One Piece: The New Marines At The End Of The Series, Explained

This article contains spoilers from One Piece‘s Final Saga.

Summary

  • The Marines are led by Akainu, who believes in Absolute Justice.
  • The current corrupt order of the Marines needs reform.
  • Young Marines like Koby will rise to form a new, just organization.

In the fictional world of One Piece, the Marines represent one of the Three Great Powers, playing a crucial role in countering piracy at sea and reducing overall criminal activity. Since the series’ inception, the Marines have been a significant force, with their influence growing as the story progresses. Although they appear to be heroes due to their responsibility of controlling pirates, they are intricate characters, with some leaning towards villainy and others exhibiting outright evil behavior.

The current state of the Marines is deeply corrupt from within, calling for necessary reform at the end of One Piece’s narrative. Upon resolution of the Great War, there’s a strong probability that readers will encounter an overhauled version of the Marines, who play a significant role in ensuring global tranquility.

The Current Corrupt Order Of The Marines

  • The Marines Are Led By Akainu
  • Akainu Believes In Absolutely Justice

During the Golden Age of Piracy, the primary objective of the Marines was to limit pirate power. With Roger’s famous speech revealing the One Piece treasure, an unprecedented number of pirates took to the seas in search of it. Faced with a swarm of pirates, the Marines were tasked with curbing their expansion. At first glance, this objective seems justifiable as pirates are notorious for their lawlessness and causing trouble wherever they go. However, the actions of the Marines, such as apprehending pirates, may not be as simple or beneficial as it appears on paper. The truth is far more complex.

There is no place for pirates in the world! – Akainu

In the world of One Piece, just as in our own, pirates can display both virtuous and unscrupulous behavior. The Straw Hat Pirates, who are heroes saving multiple countries, demonstrate this duality among pirates. Similarly, members of the Marine force can also exhibit good or bad traits. It’s important to note that not every Marine is inherently good, nor are they all evil. There are specific Marines that fans have a strong dislike for, yet some do possess a modicum of honor.

In some cases, there are Marines who are willing to take lives for what they perceive as justice. These individuals follow a principle called Absolute Justice, which has historically led them to sacrifice innocent lives if it advances their cause. Characters like Akainu and Onigumo fall into this category, reflecting a deeply alarming mindset. However, it’s important to note that the philosophy of Absolute Justice is problematic in itself. Unfortunately, there are far more insidious issues within the Navy, many of which originate from the highest echelons – the World Government. The World Government, established by 20 Rulers post-Void Century war, aims to assert control globally and erase the memory of the Great War of 100 years. This powerful organization is deeply corrupt, with the Marines serving as its military arm, making them, in essence, complicit in its questionable actions at present.

Why The Marines Need A Reform

The Marines Need To Be A Truly Just Organization

In my perspective as an ardent observer, it’s undeniable that the Marines, though pursuing a noble cause, find themselves on the wrong end of things due to their allegiance to the World Government. This power-hungry entity has ruled the world for countless centuries and is largely perceived as evil. The Marines serving as the military arm of this government is not something to boast about. When the truth finally surfaces about the World Government, it’s hard to imagine that the Marines will continue supporting them without question. It’s natural that many within their ranks will start questioning the government’s authority. Therefore, it seems evident that the Marines themselves require a significant overhaul and change in their core values.

They can’t keep obeying the World Government blindly, as it would erode their own authority entirely. To prevent being perceived as an unlawful force pursuing criminals, they should instead tackle corruption within their own forces first, ensuring they act legitimately.

You can’t figure everything out unless you look at it from the outside. – Kuzan

It’s highly probable that the Marines will assist in dismantling the corrupt administration of the World Government. Once this occurs and the Great War concludes, it’s expected that changes for the better will be noticeable among the Marine ranks.

It’s unlikely that all members of the Marine organization will disappear if it collapses. Those who uphold the ideology of Absolute Justice may find themselves in conflict with the honorable Marines, potentially led by Fujitora. The rest are likely to lose their authority and power within the organization, and may be permanently barred from any future association with it.

The New Face Of The Marines In One Piece

The Young Generation Raised By Garp Will Be The Future

If the Marines were to stage a rebellion against the very World Government they were established by in One Piece, spectators might witness a dramatically transformed Navy. This is due to the eradication of corruption within the World Government. The possibility of a new government emerging under Dragon’s leadership implies internal shifts within the Navy as well.

Initially, members associated with Absolute Justice would be eliminated and forced out of the organization. It’s unlikely that characters such as Sakazuki and Onigumo, along with others, would remain within the Marines when the World Government ceases to exist. Given their alleged malevolent nature, it seems they would align themselves with the old regime.

It’s important to note that veterans such as Sengoku and Garp, along with others, may no longer be involved in the organization. Consequently, it’s the younger generation who will step up, and here we find Koby taking center stage. This group includes Koby, Prince Grus, Kujaku, Hibari, and Tashigi, who are poised to lead the new Navy.

By this stage in the narrative, their strength would have significantly increased, making them eligible for positions such as Vice Admirals or Admirals. Notably, Smoker is poised to become a prominent figure within the Marine force and could ascend to the role of Fleet Admiral. This revamped Marine organization promises justice, leaving fans eagerly anticipating its impact when the Marines eventually collapse.
