One Piece: Unmasking the Most Deceptive Characters

Summary

  • Arlong deceives Nami by reneging on their deal, showcasing his two-faced nature.
  • Orochi hides his manipulative nature behind a facade of innocence to achieve his goals.
  • Katakuri maintains a formidable persona to conceal his embarrassing, fun-loving side, born out of childhood trauma.

In the realm of One Piece, where treacherous pirates and menacing marines reign, it’s quite common for characters to employ deceit as a survival tactic. This two-faced approach can aid a character in escaping tricky situations or forging lethal alliances by concealing their true motives. Essentially, being two-faced means that a character presents themselves one way to gain someone’s trust, but they are actually quite different when alone.

In the world of One Piece, it can be challenging to find straightforward and truthful characters. Consequently, many characters have exhibited dishonesty for their individual reasons. However, being duplicitous can sometimes make a character more intriguing, as fans are left guessing about their hidden motivations. These are the most cunning One Piece characters who have skillfully used their intelligence and acting abilities to deceive those they’ve encountered during their journeys.

1. Arlong

Arlong Proved He Was Not Above Saying One Thing And Meaning Another When He Tricked Nami

  • First Appearance: Episode 31

As a passionate fish-human hybrid, Arlong harbors an intense loathing towards humans that runs deep within my core. This animosity propelled me to sow fear and chaos among the residents of Cocoyasi Village as soon as I arrived with my unruly pirate crew. A tragic incident occurred when Arlong took the life of Nami’s mother, leading him to propose a deal: if Nami could gather enough berries, he would relinquish control over her village and put an end to his reign of terror forever.

Though he might be extremely cruel, there’s a fleeting impression that Arlong could honor a pledge – until Nami abandons the Straw Hats and delivers the promised treasure. Without a second thought, Arlong broke his promise and was content to make Nami draw maps for him, but luckily, Luffy and the crew intervened at the right moment.

2. Orochi

The Cowardly Shogun Of Wano Is A Master At Lying To Achieve His Malicious Goals

  • First Appearance: Episode 931

Ever since I witnessed the degradation and tragic demise of my father at a tender age in the land of Wano, a raging fire of vengeance ignited within me. To exact retribution, I knew I had to ascend to the position of shogun. By maintaining an innocent and submissive facade while masterfully orchestrating events behind the scenes, I managed to orchestrate the death of Kouzuki Oden, paving the way for my ultimate goal.

In the series, Orochi is known for being one of the most fearful characters, always putting on a show when in peril to protect himself. This allows him not only to survive but also to inflict maximum pain and misery throughout Wano. Initially, he appeared as a pitiable young man, but upon closer inspection, a much darker character was revealed beneath his facade.

3. Katakuri

Katakuri Tries To Maintain A Strong And Sturdy Persona To Hide A More Embarrasing Side Of Himself

  • First Appearance: Episode 825

Among Big Mom’s top three military commanders, Katakuri maintains a formidable image. To preserve this reputation, he often comes across as a stern and unyielding warrior, seemingly unaffected by the chaos around him. However, while this demeanor is genuine, it also serves as a mask for his playful and food-loving nature that bubbles beneath the surface.

Growing up, Katakuri was constantly tormented due to his unusually large mouth, which expanded from an excessive love for eating donuts. In retaliation, he once attacked some bullies who had ridiculed him, leading to his sister, Brulee, being targeted. To conceal this volatile aspect of himself, Katakuri now always wears a white scarf over his mouth and cultivates a brooding image to fit his high-ranking role within the crew.

4. Kouzuki Hiyori

To Survive In Orochi’s Wano, Hiyori Became Someone Else Entirely

  • First Appearance: Episode 892

After Kaido and Orochi seized power in Wano and destroyed Oden Castle as a sign of their tyranny, Momonosuke and some of Oden’s Scabbards were mysteriously transported 20 years into the future. However, this wasn’t the case for Hiyori, the sister of future-shogun Momonosuke and daughter of Oden. She found herself in a lawless Wano with Kawamatsu the Kappa as her only guardian. But when Kawamatsu was captured by Kaido’s pirates, she bravely decided to assume a new identity to navigate this dangerous world on her own.

In a new identity, Hiyori transformed into Komurasaki, a captivating courtesan who garnered not only the affection of Wano’s people but also the cunning Orochi, who frequently extended invitations for her to attend his feasts. Though steadfast in her allegiance to the samurai, Hiyori skillfully assumed this role. The instant she heard Momonosuke’s name, her cover was shattered, revealing how eagerly she had been anticipating such encouraging tidings.

5. X Drake

Drake Will Tell The Enemy Anything They Want To Hear So That He Can Learn More About Them For The Marines

  • First Appearance: Episode 392

When Drake is working undercover for the marines, he assumes the role of a member of the Worst Generation. In reality, he’s more like a hired gun. This disguise helps him blend in with the enemy, allowing him to join groups like the Tobi Roppo. Though his character remains largely unchanged, he appears committed to the mission and seems dedicated to it, despite being essentially a gun for hire.

In truth, Drake belongs to an enigmatic marine unit known as SWORD. This clandestine group is primarily tasked with executing covert espionage operations while maintaining a low profile. As part of his role, Drake has deceived most characters he’s met during his adventures, concealing his true identity.

6. Denjiro

Denjiro Stayed Close To Orochi Until The Other Scabbards Finally Arrived

  • First Appearance: Episode 909

Just as Hiyori assumed a new persona during her absence from Wano, Denjiro also adopted a different identity for the 20-year interval before the Red Scabbards returned. However, his new character was so distinct that it’s challenging to recognize the connection between the two versions of him. While posing as Kyoshiro, Denjiro portrayed himself as a laid-back and carefree protector of Orochi who eagerly engaged in swordplay with anyone who dared challenge him or the shogun.

During the actual commencement of the Onigashima raid, Denjiro chose to unveil his true persona, creating a stunning revelation to initiate the heart of Wano’s storyline. For an astounding 20 years, he patiently waited before his remarkable acting skills managed to deceive Orochi effectively, allowing the plan to unfold successfully.

7. Bon Clay

Bon Clay Can Assume The Form Of Anyone He Can Imagine, Allowing Him To Take On Multiple Faces

  • First Appearance: Episode 78

The Mane Mane Fruit gives Bon Clay the ability to take on the appearance of anyone he physically touches, making him capable of displaying two distinct personas. Typically, his actions reflect those of his usual self, but there are instances where he has successfully mimicked the behavior of the person he’s copying, as evident when he attempted to impersonate Nami during their confrontation with Sanji in Alabasta.

Essentially, Bon Clay embodies kindness, thoughtfulness, and unwavering loyalty, yet he possesses the ability, both literally and metaphorically, to change his appearance when necessary. This skill was also demonstrated by Higurashi, an old hag who aided Orochi in gaining power, showing that this fruit can be used to deceive almost anyone. Although Bon Clay isn’t as malicious as she is, the art of deceiving people seems ingrained in his very being.

8. Pudding

Sanji’s Upbeat Bride Turned Out To Be More Violent And Sadistic Than He Ever Could Have Imagined

  • First Appearance: Episode 571

Initially, when Sanji encounters Pudding, who is intended to be his spouse due to a prearranged marriage orchestrated by Big Mom, she appears as a charming and thoughtful young woman. Surprisingly, she seems less eccentric than her fellow siblings, providing Sanji with a glimmer of hope that he might discover joy once more after being compelled to depart from his crew. However, his dreams of a promising future are dashed when he accidentally listens to Pudding ridiculing him within the privacy of her residence.

It’s revealed that Pudding was assigned to assassinate Sanji during their wedding ceremony by Big Mom. Despite having a strained relationship with her mother, Pudding seemed to take pleasure in the idea of eliminating the Straw Hat member. However, when Sanji compliments Pudding on her third eye, she unexpectedly develops feelings for the talented chef. This leads to a sort of dual personality, where she would either be lavishing praise upon him or fantasizing about harming him, like planning to cut him up as if he were a wedding cake.
