Summary
- Jinbei joined the Straw Hats after seeing Luffy’s potential, aiding them in critical moments.
- Kaido, once part of Rocks Pirates, grew powerful and formed his own Beast Pirates crew.
- Big Mom’s appearance changed but retained her strength; Nami initially joined Arlong, later trusting the Straw Hats.
Frequently in the realm of One Piece, when a pirate gathers a group they can label as a crew, they tend to stay with these individuals until the final chapter, although not every soul delights in setting sail under the same banner throughout the entire journey. Remarkably, some characters across the series have had the fortune to switch between various crews, thus sharing captivating tales about their past experiences with both viewers and readers.
It’s intriguing to observe how diverse the crews are in terms of beliefs and culture, and yet, it’s equally captivating to see how these varied experiences have shaped and transformed the pirates over their extraordinary voyages. Here are some prominent characters from the One Piece story who have demonstrated loyalty to multiple crews.
8. Jinbei
Jinbei Liked What He Saw From Luffy And Decided To Dedicate His Skills To The Straw Hats
- First Appearance: Episode 430
As the ex-crew member and eventual captain of the Sun Pirates, Jinbe was widely regarded as the symbol of the Fishmen community. To strive for balance between Fishmen and humans, Jinbe accepted an offer to join the Shichibukai, serving under the World Government’s command. However, when the Marineford War broke out, Jinbe made a conscious decision to participate in the conflict, using his abilities to defend Luffy, whom he had heard some information about from Ace.
Ever since then, I’ve found myself popping up here and there to lend a hand to Luffy and his band of pirates. For instance, during our adventure at Whole Cake Island, I valiantly held off Big Mom’s fleet to give us a chance for a swift escape. Initially, my desire to join this crew was expressed during the Fishman Island arc, but it wasn’t until the daring raid on Onigashima, deep into the Wano arc, that my wish finally came true.
7. Kaido
The Mighty Yonko Was Once A Member Of The Legendary Rocks Pirates
- First Appearance: Episode 739
In the Wano arc, it’s surprising to think that Kaido, known for his dominating presence and power, once had a superior. This unexpected revelation shows that there was someone he obeyed in the past. In the main storyline, Kaido stands as the commander of the Beast Pirates, a group notorious for their immoral activities with Doflamingo, which has resulted in the creation of an army of monstrous beings through artificial Devil Fruits. However, in the past, Kaido was merely part of the Rocks pirate crew, one of several legendary pirates that existed long ago.
This passage clarifies why Kaido harbors such intense animosity towards Big Mom and why he seemed so acquainted with Whitebeard upon his initial descent from Skypiea. As a pirate, Kaido rapidly amassed an unbelievable amount of power while sailing alongside Rocks, making it almost predictable that he would eventually establish his own crew. Initially, constructing a private army in Wano proved beneficial, as the Marines didn’t interfere with the country; however, in the end, Kaido was ultimately thwarted by none other than Luffy.
6. Big Mom
Big Mom’s Appearance May Have Changed When Switching Crews, But She’s Still As Dangerous As Ever
- First Appearance: Episode 571
During their mission to rescue Sanji from Whole Cake Island, Luffy and his Straw Hat crew swiftly understand why Big Mom’s name alone can instill fear. As a Yonko, Big Mom possesses the power to squash anyone who dares approach her island with her formidable Armament Haki and Homie skills. However, after many years of tea parties and sugary banquets, Big Mom isn’t quite the sprightly character she once was.
In her days with Rocks, alongside Whitebeard and Kaido, Big Mom appeared virtually unrecognizable, save for her distinctive bright lipstick and pink hair. Age hasn’t diminished her menace; in fact, she remains as formidable as ever. Her troop of children, all eager to fight for their mother out of fear, contributes significantly to the terrifying reputation Big Mom has built as a pirate.
5. Whitebeard
Whitebeard Would Acquire His Kind Fatherly Persona After Separating From The Rocks Crew
- First Appearance: Episode 485
In the main story, Whitebeard appears as a benevolent, paternal figure to his crew. However, it seems that this wasn’t always his character. Fans speculate, based on brief glimpses into his past with the Rocks crew, that Whitebeard might have been far more ruthless during his time under Rocks’ command.
As the Rocks Pirates disbanded, Kaido and Big Mom stubbornly clung to their old ways, whereas Whitebeard transformed into a more compassionate figure, earning deep loyalty from his crew who regarded him as a loving father figure. Despite his tragic death during the Marineford War, Whitebeard’s transformation and growth throughout his adventures make him an intriguing pirate character whose impact continues to resonate in the story today.
4. Shanks
Shanks Spent Much Of His Childhood Aboard Roger’s Ship Before Eventually Becoming A Yonko
- First Appearance: Episode 1
From an outside perspective, what’s captivating about Shanks is the enigmatic allure that follows him throughout the series. As we approach the climax of this epic tale, the creator, Oda, has been subtly revealing more insights into Shanks’ history, particularly his time serving under Gol D. Roger. Given his advanced age, Shanks wasn’t yet at the pinnacle of his power during those days, but he was still present in significant events like the confrontation with the Whitebeard pirates. Remarkably, Shanks even reached the location of the One Piece treasure, although he never got to lay eyes on it due to a need to care for an ailing Buggy at that moment.
Although Shanks might have been a minor member on Roger’s team, it wouldn’t be correct to judge him that way when he takes command, considering his impressive stature as captain in the wider world. Notably, Shanks boasts one of the most powerful pirate crews featured prominently in the current storyline of One Piece, consisting of renowned fighters like Ben Beckman and Lucky Roux.
3. Nami
Initially, Nami Had No Intention Of Sailing The Seas With Luffy And The Crew In The Long-Term
- First Appearance: Episode 1
Initially, Nami wasn’t planning to voyage with Luffy, Usopp, and Zoro for an extended period. However, circumstances compelled a change in her plans. A malevolent Fishman named Arlong seized control of her homeland, taking the life of her mother. To regain freedom for her village, Nami was pressured into joining Arlong’s crew, under the condition that she would collect enough Berries to make it happen.
Despite amassing sufficient treasure, Arlong broke his promise and continued to instill fear until Luffy and his pirate comrades intervened. Their readiness to risk their lives for someone who had deceived them demonstrated to Nami that this unconventional band of pirates shouldn’t be underestimated. From then on, she proved herself an indispensable crew member, using her exceptional navigation skills and Clima-Tact abilities to guide the crew through numerous perilous situations.
2. Blackbeard
Blackbeard Betrayed Whitebeard’s Family To Form His Own
- First Appearance: Episode 146
Blackbeard, once embraced as part of Whitebeard’s pirate crew after a life as an orphan, disgraced himself by betraying and killing one of his comrades. This treacherous act was unforgivable for a pirate. The catalyst for this change was the acquisition of the Yami Yami no Mi fruit by the crew’s doctor, Thatch, which grants control over darkness.
After murdering Thatch and fleeing from the crew, Blackbeard devised a scheme to free numerous extremely perilous convicts from Impel Down prison, thereby formally establishing the Blackbeard Pirates. The act of Blackbeard deserting the Whitebeard pirates had profound consequences, as it was Blackbeard’s actions that led to Ace’s execution, demonstrating his exceptional strategic prowess in orchestrating such a complex plan.
1. Kozuki Oden
Oden’s Dream To Open Wano’s Borders Led Him To Become A Member Of The World’s Two Most Well-Known Pirate Crews
- First Appearance: Episode 960
In the world of One Piece, it’s hard to find anyone with greater boasts than Oden, given his unique membership in both Whitebeard’s and Gol D. Roger’s crews. As Wano started feeling congested, Oden chose to explore the sea, humbly asking Whitebeard for a spot on his crew after the powerful Yonko arrived on the island. It didn’t take long before Oden earned the title of one of Whitebeard’s “sons” and proved himself to be a faithful member of the team, with his swordsmanship making him an invaluable asset.
After the fierce battle between Whitebeard’s and Roger’s pirate crews, the future pirate king requested that Whitebeard let Oden accompany him on his journey. This was because Oden could decipher Poneglyphs, and with him aboard, the crew gained knowledge about the truth of the Void Century, the significance behind the D signature, and even the secret location of One Piece.
