This post contains spoilers for One Piece.
For many years, followers of “One Piece” have often perceived Monkey D. Dragon as an uninvolved father towards Luffy due to his apparent disregard for him. However, this perspective is not entirely accurate. Although it may seem like Dragon deliberately avoids Luffy, there’s a compelling reason behind his distance. In truth, the leader of the Revolutionary Army had valid grounds for keeping some distance from Luffy.
Dragon Knows How Truth About The World Government
Dragon Knows The Reality Of The World Government

- Dragon was present in the God Valley Incident
- Dragon wanted to protect Luffy
In Chapter 1159 of One Piece, it emerged that Dragon was present during the Rocks Pirates’ attack on God Valley. At that time, Dragon held a lower rank in the Marines and was compelled to follow orders. During his exploration of God Valley, Dragon encountered Shanks and Shamrock’s mother, who was gravely ill. Desperate, she pleaded with Dragon to rescue her children from the Celestial Dragons’ grasp. It’s possible that Dragon successfully saved Shanks and hid him within a treasure chest, which later fell into the possession of the Roger Pirates.
In a world where the unneeded are ruthlessly eradicated, there is no room for joy… But one day, I promise you, I’ll bring about a change in this world, as I foretell it. -Dragon (paraphrased)
After witnessing the atrocities the World Government perpetrated against blameless individuals, Dragon came to realize that this group disregards moral principles altogether. Thus, when Dragon opted to establish the Freedom Fighters, he entrusted Luffy to Garp’s protection. This action aimed to safeguard Luffy from harm, as his grandfather would ensure his safety. It was undoubtedly difficult for Dragon to remain apart from his son, but he recognized that it was the best course of action. Had Dragon continued to keep Luffy by his side, there would have been a high probability that the World Government would frequently target the young boy.

Instead of implying that Dragon merely held Luffy at bay due to fear for his son’s safety, it is essential to note that as the Supreme Commander of the Revolutionary Army, Dragon’s primary objective revolves around freeing people from the clutches of oppressive authorities. This mission may have played a role in his interactions with Luffy.
Dragon And Luffy Will Liberate The World
Luffy And His Father Will Play A Pivotal Role In One Piece

Dragon and Luffy pose significant challenges to Imu’s rule, with Dragon seemingly aware of Imu’s existence and aiming to overthrow him along with the World Government. After eliminating the higher-ups, Dragon intends for the people to select their new leaders. Sabo too is privy to Imu’s true nature, having witnessed Nefertari Cobra’s murder by Imu. While an open conflict between Dragon and Sabo hasn’t occurred yet, it could potentially escalate in the future.
Luffy is unaware of Imu, yet ironically, Imu sees him as a formidable adversary due to his possession of the Nika-Model Hito Hito no Mi, a Devil Fruit once belonging to Joyboy. For centuries, Imu and the World Government have tried to conceal the existence of this powerful Devil Fruit, fearing it might fall into the wrong hands. Despite their best efforts, the Devil Fruit has consistently evaded them. Given that Luffy is known as the Liberator, it’s clear he will challenge Imu’s oppressive rule. In fact, Luffy has already overthrown several tyrants, such as Doflamingo, Enel, and Kaido, and he is poised to alter the course of history.
Though he may not manage on his own, Luffy and Dragon find themselves in similar circumstances. It’s plausible that they could join forces at some stage. Meanwhile, Imu is also preoccupied with the looming menace of Blackbeard.

More recently, it’s come to light that Blackbeard is the offspring of the renowned Rocks D. Xebec. As fans are now aware, Rocks D. Xebec was the commander of the Rocks Pirates and posed a significant danger to Imu. It’s also been established that Xebec hailed from the Davy clan, which was on the brink of extinction. Given his knowledge of his parents’ hardships, Blackbeard is likely driven by a desire for revenge. There’s even speculation that he may have already set his plan in motion.
In the Egghead arc, Catarina Devon gained the ability to transform into Saturn at will. It’s plausible that Blackbeard could have leveraged her powers to infiltrate Marijoa and wreak havoc. At this point, these are just theories, but we can expect Oda to disclose the facts in the upcoming arcs.
