Summary
- Admiral Sakazuki (AKA Akainu) ruthlessly murdered Portgas D. Ace, showcasing his cruelty and coldness.
- Saint Charlos, a despicable Celestial Dragon, enslaved civilians and faced satisfying comeuppances by various characters.
- Kurozumi Orochi, Wano’s cruel dictator, betrayed allies and earned a satisfying demise during the Raid on Onigashima.
Over the course of its impressive 28-year duration, One Piece boasts a vast ensemble of characters numbering in the thousands. Thankfully, the majority of these characters are endearing and engaging, having earned their place among the most memorable figures in the realm of anime and manga. Characters like Luffy, Nami, Zoro, Shanks, and even Roger stand out as iconic representatives.
In the captivating pirate tale we’re discussing, not all characters are endearing; in fact, many are downright detestable. The author, Eiichiro Oda, skillfully crafts characters that elicit disdain from readers, as they play significant roles in the story. Their eventual downfall offers a sense of justice that is immensely gratifying to witness. It’s no secret that One Piece is filled with loathsome characters, but these eight are the most detestable of them all.
8. Caesar Clown
A Twisted, Evil Scientist That Experimented On Children
- Debut: Chapter 658 (Manga) Episode 581 (Anime)
In the vibrant world of One Piece, I’ve come across numerous intellectuals who, despite their brilliance, harbor malicious intent. A significant number of these individuals were once affiliated with MADS. Among the most infamous is none other than Caesar Clown. To begin with, during his initial arc, he took delight in contaminating Luffy and his companions with his harmful gases. His amusement stemmed from their agony, and he further taunted them with his grating, albeit unforgettable (and admittedly iconic), laughter.
However, what solidified Caesar’s reputation as one of the most detested characters in the “One Piece” universe was his consistent practice of subjecting innocents to cruel experiments, particularly children who had been taken away from their families. This deplorable act has left both the audience and the Straw Hat Pirates with an intense dislike for Caesar Clown. Regardless of any comedic aspects he may display, it’s highly unlikely that he will ever be seen in a positive light or redeemed.
7. Vinsmoke Judge
Sanji’s Cold And Abusive Father
- Debut: Chapter 832 (Manga) Episode 793 (Anime)
Judge Vinsmoke, much like Caesar Clown of MADS, is a scientist with an evil streak. However, his actions may surpass those of his colleague in terms of heinousness: not only did he conduct horrific experiments on children, but these atrocities included his own offspring. His objective was to manipulate their genetic makeup, transforming them into powerful warriors devoid of emotions. Unfortunately, Sanji, one of his children, was born without any such enhancements. Consequently, Judge treated him with contempt, abandonment, and even imprisonment.
Sanji managed to break free from his family life and found success with the Straw Hat Pirates until an unexpected partnership between Judge and the Big Mom Pirates forced him into a marriage proposal with one of Big Mom’s daughters. When Judge was eventually double-crossed by the Emperor of the Sea, he displayed emotions reminiscent of a distraught child, a stark contrast to his past neglectful behavior towards his own children. To add salt to the wound, despite Sanji’s numerous demonstrations of strength and skill, Judge continued to belittle and undermine him.
6. Spandam
A Nepotist Coward Who Relentlessly Tortured Robin
- Debut: Chapter 355 (Manga) Episode 249 (Anime)
From my perspective as an onlooker, it’s hard to find many villains as irritating as Spandam, the head of Cipher Pol 9 during the Enies Lobby Arc. Don’t let his lofty title deceive you; he earned it due to his family connection, being the son of the previous chief, Spandine. Consequently, it should come as no shock that Spandam lacks combat skills and often delegates fighting tasks to his agents instead.
However, what’s been discussed so far merely scratches the surface of Spandam’s misdeeds. He not only pilfered Franky’s warships for a malicious assault on Water 7, falsely implicating him and leading to his mentor Tom’s execution. During the Enies Lobby Arc, he relentlessly tormented and attacked a captive Nico Robin, who was powerless to retaliate. Thankfully, she managed to exact her revenge and fractured his spine in two. Regrettably, Spandam endured that injury and was elevated to CP0, further fueling the disdain of many viewers.
5. Absalom
A Creepy Pervert With An Annoying Personality
- Debut: Chapter 444 (Manga) Episode 339 (Anime)
In the initial appearance of Absalom, he aggressively attacked a vulnerable Nami while she was in the shower, and this wasn’t meant for humor; instead, it was intended to portray him as unsettling and disturbing. Throughout the Thriller Bark Arc, his reputation didn’t improve significantly. He abducted Nami, attempted to force her into marriage, and even clashed with Sanji over who should possess the Suke Suke no Mi’s abilities, using them to spy on women.
It’s not surprising at all that Absalom is widely seen as both irritating and revolting, with many fans of Sanji claiming this character was the cause for his increasing lewd behavior towards the end of the pre-time skip era. In fact, Absalom is so detestable that he was callously dispatched off-screen by the Blackbeard Pirates, a death that appears to have been met with indifference or forgetfulness by everyone (with the notable exception of Gecko Moria).
4. Kurozumi Orochi
Wano’s Cruel Dictator Is Also A Resentful Traitor
- Debut: Chapter 927 (Manga) Episode 921 (Anime)
It’s undeniable that Kurozumi Orochi’s past is filled with hardship and injustice, yet it doesn’t excuse his actions. He manipulated and deceived numerous individuals who had extended him aid (such as the Oden Family or Shimotsuki Yasuie), ultimately seizing control of Wano with the backing of the Beasts Pirates. However, compared to Kaido, who commands such fear and might that he deserves his status, Orochi is a coward, preferring to spend his days within his castle, ensconced in alcohol and oirans.
It’s all Orochi’s doing that Wano is in ruins, and he shows no regret for the destruction he caused to his own land, polluting it and enslaving its people. To make matters worse, he manipulated one of his kin, Kurozumi Kanjuro, to spy on and eventually betray the Nine Red Scabbards, ensuring he couldn’t be stopped by those whose lives he had ruined long ago. However, Orochi met his end during the Onigashima Raid, and in a fitting end, his Yamata no Orochi Devil Fruit allowed him to be beheaded eight times, a sight that was quite satisfying to witness.
3. Sakazuki (Akainu)
A Ruthless Marine Who Killed A Beloved Character
- Debut: Chapter 397 (Manga) Episode 278 (Anime)
During the events of the Ohara Incident flashback, we were first introduced to Sakazuki. In this instance, he was depicted giving the order to destroy a civilian vessel, under the assumption that one of the Ohara Archeologists might have been hiding aboard. This act instantly portrayed him as cold-hearted and violent. Moreover, it served as an illustration of his unwavering belief in Absolute Justice – Sakazuki is relentless in his pursuit to eliminate all wickedness from the world, regardless of the consequences.
In the Marineford Arc, Admiral Sakazuki played a pivotal role, standing at the helm during the Summit War on behalf of the Marines. His actions were far from heroic; he mercilessly killed innocent marine soldiers attempting to retreat, attempted to kill Koby when he pleaded for an end to the war, and most heinously, cold-bloodedly murdered Portgas D. Ace in front of Luffy after inciting him. These despicable acts have solidified Sakazuki as one of the coldest and cruelest antagonists within the series. Given his position as Fleet Admiral of the Marines, it’s clear that he poses a significant threat to the Straw Hats and their allies in the coming battles.
2. Saint Jaygarcia Saturn
One Of The Five Elders Is The Most Evil And Cruel Scientist In The World
- Debut: Chapter 233 (Manga) Episode 151 (Anime)
In the world of One Piece, the Five Elders, leaders of the World Government and architects of numerous injustices, are generally disliked characters. Among them, Saint Jaygarcia Saturn is particularly noteworthy due to his significant role in the story. Known as the Warrior God of Science and Defense, he was one of the most ruthless and inhumane scientists throughout the series. Given that he’s a Celestial Dragon, it’s unsurprising that he harbors supremacist views, believing certain races should be subjugated.
Bartholomew Kuma’s recollections revealed a long history of Saturn’s cruel actions. He attacked the young Buccaneer during the God Valley Incident, forced Ginny into marriage with another noble and experimented on her, used blackmail to turn Kuma into a Warlord of the Sea and transformed him into a mindless cyborg slave, threatened the Straw Hats and Doctor Vegapunk while in his giant beast form at Egghead, and ultimately met his end twice: first from Kuma’s punch during the Egghead Arc, and second when Imu took his life for failing to accomplish his goals. Thankfully, Saturn is no longer a threat, and can no longer cause harm to others.
1. Saint Charlos
The Most Despicable Celestial Dragon In The Series
- Debut: Chapter 499 (Manga) Episode 393 (Anime)
Indeed, it’s hard to find characters more detested in “One Piece” than the Celestial Dragons. They are an elite aristocratic class who view everyone else as beneath them, going so far as to wear special helmets to keep from breathing the same air as commoners. However, among all these despised figures, one Celestial Dragon truly stands out as the epitome of their detestable nature – Saint Charlos.
Initially appearing during the Sabaody Archipelago Arc, the character Charlos initially seemed like a spoiled brat, indiscriminately enslaving civilians he encountered, including married women for his vast harem. He also showed bias towards certain species, such as merfolk and fish-men, which led to him attempting to buy Camie as a slave and shooting Hatchan without justification. Despite the passage of two years, Charlos’s unsavory behavior persisted, as he attempted to kidnap and enslave Princess Shirahoshi twice during the Levely. However, there is a positive aspect to Charlos’s repugnant character and actions: his despicable personality has made him a popular target for retribution throughout the series. Notably, Luffy delivered a punch to his face, Mjosgard struck him in the face, and Sai and Leo attacked him on the head. Many fans agree that scenes depicting Charlos’s punishment are some of the most satisfying moments in the series.
