The Early Days

Origins Of Naval Warfare

One Piece: The Evolution of the Navy's Warfare, Explained

Currently in the One Piece storyline, the Navy is a force to be contended with. But it wasn’t always this way. In ancient times, neither the World Government nor the Navy existed. However, to counteract the Ancient Kingdom, 20 kingdoms united to create the present-day World Government. So far, the One Piece world has not revealed much about the combat skills and organization of the Navy from centuries past.

Despite their methods not being noble, it’s clear that they possessed formidable power since they managed to overthrow the Ancient Kingdom. Now, with modern naval technology, it’s intriguing to ponder which version of the Navy – the present one or the one from the past – is stronger. Although the initial strength of the Navy remains a mystery, from the beginning of the One Piece series to the present day, we can see that the Navy has continually progressed in terms of technological advancements.

Using Technology To Reshape The World Order

The Rise Of The Pacifista And The Seraphim

Dr. Vegapunk is clearly the driving force behind the Navy’s significant technological developments. Previously, the Navy relied solely on sail-powered ships, but paddle ships revolutionized naval warfare. Pirates like the Kuja pirates, who had a base in the calm belt, lost some of their previous protection due to this change. Furthermore, as depicted in One Piece Episode 1114, Vegapunk developed GP Flower technology, which won him the Ibel Peace Prize. This innovation causes guns and bullets used by pirates to serve more decorative purposes rather than lethal ones, showcasing the impressive technological strides made by the Navy.

Without a shadow of a doubt, the Navy’s most remarkable leap forward in recent years is the creation of the Seraphim – these formidable machines are engineered from the genetics of diverse devil fruit powers, and they are replicas of the former Sea Lords. Once, the Navy was one of the three dominant forces on our world. But with recent breakthroughs, it’s clear that the Navy now holds two seats of power, or at least has effectively supplanted the Sea Lords, who were previously one of the three great powers, alongside the Sea Emperors and Marines. The Navy demonstrated their technological prowess by replacing the Sea Lords with the Seraphim, indicating that they no longer required pirates in their ranks as these advanced machines are more than capable of assuming the roles once held by the Sea Lords. As a fan, I can’t help but marvel at this incredible evolution!

Through technological progress, the Navy has consistently devised strategies to counter novel and impending dangers. Before the Seraphim, there was the Pacifista – a type of robot engineered using Bartholomew Kuma as a blueprint, since he was undergoing gradual transformation into a cyborg. These robots were equipped with laser-powered attacks and possessed the same physical prowess as Kuma, making them formidable adversaries for pirates during the Marineford War. They wreaked havoc among many pirate forces.

Prior to the dismantling of the Warlord system, the Navy strategically exploited internal conflicts among pirates, their most formidable foes, demonstrating its relentless pursuit of eradicating piracy and its ability to employ unconventional tactics to achieve its goals. The demise of Whitebeard brought about significant transformations within the One Piece universe. Fearing being left behind, Akainu, now holding the position of Fleet Admiral, restructured the Navy to enhance its efficiency and later transferred the Navy’s main base to the New World.

The Future Of Naval Warfare

Would The Adaptation Of Naval Warfare Come To A Halt?

One Piece: The Evolution of the Navy's Warfare, Explained

With pirates growing stronger and more powerful over the seas, it’s likely that the Navy will keep advancing its technology, creating advanced weapons, ships, and possibly integrating robotics and Sea Prism Stone technologies to combat Devil Fruit users. The emergence of the Mother Flame and Ancient Weapons controlled by the World Government also means we can expect an increase in sophisticated weaponry. Yet, the upcoming demise of Vegapunk, a key innovator for the Navy, raises questions about their future development – will they continue to progress without him or rely on his past inventions?
