Sanji became a member of the Straw Hat Pirates after they assisted the chefs of the Baratie in defending against Don Krieg and his crew. While he joined as a cook, Sanji has contributed far more than just amazing food. He’s played a key role in many of the crew’s adventures, consistently keeping viewers engaged and excited.
It’s hard to pick just a few standout moments because he’s created so many memorable ones for fans. Therefore, this list focuses on the lasting significance of each amazing play, rather than just how much excitement it caused at the time.
This post contains spoilers for One Piece.
Saving Usopp From Enel
Sacrificed His Safety For A Crewmate
- Made sure that Usopp lived to see another day
The Skypiea arc had many memorable moments that still impact the story today. Beyond its place in One Piece history, it introduced Enel, a truly wicked villain. He destroyed his own country and then took control of Skypiea with force. Because of his unique Devil Fruit power, it was incredibly difficult for the Straw Hats to even damage him.
During a fight, Usopp was severely injured by Enel, who shocked him with incredibly powerful electricity. It seemed like Usopp wouldn’t survive. However, Sanji bravely jumped in, risking his own life to kick Usopp away from danger and onto Nami’s scooter, getting him to safety. Sanji then took the full force of Enel’s next attack, which would have been fatal to anyone else. Remarkably, instead of falling, Sanji actually thanked Enel, joking that the attack had lit his cigarette.
Protecting The Vinsmoke Family
Showed His Kindness By Helping The People He Hated The Most
- Freed his family members from the clutches of the Big Mom Pirates
I watched as Sanji endured a really tough childhood with the Vinsmokes – everyone except Reiju and Sora was incredibly harsh to him, even physically abusive. Despite everything they put him through, he never lost his good heart. It was ironic, seeing Judge and his other sons ridicule Sanji during the Whole Cake Island arc, because he ended up being the one who saved their lives when they were in serious trouble.
During the Tea Party, the Big Mom Pirates unexpectedly turned on the Vinsmoke Family. Perospero then used his powers to trap Judge and his children, leaving them vulnerable. The pirates were poised to eliminate the Vinsmokes and seize their advanced technology. However, Sanji and his friends arrived just in time to intervene. Sanji used his powerful kicks to shatter the candy that was holding his father and siblings captive, demonstrating his unwavering compassion and refusal to let anyone be defeated by a bully.
Freeing Momonosuke From Captivity
Protected Momonosuke From Certain Death
- Single-handedly saved Wano’s future
Momonosuke played a crucial role in the Wano Country arc. As the son of the former ruler, Kozuki Oden, he was destined to lead Wano after him. Knowing this, Kaido planned to execute Momonosuke publicly as a way to crush any hope for rebellion. Momonosuke was severely beaten and chained up, and King and Queen were assigned to guard him to ensure no one could interfere.
Almost no one dared to try and save Momonosuke, because two of Kaido’s most powerful allies were guarding him. However, Sanji refused to let the boy be executed without a fight. Using the invisibility feature of his Raid Suit, he slipped past Kaido’s commanders and rescued Momonosuke. Sanji then entrusted the boy to Shinobu, who led him to safety. Had Sanji not intervened, the alliance would have lost hope and their fighting spirit.
Asking Robin To Save Him
Finally Let Go Of His Past Trauma
- Showed how much he has changed
I’ve always felt Sanji’s history really shaped who he is. He seemed determined to never be a bother to his friends, so he consistently handled things independently. It was surprising to see him ask Robin for help during the Wano arc – he usually kept everything to himself, so it definitely caught everyone off guard.
People criticized Sanji, calling him both weak and selfish, but this was actually a really strong moment for his character. It demonstrated how far he’d come from his past, when he desperately needed help but was always ignored. It also highlighted his deep trust in Robin, because he wouldn’t have asked her for assistance if he didn’t truly rely on her.
Beating Queen Effortlessly In Wano
Strongest Test Of Sanji’s Strength
- Sanji persevered against a dangerous opponent
Sanji’s victories have been crucial to the Straw Hat Pirates’ success. He’s a powerful fighter, and without him, the crew wouldn’t have made it as far as they have. A prime example of his strength was his battle against Queen, a member of the All-Stars.
Sanji decisively won his battle and powerfully showed he doesn’t need his father’s scientific enhancements. It’s particularly meaningful that he defeated Queen, who was allied with Judge and heavily reliant on scientific weapons. Sanji’s win represented his strong will and his desire to escape his family history.
