This article contains spoilers from One Piece’s Elbaf Arc.
Monkey D. Luffy, the main character of One Piece, has steadily grown more powerful in his quest to become the Pirate King. He began as an unknown pirate with limited abilities, but his huge ambition has driven him far, even reaching the dangerous New World. Currently, Luffy is recognized as one of the Four Emperors, alongside powerful figures like Shanks and Blackbeard. However, it’s clear to fans that he’s not yet at his full potential and still has room to grow as a fighter.
The final arc of One Piece has begun, and a massive war is about to start. Eiichiro Oda is preparing to showcase the peak of Luffy’s power, and he’s already given fans hints about how strong he’ll become before the series ends. This means we have a good idea of just how powerful Luffy will be when everything is said and done.
Luffy Has Tremendous Potential To Fulfill In The Final Saga
- Luffy has already awakened his Devil Fruit in Wano
- His Haki has a lot of room to grow
It’s clear that Luffy is now among the most powerful characters in One Piece. He’s become incredibly strong since the time skip, thanks to intense Haki training and victories over many tough opponents. But his fight with Kaido was the real turning point. During that battle, Luffy mastered advanced Armament Haki, and after being hit with Kaido’s Conqueror’s Haki, he discovered he could infuse his body with it – unlocking a whole new level of power.
This is the peak of my abilities….this is Gear 5! — Monkey D. Luffy
After Luffy’s unexpected death in the fight with Kaido, his Devil Fruit awakened, bringing forth the legendary Sun God Nika. Using the amazing abilities he developed during the Wano Country arc, Luffy defeated Kaido and earned his place among the Four Emperors of the Sea, joining powerful pirates like Shanks and Blackbeard. Becoming a Yonko proves Luffy is now an incredibly powerful pirate, but fans believe he’s capable of even greater things.
As a huge One Piece fan, I truly believe Luffy’s potential is far from reached! He’s still so young, and I’m convinced we’ll see him get even stronger as the Final Saga unfolds. Kaido himself hinted at this during Wano, suggesting Luffy has a much higher ceiling. Plus, remember how even someone like Scopper Gaban pointed out Luffy’s ability to continue growing? It’s super exciting to think about how much more powerful he can become!
Luffy Will Reach Joy Boy’s Level By The End Of The Series

- Luffy must replicate Joy Boy’s Haki feats
Oda has already given fans a clear idea of just how powerful Luffy will become by the end of the series. The key to understanding Luffy’s ultimate strength lies in the Egghead Island arc, where Oda showed us a sample of Joy Boy’s most potent Haki. Since Joy Boy specifically identified this Haki as his strongest, it represents the peak of his abilities. This is the level Luffy is aiming to reach.
Emeth, I’m going to put my most powerful Haki inside you. Save it and use it when the moment is right. — Joy Boy to Emeth
Joy Boy possessed incredibly powerful Haki, strong enough to split the sky and completely nullify the abilities of the Five Elders, including those from the Abyss. This Haki also knocked out all Vice Admirals nearby and even caused significant pain to Imu. This demonstrates the peak potential of Conqueror’s Haki, and it’s the level of strength Luffy needs to achieve to effectively fight Imu and resolve the events of the past 800 years.
Luffy needs to reach Joy Boy’s level of power, and that is still far beyond him.
Currently, Luffy isn’t fully in control of his Gear 5 transformation. While he’s using it effectively, it doesn’t last long and severely strains his body. Furthermore, his Haki isn’t strong enough yet. He needs to learn to manage and use his Haki more skillfully and improve his overall strength to boost his Conqueror’s Haki. The arc taking place in Elbaf will serve as crucial training for Luffy before the final battle begins, as he won’t have time to prepare once that war starts.
Luffy’s Haki Must Reach Joy Boy’s Level
When the final war in One Piece starts, Luffy will need to be as powerful as the legendary Joy Boy. This means he’ll have completely mastered his Gear 5 transformation and significantly improved his Haki abilities. Oda has already hinted at the level of strength Luffy needs to face Imu and his forces – he’ll have to be stronger than the Five Elders and so dominant that he can defeat Vice Admirals with just his Conqueror’s Haki.
Luffy, be careful with your Conqueror’s Haki. These opponents can still be defeated – they aren’t invincible. – Scopper Gaban
By the end of the One Piece series, Luffy needs to be powerful enough to split the sky on his own – exceeding even the strength of legendary pirates like Roger and Rocks. This means he’ll have to become significantly stronger than Shanks as well. Reaching this level of power is essential for Luffy to defeat Imu, and this isn’t just speculation; it’s a clear expectation established by the author, Oda, during the Egghead arc.
Luffy Could Be The Strongest Overall In One Piece

By the time One Piece concludes, it’s almost certain Luffy will be the most powerful character. He isn’t there yet – characters like Blackbeard and Shanks currently surpass him – but his journey will undoubtedly lead him to the peak of strength.
Luffy’s ultimate goal is to become stronger than Shanks, which means exceeding the power of legendary pirates like Roger and Whitebeard, and everyone else. He’s destined to defeat Imu in the final battle, solidifying his place as the strongest character in the entire One Piece world. Ultimately, Luffy needs to not only equal Joy Boy’s strength but surpass him, succeeding where Joy Boy previously failed.
Eiichiro Oda’s popular manga, One Piece, follows Monkey D. Luffy and his crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, as they search for the legendary treasure called the One Piece. The story is currently in its final arc. A new chapter, number 1172, will be released in this week’s issue of Weekly Shonen Jump on February 1, 2026. In Japan, it will be available at midnight on Monday (11:00 AM EST / 8:00 AM PT). Fans can read the chapter for free on Manga Plus and the Shonen Jump app, which directly supports the author.
