonko.
It appears most of Shanks’ power comes from his impressive Haki, which is what the author, Oda, wants us to think. But there’s a possibility he has another ability, potentially a Devil Fruit power. While many fans dismiss the idea of Shanks having a Devil Fruit, there’s growing evidence to suggest it could be true.
Shanks Could Have A Devil Fruit Power

- Shamrock’s Sword Is Enchanted
As a huge One Piece fan, I’ve always been fascinated by Devil Fruits – they’re clearly a massive power-up in that world! You see most of the strongest characters wielding them. But what’s really interesting is realizing that a Devil Fruit alone isn’t enough to guarantee victory. Haki is just as crucial, and honestly, sometimes it feels even *more* important. It’s like, a Devil Fruit can get you pretty far, but Haki is what truly unlocks someone’s potential!
Don’t cry Luffy. It’s just an arm. I’m glad you’re okay. — Shanks
Shanks is an incredibly skilled master of Haki, and even what he’s demonstrated so far is remarkable. However, his past ties to the World Government and the Holy Knights suggest there may be even more to his abilities and background than we currently know.
While sailing with Roger, Shanks was known for his strong Haki abilities. He even adopted the fighting styles of both Roger and Rocks, a skill no one else possesses today. However, things shifted when Shanks returned to Marijoa. Flashbacks in the Elbaf arc revealed he bore the mark of the Holy Knights, indicating he lived there for a period and likely trained with Shamrock. It seems Shamrock doesn’t have a Devil Fruit power himself, but his weapon does-possibly by having eaten one or being enchanted by Imu. The same could be true for Shanks; he may not have a Devil Fruit, but relies on other powerful abilities gained during his time in Marijoa.
He did visit the Holy Land once, but now he seems much more interested in life here on Earth. – Shamrock Figarland
Shanks’s Sword Could Have The Power Of Gryphon
Shamrock Has The Power Of Cerberus
Shanks didn’t possess the Gryphon sword while he was with Roger; he acquired it later, likely in Marijoa. It appears there are two distinct blades: the Gryphon and the Cerberus. As fans know, Shamrock Figarland wields the Cerberus, a unique sword capable of summoning a fully awakened Cerberus. This summoned creature is incredibly powerful, able to inflict serious damage even on strong opponents like Loki.
Like some other powerful swordsmen, Shanks possesses a unique sword called the Gryphon, and it’s likely this blade can transform into a real Gryphon to fight alongside him. While Shanks himself wouldn’t eat a Devil Fruit, there’s nothing stopping him from wielding a sword that *has* Devil Fruit powers.
The next chapter of One Piece, chapter 1161, will be released in two weeks on Sunday. In Japan, it will become available at 12 AM JST on Monday, September 28, 2025. Fans can read it for free on Manga Plus.
