One Piece: Strongest Non-Captains In The Series

Highlights

  • In One Piece, strength doesn’t always correlate with captaincy – characters like Marco & Zoro prove to be formidable without it.
  • Marco, Zoro, Rayleigh, Kuzan, Mihawk, and Oden showcase strength and reputation that surpass their crew leaders in One Piece.
  • From Whitebeard’s First Division Commander Marco to the world’s strongest swordsman Mihawk, these characters are forces to be reckoned with.

As a seasoned One Piece fanatic, I must say that the characters in this series are nothing short of extraordinary! Each one has their unique abilities and backstories that make them stand out.

As a swashbuckling seafarer in a band of buccaneers, I understand that our captain holds the utmost authority. Their decisions are final and unchallengeable, leaving no room for debate or second-guessing. This is due to their commanding presence and power, which places them at the helm of our crew.

In the world of “One Piece,” it’s not always the case that pirate captains have more reputation or strength than their subordinates. In fact, there are several instances where some pirates possess greater renown and power compared to their leaders. These characters might not hold the title of captain, but they should never be underestimated as they can swiftly overpower their adversaries.

6 Marco

Affiliation: Whitebeard Pirates

One Piece: Strongest Non-Captains In The Series

Marco was once the top commander in the First Division of the Whitebeard Pirates. He initially joined their ranks as an apprentice and eventually rose to be Whitebeard’s most trusted ally. This pirate wielder of the Tori Tori no Mi, Phoenix Model, a rare Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit, has the power to transform himself into a blue phoenix whenever he desires.

1. His Devil Fruit grants him an incredible resilience, enabling him to heal from various wounds. Skilled in Haki, Marco often amplifies his attack power by integrating both techniques. The Five Elders themselves have identified Marco as one who might stand a chance against Blackbeard in combat.

During the Payback War, it fell to Marco to take charge of the crew on a temporary basis. However, this doesn’t mean that he held the permanent position of captain.

5 Roronoa Zoro

Affiliation: Straw Hat Pirates

One Piece: Strongest Non-Captains In The Series

Among the select Straw Hat members, Roronoa Zoro already held a well-established reputation prior to joining the crew. Known for his pursuit of pirates, he was commonly known as “Pirate Hunter.”

As soon as Zoro joined the team, it was evident why he was so revered in East Blue. His distinctive three-sword technique sets him apart from other contenders, and he uses it to overcome his adversaries. Just like all Straw Hats, Zoro’s power has grown with each new storyline, enabling him now to battle opponents of Rob Lucci’s and King’s caliber. By the end of the series, Zoro will have fulfilled his ambition of becoming the world’s top swordsman, and he’ll be as renowned as his captain.

4 Silvers Rayleigh

Affiliation: Roger Pirates

One Piece: Strongest Non-Captains In The Series

Silvers Rayleigh is one of the rare surviving comrades from the Roger Pirates. When Roger proposed forming a crew and overturning the world, Rayleigh could hardly imagine it would actually happen. Though Roger is undeniably the most renowned character in One Piece, Rayleigh isn’t far from being well-known too.

In the Sabaody arc, it wasn’t long before Rayleigh took center stage. He squared off against Admiral Kizaru who had recently knocked out several members of the Worst Generation and was about to send the Straw Hats to jail. Not only did Rayleigh halt the Admiral, but he also inflicted injuries upon him. Another demonstration of his power and prestige is when he prevented Blackbeard from beheading Hancock on Amazon Lily.

3 Kuzan

Affiliation: Blackbeard Pirates

One Piece: Strongest Non-Captains In The Series

Originally serving in the Navy, Kuzan departed following a disheartening loss to Sakazuki. In the end, he opted for membership with the Blackbeard Pirates and attained the position of one of the Ten Titanic Captains. During his tenure with the Navy, Kuzan held the esteemed rank of Admiral, positioning him among the most formidable combatants within the organization.

Through his apprenticeship under Garp, Kuzan’s physical prowess surpasses that of many characters in One Piece. He boasts an astonishing level of strength, evident during the Egghead arc. His mastery over Haki is remarkable too, as demonstrated by his ability to endure a ten-day battle against Akainu. Additionally, Kuzan wields the Hie Hie no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit that grants him the power to freeze anything. Currently, he stands among the strongest characters in One Piece.

2 Dracule Mihawk

Affiliation: Cross Guild

One Piece: Strongest Non-Captains In The Series

Dracule Mihawk helped establish the Cross Guild, but because of an error committed by Buggy’s subordinates, many people believe he serves loyally under a Yonko leader. Yet, fans recognize his power and understand the feats that the swordsman can accomplish.

Mihawk is the world’s strongest swordsman, a title that he has held for years without a challenge. He wields Yoru, an all-black blade that falls within the Saijo O-Wazamono bracket. Mihawk has dedicated his life to fighting strong opponents, and he has taken down most of them, save for a few exceptions. Given his accomplishments, there is no doubt that Mihawk is far superior to his captain, Buggy, and he would destroy him in a fight.

1 Kozuki Oden

Affiliation: Roger Pirates, Whitebeard Pirates (former)

One Piece: Strongest Non-Captains In The Series

Kozuki Oden served as the feudal lord (daimyo) of Kuri, with the potential to ascend to the position of Shogun following Sukiyaki. Yet, such matters held little significance for Oden, who harbored a strong desire to venture beyond Wano and discover the diverse array of people and realms that lay beyond its borders.

At first, Oden served as the Second Division Commander in the Whitebeard Pirates. However, after encountering Roger and accepting his offer, he switched allegiance to the Roger Pirates. Although Oden was already powerful, his experiences led him to even greater strength. In the end, Oden managed to inflict a scar on Kaido’s body, a wound that would have proven fatal if not for Higurashi’s intervention. This means that Kaido would have perished and the Kozuki Clan would have ruled Wano instead.
