This post contains spoilers for One Piece.
Edward Newgate, more famously known as Whitebeard, was one of the four most powerful pirates – the Yonko – in One Piece. He appeared in the story before the timeskip, and played a major role in the events at Marineford.
Whitebeard traveled to the Marine Headquarters with the goal of saving Portgas D. Ace. He was a very protective leader, and his crewmates knew it – so much so that no pirate in the world of One Piece would ever risk hurting them. Whitebeard fought bravely against the Marines, but sadly, he was defeated. Despite losing, he became a legend because he stood his ground and never retreated.
Whitebeard Ran Away From Garp In Chapter 1161
Fans Think That Whitebeard’s Legacy Has Been Negatively Affected
- Garp attacked the Rocks Pirates
- Whitebeard chose to run away
One Piece Chapter 1161 was truly impressive, though it also sparked a lot of debate among fans. The chapter featured Monkey D. Garp in battle. For a long time, fans have been eager to see just how powerful Garp was in his prime, and it looks like weāre finally getting that answer. In the chapter, Linlin attacked Garp with her crew, but the vice admiral didnāt even seem fazed.
You call that fire, Linlin? āGarp
After that, Garp fought back against the pirates. He displayed his great strength, but Whitebeard, Linlin, and Kaido retreated. It might appear they were frightened of Garp, but that wasn’t the reason. Kaido was actually frustrated because he wanted a chance to battle Garp, meaning he wasn’t scared at all. The trio’s retreat was actually to support their captain, Xebec. They all knew Garp was incredibly powerful and would be hard to defeat quickly. If they stayed and fought, Xebec would have been at a disadvantage. Therefore, they chose to leave and reinforce their captain.
After what happened, many fans started wondering if Whitebeard was as powerful as Roger and Garp. Some people also used this event to minimize Whitebeardās reputation for never avoiding a fight. However, these arguments donāt hold up. As weāve already discussed, Whitebeard didnāt retreat from Garp out of fear. He was focused on pursuing Xebec.
If Whitebeard had chosen, he could have remained and battled Garp without much difficulty. Furthermore, Whitebeard remained Roger’s most formidable opponent. They clashed in numerous battles, yet neither could definitively defeat the other. This is highlighted by the minimal difference in their bounty amounts; even as the Pirate King, Roger’s bounty was only marginally greater. Taken together, these facts strongly suggest that Whitebeard was on equal footing with Roger.
Whitebeard Was The Strongest Man In One Piece
Whitebeard’s Power Was Unmatched
Given that itās now established Oda didnāt diminish Whitebeardās reputation, it’s important to recall that this pirate was exceptionally powerful, standing above most others. While Whitebeard was a Yonko, his strength surpassed that of his fellow emperors. To begin with, Whitebeard possessed the Gura Gura no Mi, a Devil Fruit legendary for its world-shattering potential. This allowed him to generate devastating tremors capable of completely destroying islands. Even with such a formidable Devil Fruit, Whitebeard didnāt depend on it solely. He diligently learned and perfected all three forms of Haki.
Viewers have frequently observed that Whitebeardās Haki was comparable to Rogerās, and possibly even stronger. Importantly, Whitebeardās large size gave him a significant physical advantage over many of his rivals. Although Whitebeard didnāt often display his full power, both his enemies and allies were well aware of his capabilities.
Gol D. Roger had the greatest respect for Whitebeard, and the two often enjoyed drinks together. Roger even confided in him, sharing secrets about the One Piece. After Rogerās death, Shiki suggested to Whitebeard that he was powerful enough to take control of the world. Furthermore, Garp famously referred to Whitebeard as “The King of the Seas,” recognizing his immense strength and potential. Therefore, Eiichiro Oda has provided ample evidence demonstrating just how formidable Whitebeard truly was. Itās clear he was a force to be reckoned with, and his power was widely acknowledged.
