One Piece: Oda Reveals 3 New Gods of the World

This article contains spoilers from One Piece‘s Elbaf arc.

Summary

  • The Sun God Nika existed long before the Void Century, fighting in the First World.
  • The Earth God and the Serpent of Infernal Flames engulfed the world in flames and darkness.
  • The Forest God sent forth demons, while the Sea God’s rage followed the death of the Sun God.

In the Elbaf storyline of “One Piece,” we find ourselves immersed in a wealth of backstory that outshines any other arc within the series. It’s clear that author Eiichiro Oda isn’t close to exhausting the extensive lore drops from this particular arc. In chapter 1138, Oda unveiled significant pieces of information, largely due to Franky observing a giant mural on the Adam Tree and Robin translating the Harley texts following Saul’s gift of the book.

In essence, this text highlights that there is a substantial amount of data to process, but the key point to focus on is Oda’s confirmation of multiple deities existing within the One Piece universe. To put it simply, we now know that four Gods have been confirmed as genuine in this world, and their presence promises to enrich the series significantly, either through conflict or other means.

2. The Existence Of The Sun God — Creation And Reincarnation

  • The Sun God Was Born Long Before The Void Century
  • The Sun God Fought In The First World

It’s not surprising to fans of One Piece that there are multiple deities in the world, considering the central story arc, Skypiea, has already shown their existence. The God of the Sun, Rain, Forest, and Earth were all introduced during Noland’s backstory, and these deities have now been officially confirmed in the Harley texts.

In the realm of the Sun God, it has long been recognized by followers that this divine being once walked among us. The authenticity of the Sun God was substantiated in Wano, marking the resurrection of Sun God Nika. It is strongly suggested that Joy Boy, an ancient figure from the Void Century, shared similar powers. However, Elbaf added another layer to the narrative by disclosing to fans that the One Piece world has faced destruction not once but twice, and each time, the name of Sun God Nika was invoked. This implies that the pre-Joy Boy incarnation of Nika wasn’t a myth, but a real figure who fought an enigmatic adversary in ancient times. In chapter 1138 of One Piece, readers were finally given an explanation for the origins of this deity. It is believed that eons ago, the world was engulfed by flames, which were possibly harnessed to create an endless energy source. As humanity’s greed flourished, they reached out and seized the sun’s power, ruling as supreme rulers. Inevitably, the eternal flame required human labor to be transformed into energy, leading to the enslavement of people. At this juncture, they pleaded for the Sun God’s assistance.

The mural in Elbaf depicts that the Sun Deity descended from the heavens in Ark Maxim in response to the plight of the enslaved, showing both joy and combativeness. This is why enslaved people have always invoked the Sun Deity during hardships. Interestingly, Nika’s emergence provoked divine anger, leading the deity to ultimately flip the world on its head.

1. The Other Three Gods Of The One Piece World

The Harley Explains The Existence Of Other Gods

The Earth God And The Serpent Of Infernal Flames

Fire consumed the earth, stirring deep human yearnings to defy the known boundaries and grasp the radiant Sun. Enslaved souls pleaded, and a deity embodying solar power materialized. The wrathful Earth God roared, joining forces with the infernal serpent of flames, casting a pall of death and darkness over the world. Their paths would never intersect again.

Upon the appearance of the Sun Deity, the Harley explicitly indicates that the Earth Deity was infuriated. This Deity subsequently allied with the infernal serpent of flames and collectively, they engaged in combat against the Sun Deity Nika. This conflict resulted in the devastation of the world, resulting in mass casualties and potentially leaving only a handful of individuals who could rebuild civilization. The Earth Deity is hinted at being Imu, however, it’s also known that Imu was once one of the 20 ancient Kings, suggesting that he may have inherited the power of the Earth Deity in much the same way Luffy inherited the power of the Sun God.

The Forest God And His Army Of Demons

Life awoke in the emptiness, and the Forest Deity unleashed its demons. The Sun merely expanded the flames of conflict. The inhabitants of the crescent moon had visions, as did those of the full moon. Humans murdered the Sun and ascended to divinity, and the Sea God grew enraged. A reunion between them would never occur.

Centuries have passed since life resumed, and it’s plausible that the inhabitants from the initial era, who were presumably highly advanced, were the ancestors of the Ancient Kingdom. This is where Oda introduces the enigmatic Forest Deity, whose true nature is yet to be revealed. It’s suggested that this Deity summons demons, implying that Devil Fruits may have been created by this entity or that people received demonic powers in a manner similar to how Imu bestows abilities upon the Elders. Oda needs to clarify the origins of the Forest Deity and the Army of Demons associated with it. Is the Army of Demons merely users of Devil Fruits who fought on both sides, or could it be Imu’s powerful fighters, like the Elders, who have been referred to as demons in the past? The former scenario seems less likely. The half-moon and full-moon races, possibly the D and the winged beings respectively, might have been the ones who developed Devil Fruits using their dreams, and Joy Boy was born to confront them again.

The Sea God

It’s believed that humans once extinguished the Sun, which can be interpreted as either the Sun deity named Nika or the eternal energy source crafted by the Ancient Realm. If the Sun ceased to exist, they would lose their strength, and this period coincides with the demise of Joy Boy, who was also known as the Sun deity Nika. Subsequently, the Sea deity became enraged. However, it’s uncertain who the Sea deity actually is. If the Earth deity is Imu, then the Sea deity might be a reference to Poseidon or the Mermaid Princess. It’s possible that she was the one responsible for Imu losing control over the Mother Flame and being banished into the shadows permanently.

According to this understanding of the Harley texts, fans have identified three out of the four divine beings: Luffy is believed to be the Sun God, Imu is the Earth God, and Shirahoshi could be the Sea God. The deity associated with the Forest remains undiscovered, as does the identity of the Serpent of Infernal Flames (which might have evolved into the Red Line). Oda may reveal these mysteries in future storylines.
