One Piece: The Monster Trios Explained

Summary

  • The Monster Trios exist in both the Straw Hats and Roger Pirates, highlighting the 3 strongest members in each crew.
  • Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji are the Straw Hats Monster Trio, known for their strength and roles within the crew.
  • Roger, Rayleigh, and Scopper were the Roger Pirates Monster Trio, with each member being legendary in their own right.

In every pirate era, there exists a distinctive group that consistently leads the way, often garnering the majority of the spotlight within the universe known as “One Piece.” Presently, this group is undeniably the Straw Hat Pirates among the Worst Generation; however, in times past, their historical equivalents were the notorious crew of Gol D. Roger, who gained unparalleled fame and wealth by being the only pirate team to locate the One Piece treasure.

Leading each of these crews is a unique trio of members, often referred to by fans as the ‘Monster Trio’. This term traditionally applies to the three main fighters of the Straw Hat crew, but with recent story progressions, it’s also being used to describe the structure of the Roger Pirates. Let’s delve into both versions of the Monster Trios from One Piece to understand what made them so formidable.

The Straw Hats Monster Trio

The Strongest Straw Hats

Zoro’s First Appearance One Piece, Chapter 3, “Introducing Pirate Hunter Zoro”
Sanji’s First Appearance One Piece, Chapter 43, “Introducing Sanji”

In my passionate fandom perspective, it’s undeniable that the legendary trio known as the Modern-day Behemoths has left an indelible mark on the series. Their monstrous abilities have earned them this title, with numerous characters acknowledging their extraordinary powers. As for who holds the top spot in terms of strength, there seems to be a lively debate among fans. At present, Jimbei boasts a higher bounty than Sanji, which has sparked conversations about his place among the series’ mightiest warriors. But let’s not forget, for now at least, the Monster Trio is synonymous with Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji!

The leader of the Straw Hat crew is an extraordinary character named Monkey D. Luffy. Originally a naive youngster with just a straw hat to call his own, he has since grown into a revered figure, one of the Four Sea Emperors. Despite his peculiar rubber abilities, he has demonstrated their incredible potential through innovative uses. His most impressive display was in his Gear 5 transformation, which transformed him into the Sun God Nika, a legendary warrior from myth.

Hero? No! We are pirates! I love heroes but I don’t wanna be one!

From the very beginning of the series, Roronoa Zoro has been a constant presence and was the initial member to join Luffy’s Straw Hat pirate team officially. Originally known for his bounty hunting skills targeting pirates, Zoro’s lifelong aspiration is to attain the title of the world’s greatest swordsman, aiming to prove himself worthy of standing beside his captain, who aspires to be the future Pirate King. Reflecting his bond with Luffy and his position within the crew, in every fight, Zoro usually faces off against the second strongest member of the opposing crew, right after their captain.

In simpler terms, Sanji, a part of the trio known as the Straw Hat Pirates’ Monster Trio, initially joined as a cook but has proven himself to be one of the most powerful members after Luffy and Zoro (and possibly Jimbei). Due to his actions, he is often referred to as Luffy’s ‘left-wing’. This role is reminiscent of Scopper Gaban, and in Chapter 1139, it was shown that these two share striking similarities. Despite a difficult childhood as a Vinsmoke, Sanji eventually found his place with the Straw Hats and is generally regarded as the third-strongest member.

The Roger Pirates Monster Trio

The Crew of the Pirate King

Roger’s First Appearance One Piece, Chapter 1, “Romance Dawn – The Dawn of Adventure”
Rayleigh’s First Appearance One Piece, Chapter 19, “Devil Fruit”
Scopper’s First Appearance One Piece, Chapter 19, “Devil Fruit”

In a similar fashion, there was one exceptional pirate crew that ruled the high seas during their era – the legendary Roger’s Band of Mates. They are often revered as the greatest crew in piracy lore because they were the sole ones to discover the legendary One Piece treasure, an achievement unparalleled for 800 years. This feat earned Roger the unique title of the only King of Pirates throughout history and his comrades the distinction of being the ones who assisted him in achieving such a remarkable status.

The leader of this team, going by the name Gol D. Roger, is the standout figure. He’s the one who initially assembled the crew. Regrettably, details about Roger’s past are scarce; all we have are hints that he shared striking resemblances with Luffy and harbored a similar ambition. This shared dream eventually propelled him to unearth the world’s true history and discover Joyboy’s legendary treasure. Upon achieving this monumental feat, he was bestowed the title of Pirate King.

If you’re after my hidden riches, they’re all yours! I’ve carefully amassed them in a single location. It’s up to you now to locate the spot where they wait!

The voyage of the Roger Pirates started when Roger encountered Silvers Rayleigh on a ship and invited him to sail with them. Over time, Rayleigh rose through the ranks to become Roger’s second-in-command, earning a reputation nearly as legendary as Roger himself. Known as the ‘Dark King’, Rayleigh was recognized as one of history’s strongest characters, holding immense respect even among those who were Admirals. Even in his later years, he remained an admired figure worthy of comparison to the highest-ranking officials.

In chapter 1139 of the manga, it was recently unveiled that Roger, Rayleigh, and another equally renowned figure named Scopper Gaban traveled together. These three legends were often side by side, with Gaban possessing strength comparable to Rayleigh, making him nearly as powerful as Roger. After his retirement, Gaban resided on Elbaf, but in his prime, he was among the strongest characters globally. The structure of Roger’s crew suggests that the current Monster Trio may have a similar future ahead.
