This article contains spoilers from One Piece‘s Elbaf arc.
Haki is becoming increasingly important in the story of One Piece. Introduced right before the timeskip, it’s a vital power for surviving and competing with the strongest characters in the New World. Essentially, Haki is a spiritual energy that can sharpen senses, increase strength and defense, and even dominate opponents. Everyone possesses Haki at birth, but only some are able to unlock its potential.
Throughout the One Piece series, Eiichiro Oda has introduced incredibly strong characters who wield Haki, and he consistently demonstrates new and unique ways it can be used. Recently, in the Elbaf arc, Oda has frequently hinted at the existence of advanced Conqueror’s Haki. But beyond that, he’s also revealed a rare and potent form of Haki used by very few people. Notably, Rocks D. Xebec was the first known user of a devastating Haki ability – it could obliterate everything around him, even when channeled through a sword, essentially turning it into a powerful blast like a cannon.

Rocks’s Swordsmanship Was Special

The Elbaf arc of One Piece gave fans their first real look at the powerful character of Rocks D. Xebec. Although he was briefly mentioned earlier in the Wano arc around chapter 957, his proper introduction – and his connection to King Harald and Loki – happened in Elbaf. What viewers were most curious about was just how strong Rocks D. Xebec actually was.
Rocks was famous for his incredibly powerful attacks. They were said to strike with the force of a hammer or a cannon blast, completely obliterating anything in their way, according to the narrator describing his unique technique.
From the beginning, Rocks was presented as Roger’s greatest enemy, even more dangerous than Whitebeard. It took the combined power of Garp and Roger to defeat him, and fans have been eager to witness his incredible strength in One Piece. That expectation was finally met during the events in Elbaf.

From the moment Rocks D. Xebec appeared, Oda established that he fought in a unique way, wielding a special type of Haki. Rocks didn’t simply cut with his sword; instead, his Haki-infused attacks were more like powerful blasts that obliterated everything around him, creating widespread destruction. Oda confirmed that these attacks functioned less like sword slashes and more like the impact of a massive hammer or cannon fire. This effect was achieved through a particularly potent and unusual application of Haki.
Who could that be? It’s the world itself! – Rocks, upon seeing Imu
Luffy Needs To Learn Blasting Haki
Roger And Shanks Learned Rocks’s Haki As Well

The origins of Rocks’ unique and flawed Haki fighting style are a mystery. It’s unclear if anyone used it before him, but we know two others eventually learned it. Roger mastered this ability, demonstrated by his technique called Kamusari. Currently, Shanks is the only character in the One Piece world who possesses this power.

Shanks possesses a rare and powerful form of Haki, similar to that of Rocks, and it’s likely Luffy will develop it as well, possibly during the events in Elbaf. Even without a sword, Luffy can likely achieve a similar effect using his Gomu Gomu no Mi abilities, as his attacks don’t rely on sharpness. We might see him utilize this power for the first time when facing Imu.
I’m so hyped – One Piece Chapter 1163 is coming out this week! Like clockwork, it’ll be released on Sunday, which means it hits Japan at midnight on Monday their time. But for those of us outside Japan, we’re looking at October 26th to finally dive in. That’s the official release date, and the best part is, it’s totally free to read on Manga Plus! Can’t wait!
