This article contains spoilers from One Piece chapter 1122.

Characterized by the main figure of “One Piece,” Monkey D. Luffy, is nearing the fulfillment of his goal and seizing the coveted “One Piece.” Through time, he’s progressed from one level to another, transforming into an exceptionally formidable sea-faring outlaw. Luffy’s evolution is impressive, and his current standing among the Yonko serves as evidence. He is undeniably one of the mightiest characters that fans have encountered within the narrative, such that reaching his current stature would represent the pinnacle of success for most other pirates.

Luffy aspires to surpass the ordinary and accomplish what seems impossible by pursuing the One Piece. Furthermore, he has even greater ambitions for the future, as followers believe that he is the one who will fulfill the unfinished promise left by Joy Boy. Therefore, fans understand that Luffy sets his goals high and must reach his full potential to exceed them. Understanding how this translates to his Haki, or his willpower, is crucial.

Luffy’s Mastery Of All The Haki Types

  • User Of Three Haki Types
  • User Of Advanced Haki

As a gamer, I’ve always been captivated by Luffy’s Haki skills. It wasn’t just anyone who trained him; it was the legendary Rayleigh! In just 18 months under his tutelage, Luffy grasped the fundamentals of all three types of Haki – Observation Haki that gave me a sixth sense, Armament Haki for both offensive and defensive maneuvers, and Conqueror’s Haki, which let me impose my willpower on others. After that, he spent six more months honing his skills on his own. You see, Luffy was born with all three types of Haki, a clear sign of his ambitious dream to rule as the Pirate King – a goal he’s made crystal clear since day one of our adventure together.

Only Haki can conquer all! – Kaido

Following the time jump in “One Piece,” Luffy continued to enhance his abilities, which included a notable improvement in his Haki. During the Wano Country storyline, Luffy’s Haki saw an extraordinary growth. In fact, two out of his three types of Haki progressed significantly during this period. Luffy was able to master the advanced forms of Armament Haki and Conqueror’s Haki. To perfect the former, Luffy trained in the Prisoner Mine, learning to inflict internal damage using Ryuo. The latter required another defeat at Kaido’s hands on the rooftop of Onigashima, after which Luffy discovered that Conqueror’s Haki could be infused. By infusing this potent Haki, Luffy increased his strength significantly, although his initial use of it was somewhat clumsy. However, by the time we reached the Egghead Island Arc, Luffy had become quite proficient in wielding this power.

Luffy Still Has A Lot To Improve Upon In Haki

While Great, Luffy Needs To Strengthen Himself Further

There is no denying the fact that Luffy is among the elites of the One Piece world, and that his Haki is certainly among the strongest that fans have seen in the series. After all, he is among the very few characters who managed to infuse Conqueror’s Haki in the first place. Luffy’s control over Conqueror’s Infusion also grew significantly with time. Luffy struggled to keep up with Kaido at first, but he was also able to match him with his infusion later, which suggested that as the fight dragged on, his control over it increased. In the end, Luffy managed to combine his Conqueror’s Haki with his devil fruit powers, dealing a telling blow to Kaido, and defeating him for good. But, this clearly was not enough because Luffy’s future enemies were even tougher than Kaido.

In the Egghead Island storyline, viewers witnessed the enigmatic Five Elders who appear indestructible, as they cannot die regardless of the harm inflicted upon them. These elders possess immense power, and while Luffy’s strength can rival theirs, he is unable to defeat them because they continuously regenerate. No matter if Luffy attacks them with his most potent Gear 5 techniques or Haki-enhanced attacks, victory remains elusive for him. It was at this point that fans came to understand that Luffy needs to advance further in order to conquer these Elders, and the secret to defeating them lies in mastering Haki.

Listen, Emet! I’ll store my strongest Haki inside you. – Joy Boy

In chapter 1122 of “One Piece,” viewers witnessed Ei-chan using his ultimate move against the elders in combat. He pulled on a string hidden within him, containing Haki from Joy Boy. When Ei-chan released this Haki, spectators were treated to an amazing sight: this Haki knocked out all the elders from their Yokai forms, effectively neutralizing them. Simultaneously, it also nullified Saturn’s summoning by canceling his Yokai abilities. This demonstrates that Joy Boy’s Haki is far more potent than anything previously seen in the story, and it’s a level Luffy needs to reach if he hopes to defeat the Five Elders or even match up to Imu. Unless Luffy reaches this point, he won’t be able to overcome the Five Elders, and he certainly can’t compare to Imu.

The Peak Of Luffy’s Haki In One Piece

Luffy Has To Get To Joy Boy’s Level And Grow Even Stronger

One Piece: The Peak Of Luffy's Haki, Explained

It’s been noted by fans that Luffy and Joy Boy share many characteristics. Over time, connections have been made between them. Crucially, it’s understood that Luffy must achieve what Joy Boy couldn’t. This suggests that if Luffy wants to match Joy Boy’s performance, he needs to reach comparable levels as Joy Boy. If he intends to surpass him, then he has to go above and beyond. This emphasizes the need for Luffy to further develop his Haki abilities. Although Luffy is an expert in Conqueror’s Haki, he still lags behind what Joy Boy demonstrated recently. To reach the next level of strength, Luffy needs to focus on enhancing his Haki significantly and accomplish feats comparable to those shown by Joy Boy.

Still, fans know that eventually, Luffy will get there. This is simply down to the fact that he has to fight against the Elders, and potentially even Imu later down the line. The only way Luffy can pull that off is if he upgrades upon his Haki. Luffy has to put in effort starting now, and work on his Haki going forward. Perhaps, his fight against Shanks is where he will learn more about how to stabilize Haki, and how to bring out its very best. For now, Luffy is far from the strongest in One Piece, and, in many ways, this just makes the story even more interesting.
