This article contains spoilers from the One Piece series.
The Admirals are among the most powerful characters in the world of One Piece. They represent the military strength of the World Government and are the Marines’ strongest fighters. While fans have witnessed their incredible power many times, they generally haven’t seemed as strong as the Yonko.
The Admirals are incredibly strong, but the Yonko have consistently demonstrated greater power. Throughout the series, Admirals who have faced the Yonko haven’t been able to gain the advantage. However, Oda has revealed that there’s at least one Admiral in each era capable of going toe-to-toe with a Yonko, and even potentially winning. In the past, that Admiral was Sengoku, who later became Fleet Admiral. Currently, Sakazuki, the current Fleet Admiral, holds that position.
Fleet Admiral Sakazuki Is Yonko Level Right Now

Currently, Fleet Admiral Sakazuki is an incredibly powerful opponent, comparable to the Four Emperors. Since he took command, the Navy has become much more proactive and is now actively challenging even the most powerful pirates in the New World.
Sakazuki is incredibly powerful, and fans recognize him as a major threat. He possesses the Magu Magu no Mi, a Devil Fruit that lets him create and control magma, enabling him to cause widespread devastation.
Within the Navy, only three individuals have reached the rank of Admiral: Akainu, Aokiji, and Kizaru. Above them is Fleet Admiral Sengoku, who leads the entire Navy. Nico Robin, upon seeing Admiral Aokiji, recognized them as part of the “Ultimate Military Force,” a title given to them by the World Government.
Sakazuki is a powerful Haki user, and many fans suspect he can also use Conqueror’s Haki. This belief is supported by the fact that the Cross Guild has placed a bounty of 5 Billion Berries on his head – a figure only surpassed by the bounties of Whitebeard and Gol D. Roger.
Currently, Oda isn’t putting Admiral Akainu in major fights, suggesting his eventual involvement will be incredibly impactful. When Akainu does enter the battle, he’ll demonstrate a level of power that rivals even the strongest pirates, the Yonko.
Admiral Sengoku Was Respected By Roger
I’ve always been fascinated by the history before the current Pirate Era! It’s incredible to think about how powerful some of the older generation were. A lot of fans, myself included, always suspected Admiral Sengoku was on a whole different level – basically, a Yonko-level powerhouse! There used to be a lot of discussion about it, but it’s now pretty clear that even Roger himself saw Sengoku as a truly formidable opponent. It really adds another layer to the world-building, doesn’t it?
Fans recognize that if Roger considered Sengoku a worthy opponent, even if not equal in strength, Sengoku must have been incredibly powerful – on par with the strongest pirates, the Yonko. The fact that even Whitebeard, a legendary pirate himself, had a rivalry with Sengoku further proves he posed a threat equivalent to a Yonko.
Besides Garp, Sengoku is currently the only other Marine we know of who possesses Conqueror’s Haki. This makes him one of the strongest characters from the older generation of the One Piece world, similar to how Akainu is a top-level fighter today.
All Other Admirals Are Weaker Than The Yonko
Compared to powerful figures like Sengoku and Akainu, Admirals like Kizaru, Green Bull, and Fujitora aren’t quite as strong. While they are all incredibly powerful individuals, their accomplishments don’t reach the same level as those two legendary admirals.
I was focused solely on those two: Jinbe and the guy with the straw hat. I told Jinbe to step aside – he used to be one of the Warlords, so he should understand just how powerful I am. Honestly, fighting me is pointless. That’s what I said to him, anyway.
I’ve been following the events closely, and it’s becoming clear that even the Admirals aren’t untouchable. Kuzan himself admitted he wouldn’t have stood a chance against even an older, weaker Garp without Blackbeard’s crew backing him up. And just recently, Greenbull was completely defeated by Shanks. As for Kizaru, he couldn’t beat Luffy – and Luffy hasn’t even reached his full potential as a Yonko yet – and was actually immobilized during their fight. It’s a surprising turn of events, to say the least.
While the Admirals in One Piece are generally not as powerful as the Yonko, Fleet Admiral Akainu and Sengoku are significantly stronger – which is understandable, given that they both rose to the rank of Fleet Admiral.
I’ve been following Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece for a while now, and it’s really exciting to see the story of Monkey D. Luffy and his crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, nearing its end – we’re currently in what’s being called the Final Saga! The newest chapter, 1169, is coming out this week in Weekly Shonen Jump on December 21, 2025. For those of us in the US, it’ll be released in Japan at midnight JST on Monday, which translates to 11:00 AM EST or 8:00 AM PT. The best part is, you can read it for free on Manga Plus and the Shonen Jump app, and by doing so, you’re directly supporting the creator!
