One Piece: Oda Reveals The King Of The World Before Imu

This article contains spoilers from One Piece’s Elbaf arc.

The God Valley arc in One Piece continues to surprise fans with huge revelations, and chapter 1164 might be the biggest one yet. The story is currently centered around Rocks D. Xebec and his fate at God Valley 38 years ago. Along with this, the author, Oda, has introduced the Davy Clan and confirmed the existence of Davy D. Jones, a legendary figure likely connected to the mysteries of the Void Century.

Fans initially dismissed Davy D. Jones as just a minor character introduced early in One Piece. However, the author, Oda, has strongly hinted – and now confirmed – that Jones was a significant pirate from the past. Even more surprisingly, it’s been revealed that Jones was known as ‘King’ before Imu, meaning he once ruled the world. This explains why Rocks D. Xebec sought to become King of the World, and why Blackbeard also desires to control everything.

Chapter 1164 of One Piece delivered a major surprise: Rocks D. Xebec revealed that Davy Jones was the previous World Government ruler. Building on his previous statement about upholding a promise to Imu, it’s now clear what Rocks meant – he intends to fulfill Davy Jones’ agreement with Imu.

Centuries ago, probably during the time known as the Void Century, Davy Jones was likely the ruler of the world. However, he was defeated and overthrown by Imu and the 20 Kings. According to legend, he was then either cursed and forced to endlessly sail the ocean floor, or simply killed. Despite this, his spirit – his Will – remained, and Davy Jones vowed to Imu that he would return to reclaim his throne.

This explains why Rocks met Imu in the Flower Room at Pangaea Castle in Marijoa and pledged to return, and why he originally sought to become King of the World. It also clarifies why Blackbeard now desires to control the world and carry out the Will of D.

Joy Boy Never Became The King

Emeth’s Apology Confirms Joy Boy Was Not King

Many fans have been asking if Joy Boy was a king during the Void Century. The answer is no. It was directly stated in the One Piece Egghead arc that Joy Boy never became king. Emeth even apologized to Joy Boy for failing to make him king, implying that while Joy Boy desired the title, he wasn’t able to obtain it.

The spirit of Joy Boy continues through Luffy. While it’s uncertain if Luffy will become a king, it doesn’t seem to align with his personality. He values freedom above all else, and once the world is liberated, he’ll likely prioritize that freedom over ruling it.

The newest chapter of One Piece will be released this week, as it typically is on Sundays. While it becomes available in Japan at midnight on Monday (JST), most fans around the world will be able to read it on November 2nd. The chapter will be available to read for free on Manga Plus.
