One Piece Villains That Need Redemption Arcs

One Piece Villains That Need Redemption Arcs

Key Takeaways

  • Some One Piece villains have the potential for redemption, like Alvida and Foxy.
  • Kaku stands out as the most likely Cipher Pol member to switch sides in the future.
  • Characters like Senor Pink and Admiral Kizaru showed signs of changing allegiances.

As a longtime fan of One Piece, I must say that the series has always been known for its captivating storylines and intriguing characters. Amongst the countless pirates and Marines we’ve encountered throughout the Grand Line, there are some who stand out as potential candidates for redemption arcs.

In the series One Piece, there’s a multitude of villainous characters, fitting for such an extensive saga that has been running for over 27 years. What sets these antagonists apart is their post-defeat development: some remain unrepentant, while others transitioned into unlikely allies for Luffy and his crew in subsequent storylines.

However, we must consider those characters who find themselves in a transitional phase. There are undeniably some One Piece characters ripe for a change of allegiance, but so far, that transformation has yet to occur. Consequently, it is crucial that these eight villains undergo their own redemption arcs, and ideally, this should happen promptly rather than being delayed.

8 Alvida

The First Villain That Luffy Ever Defeated

  • First Appearance: Chapter 2 (Manga) Episode 1 (Anime)

Over time, the storyline of One Piece has grown more intense, impacting its numerous antagonists as well. This shift in mood has led some early series pirate villains, such as Buggy, Hachi, Helmeppo and others, to switch sides and join forces with the Straw Hat Pirates. However, it’s quite surprising that Alvida, the very first adversary encountered by Monkey D. Luffy, hasn’t reformed her ways just yet.

Despite initially appearing quite malevolent, Alvida isn’t a significant danger and appears to have the potential for redemption. This is particularly evident after she joined the light-hearted Buggy Pirates and stayed with them through their growth. It would be intriguing to imagine her fighting alongside Luffy someday, and even more so, to see her reconnecting with Koby given how much he has grown in strength since their first meeting.

7 Foxy

He Was Always More Of A Humorous Villain Anyway

  • First Appearance: Chapter 305 (Manga) Episode 207 (Anime)

In the Long Ring Long Land storyline, a humorous section focused on pirate contests called the Davy Back Fight, Foxy, the Silver Fox was first presented as the primary adversary. Following Luffy’s victory over him, the Foxy Pirates faded from the narrative for quite some time, only reappearing briefly during the Egghead Arc in a surprise cameo.

Foxy might seem both crafty and greedy, yet he doesn’t possess a truly malevolent nature, nor does he pose a significant danger to the Straw Hat Pirates. Like Buggy, he often serves as comic relief in his villainous role. This suggests that he could potentially switch sides and aid the heroes in an upcoming storyline. Just as Wapol, who is quite despicable, received a chance at redemption, so too might Foxy.

6 Kaku

The Nicest Cipher Pol Agent

  • First Appearance: Chapter 323 (Manga) Episode 230 (Anime)

It’s undeniable that Kaku stands out among the members of CP9 as one of the most well-known and cherished. His fame isn’t solely due to his distinctive appearance and peculiar Devil Fruit, but also because he often appears to be the kinder Cipher Pol agent and potentially the one who might consider leaving the organization in the future.

Instead of his fellow CP0 member Rob Lucci, who is unremorseful and beyond redemption as an assassin, Kaku appears to be a character that has embarked on a path towards redemption years ago: He openly acknowledged his satisfaction while disguising himself as a shipwright at Galley-La Company, subsequently formed a temporary alliance with Luffy and Zoro during the Egghead Arc, and seemed friendly with Stussy, who eventually granted him freedom after her betrayal. It seems that Kaku no longer fits within CP0, and it’s highly likely he will switch sides in the not-so-distant future.

5 Gecko Moria

A Tragic Figure That Most Likely Wants To Take Revenge On Blackbeard

  • First Appearance: Chapter 449 (Manga) Episode 343(Anime)

It’s easy to forget that the former Warlord of the Sea, Gecko Moria, has a tragic backstory that is supposed to make him a foil to Monkey D. Luffy. After Kaido killed his entire crew, he founded the Thriller Bark Pirates and, with the help of Doctor Hogback, prioritized the creation of mindless zombies that could be used as disposable fodder.er. However, despite his design, theme, and personality, Moria was shown to be quite fond of his remaining crewmates and basically treated them as family.

Beyond simply showing Perona’s unwavering allegiance to her captain, this situation was further emphasized when Gecko Moria stormed Hachinosu in pursuit of Absalom. His anger became evident when Blackbeard revealed that his crew had murdered Absalom and taken his Devil Fruit. It was later discovered that Moria managed to escape imprisonment with the aid of Perona and Koby. Given that the Straw Hat Pirates are destined to cross paths with the Blackbeard Pirates in the near future, it’s possible that Moria may attempt to forge an alliance with Luffy’s crew as a means to seek revenge for his fallen comrade. To make matters worse, the World Government is utilizing a Seraphim clone modeled after Moria, adding another layer of complexity to this developing situation.

4 Magellan

He Is Way Too Honorable For The World Government

  • First Appearance: Chapter 528 (Manga) Episode 425 (Anime)

The Impel Down Arc introduced us to Magellan, the commanding warden of the infamous prison, who possessed the deadly poisonous powers of the Doku Doku no Mi. However, despite his menacing appearance and potent Devil Fruit, Magellan was surprisingly honorable in his role as a warden, expressing disapproval towards mindless killing of prisoners and calling out Shiryu for misusing his power.

Following Luffy’s and other prisoners’ successful escape from Impel Down, he inadvertently forfeited all he had, as he opted to step down from his position and assume the role of vice warden instead. Moreover, his recent brief appearance suggests concern over an impending catastrophic flood that endangers the One Piece world, a threat that the World Government has been keeping hidden from the populace. There’s always been an air about Magellan that hinted at potential betrayal, and it seems this shift might occur quite soon.

3 Senor Pink

His Tragic Backstory Resonated With Most Fans

  • First Appearance: Chapter 702 (Manga) Episode 632 (Anime)

Senor Pink, without a doubt, is an intriguing character from the world of One Piece, showcasing Eiichiro Oda’s remarkable storytelling skills. Originally depicted as a disrespectful and unsavory pirate, his character took a significant turn after his intense battle with Franky and the emotional flashback revealing his deeply moving, tragic past. This transformation has made him one of the beloved minor antagonists in the series.

It’s crucial to mention that Senior Pink appears to be accountable for the fate of his wife, Russian, as he was the one responsible. However, given his awareness of this situation, it seems likely that he is trying to make amends following Franky’s victory over him and the disbandment of the Donquixote Pirates. After all, they had agreed to share a drink together in the future. In the Egghead Arc, it was uncovered that the World Government exploited his Lineage Factor to replicate his Devil Fruit. Therefore, if more prisoners from Impel Down are released in the coming days, Senior Pink might find himself fighting alongside our favorite hard-boiled cyborg in future battles.

2 Page One And Ulti

The Goofiest Members Of The Beasts Pirates Don’t Know Any Better

One Piece Villains That Need Redemption Arcs
  • First Appearance (Page One): Chapter 929 (Manga) Episode 923 (Anime)
  • First Appearance (Ulti): Chapter 977 (Manga) Episode 982 (Anime)

As a die-hard fan, I’ve noticed an intriguing pattern in the series: many secondary antagonistic crews have characters who eventually switch sides and become allies later on, like Hachi from the Arlong Pirates or Baby 5 from the Donquixote Pirates. Given this pattern, it’s speculated by many of us fans that Page One and his elder sister, Ulti, are prime candidates among the Beasts Pirates who might undergo a redemption arc in the coming chapters.

As a gamer, I’ve got to say, Page One and Ulti were definitely formidable opponents for Nami and Usopp during the Raid on Onigashima, but they weren’t the most despicable members of their crew. In fact, they often provided some much-needed humor in the storyline. But let’s not forget, Oda later revealed that Kaido took them under his wing when they were just kids, so their life as part of a wicked pirate crew is all they’ve ever known. There’s still hope for them to change their paths someday. And it seems like Ulti, who showed a more aggressive side compared to her brother, could really benefit from a chance at redemption.

1 Admiral Kizaru (Borsalino)

He’s Growing More And More Impatient With The World Government

One Piece Villains That Need Redemption Arcs
  • First Appearance: Chapter 504 (Manga) Episode 398 (Anime)

As a dedicated follower of One Piece, I’ve always seen Admiral Kizaru (whose true identity is Borsalino) as an unwavering figure, strictly adhering to the commands of the Marines and the World Government. However, his allegiance appears to have shifted during the Egghead Arc, in a surprising twist that has left me utterly intrigued.

Following an incident where he was compelled to aid in the death of a cherished friend, Doctor Vegapunk, and was ordered to destroy the island that nurtured countless relationships for him, Kizaru exhibited a stark change in attitude towards Sakazuki, hinting at potential signs of discontent with his superiors. Remarkably, it’s been revealed that Borsalino was the one who provided Luffy with food while he was recuperating, suggesting that his redemption arc might have commenced unnoticed by the audience.
