A captain plays a vital role in any team. Without strong leadership, a crew can quickly become directionless. As fans of One Piece know, a captain’s personality and guidance can greatly impact the team’s spirit.
Beyond simply giving orders, a captain is usually the most powerful member of their crew. Eiichiro Oda has created many pirate captains who are strong enough to handle any challenge.

6. Trafalgar Law

Trafalgar Law leads the Heart Pirates and is known as one of the eleven powerful pirates of his generation. He first appeared during the events at Sabaody Archipelago and quickly stood out. After a two-year gap in the story, his role expanded as he began working alongside the Straw Hat Pirates.
Trafalgar Law has a Devil Fruit called the Ope Ope no Mi, which gives him the power to create a special zone, or ‘ROOM,’ where he can control himself and others. This allows him to perform unique and powerful attacks. Law has also mastered his Devil Fruit to an even greater extent, making him a formidable opponent. However, his Haki, a form of spiritual energy, isn’t as strong as some other powerful characters, and he wouldn’t be able to overcome opponents like Big Mom or Blackbeard with it alone.
5. Big Mom

Big Mom was one of the Four Emperors, ruling the Big Mom Pirates. Her crew was notorious and feared worldwide. While everyone on board was a skilled fighter, Big Mom herself was the most powerful. She mastered all three types of Haki, making her strong enough to battle even a formidable opponent like Kaido.
Big Mom possessed the power of a Devil Fruit that let her steal people’s souls. This drastically weakened them, and she could even steal their lifespan, causing death. She used fragments of her own soul to create strong, loyal creatures called homies who fought for her. In desperate situations, she could sacrifice her own lifespan to become even more powerful. Because of these incredible abilities, even the strongest pirates did everything they could to avoid battling her.
4. Kaido

Kaido earned the title of the world’s strongest creature through incredible power. He faced brutal battles from a young age, making him a relentless fighter. As he grew, Kaido prioritized strength above all else, constantly seeking to improve and challenge powerful opponents.

Kaido’s constant battles made his Haki incredibly strong, eventually allowing him to use its most advanced forms. He also ate the Uo Uo no Mi, a powerful Devil Fruit that let him transform into a gigantic Azure Dragon. Because he fought so often, Kaido had masterful control over his Devil Fruit abilities, seamlessly switching between his human-animal hybrid and full dragon forms.
3. Monkey D. Luffy

Monkey D. Luffy is the central character in One Piece. Beginning his journey in the East Blue, he’s traveled to many islands and faced numerous strong opponents. These difficult battles have helped Luffy grow into an incredibly powerful fighter, capable of challenging even the strongest pirates, known as Yonko.
Luffy’s Devil Fruit, the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, gives him a rubber body and allows him to make things around him bounce as well. He’s also mastered all three types of Haki, including their most advanced forms – a rare feat. This powerful combination of abilities is what allowed Luffy to become a Yonko at a historically young age.
2. Blackbeard

Blackbeard leads the Blackbeard Pirates and quickly became one of the world’s most powerful pirates, known as a Yonko. He achieved this remarkable status in just a few years through careful planning. Blackbeard is known for only making a move when he’s confident he’ll win.
Blackbeard is both clever and incredibly strong. Possessing the powers of the Yami Yami no Mi and the Gura Gura no Mi, he’s a dangerous opponent. These two Devil Fruits give him the ability to easily defeat entire armies.

Shanks is widely considered the most powerful character in One Piece. Despite not having a Devil Fruit ability, he’s the strongest pirate sailing the seas, thanks to his incredibly potent Haki.
Shanks demonstrated remarkable mastery of Haki even as a young teenager. He was able to perform advanced techniques, such as Divine Departure, at just 14 years old. Over time, his Haki skills have continued to develop, making him widely considered the most proficient Haki user.
