This article contains spoilers from One Piece’s Elbaf arc.
In the world of *One Piece*, the Marines are one of the three major forces keeping order on the seas. They’re incredibly strong, with power that can compete with the most powerful pirates, known as the Yonko. However, only a handful of Marines are actually as strong as the Yonko. In the past, Garp was the only Marine capable of matching the strength of a Yonko or other top-level fighters of his time.
Similar to past generations, the current era of *One Piece* also has one exceptionally powerful Marine: Fleet Admiral Akainu, whose real name is Sakazuki. He’s easily one of the strongest characters in the series, possessing a remarkably powerful Devil Fruit. In terms of sheer strength, he’s comparable to the Yonko, though he isn’t quite on par with Garp, he’s still an incredibly formidable opponent.
Fleet Admiral Akainu Is Yonko Level
Admirals Are Weaker Than The Yonko Generally

- Akainu is worth 5 billion berries
- Akainu has one of the most overpowered Devil Fruits
Fleet Admiral Akainu is undeniably one of the strongest characters in One Piece. Some fans may underestimate him because he works for the Navy, but he’s consistently demonstrated incredible power. He’s dedicated many years to the Navy, steadily climbing the ranks from Vice Admiral to his current position as an Admiral, a role prominently featured during the Paramount War.
The era of Whitebeard is over! He was just a loser of the old era! — Akainu
Following the two-year gap in the story of *One Piece*, Akainu was promoted to Fleet Admiral, and he’s become significantly more powerful. He possesses an incredibly strong Devil Fruit, a Logia-type that lets him create and control lava, causing massive damage. It appears his Devil Fruit may even be awakened, potentially making him even more formidable than before.

Akainu, why don’t you light some birthday candles, magma brat! — Whitebeard
Akainu Likely Has Conqueror’s Haki
One Of Luffy’s Biggest Enemies In One Piece

Akainu is incredibly powerful, demonstrating strong Haki during the Paramount War. Given his position as a Navy leader, it’s likely he also possesses Conqueror’s Haki – a power previously held by figures like Sengoku and Garp. It would be surprising if Akainu *didn’t* have this ability. Combining all his skills makes Akainu a Marine comparable to the Yonko, the most powerful pirates. It’s only a matter of time before he faces one and demonstrates the strength that earned him a 5 billion berry bounty.

The next chapter of One Piece, chapter 1163, will be released in two weeks, as usual on a Sunday. While it becomes available in Japan at midnight on Monday (JST), most international fans can expect to read it on October 26, 2025. The chapter will be available for free on Manga Plus.
