One Piece: Why Rocks D. Xebec Is Oda’s Best Written Post-timeskip Character

Watching One Piece unfold, I’m constantly amazed by the sheer number of characters. It’s not really surprising, though, considering the manga is over 1100 chapters long! You’d think keeping track of so many people would be a nightmare for the author, but Eiichiro Oda really excels at it. He’s given so much attention and detail to practically everyone, making each character feel important.

Eiichiro Oda often develops his supporting characters so well that they sometimes feel more compelling than the main characters. A prime example is Rocks D. Xebec. Though hinted at throughout the story, we didn’t see his full impact until the Elbaf arc.

Rocks D. Xebec’s Backstory Was Amazing

Rocks D. Xebec is largely defined by his mysterious past. Throughout most of the story, he was simply known as “Rocks,” and those aware of his full name referred to him as “Rocks D. Xebec.” However, it’s eventually discovered that he intentionally concealed his true identity from the World Government.

I learned that Xebec wasn’t his original name – he was actually Davy D. Xebec. Apparently, he came from a family line, the Davys, that the World Government had been hunting for generations, labeling them as traitors. It makes sense that he, and others who managed to survive, decided to change their names to stay hidden and avoid being caught.

Xebec kept his family history a secret from everyone on his crew. He only confided in Harald, whom he considered his closest friend, revealing his true origins to him alone.

Xebec Was Incredibly Powerful

Honestly, Rocks D. Xebec isn’t just a character with a cool history – he was a total powerhouse! It’s still mind-blowing to me that he actually made it into Marijoa and lived to tell the tale. And it wasn’t just surviving, he actually took down an Admiral and somehow got into Imu’s room, even daring to challenge the world’s ruler! Knowing he was descended from Davy D. Jones really explains his drive, though. Like his ancestor, Xebec wasn’t just about treasure, he truly wanted to rule everything.

To make his ambition a reality, Xebec started assembling a crew of incredibly strong fighters, forming the Rocks Pirates. He believed that with such powerful allies, he could achieve anything. Despite having many formidable crewmates, Xebec himself was far and away the strongest – a true giant of his time. In battle, he used his sword, enhancing each blow with Haki to maximize its impact. His attacks were so devastating they were likened to cannon fire, and he famously shattered the Gates of Justice with his sword. Being struck by one of his blows would likely be fatal for an ordinary person.

Xebec Loved His Family A Lot

Although many people thought of Xebec as a ruthless man, he deeply cared for his family. When he discovered the World Government was planning the Hunting Competition on God Valley, he immediately hurried back home. He loved his family and would do anything to protect them. It was heartbreaking to witness his reaction when Imu used Domi Reversi on him and forced him to consider killing them; he was overcome with tears.

Xebec Is The Best Post-Timeskip Character In One Piece

Considering everything we’ve seen, Rocks D. Xebec is easily the most compelling character Oda has created since the time skip in One Piece. He instantly surpassed all others with a single flashback, solidifying his position as the best.

  • Not only is he a well-developed and skillfully written character, but viewers also really love him.

Xebec has a good chance of becoming one of the ten most popular characters in the next Global Popularity Poll. Because the Elbaf arc is still happening, fans will likely remember his actions well when they vote, increasing his chances. Voting is currently open and will stay open for some time, with the results being revealed on One Piece Day in August 2026.
