Over the years, their friendship has grown incredibly strong, rivaling even their connection with Luffy.

Regardless of their contrasting traits, they possess an extraordinary level of admiration and respect for one another, although neither would openly acknowledge it. Remarkably, their paths crossed early in Zoro’s journey, and despite his high self-assurance, he endured a devastating loss against the former Sea Warlord.

Indeed, that was a pivotal instant for Zoro. Not only did he grasp the essence of what it takes to be an exceptional swordsman, but more importantly, he earned Mihawk’s admiration – a feat not often achieved by many others. What makes this moment intriguing is that Mihawk would eventually agree to guide Zoro during their two-year break, leading Zoro to become stronger and powerful enough to safeguard his comrades during their New World adventure. Although Zoro’s ambition remains unaltered, with Mihawk still standing as a formidable challenge ahead, it is clear that he holds his mentor in great esteem. After all, Mihawk imparted crucial skills to him, such as the use of Haki and advanced sword-fighting strategies.

2. Shimotsuki Kuina

A Beloved Childhood Friend Who Directly Inspired His Lifelong Dream

As a young lad learning at Isshin Dojo, Zoro encountered a girl named Shimotsuki Kuina and swiftly developed a competitive spirit towards her due to her superior swordsmanship skills. On countless occasions (2001 times in total), she managed to best him in their duels. However, this rivalry eventually morphed into a strong bond of friendship as Kuina doubted she could attain the title of the World’s Greatest Swordsman because she was female. Zoro vehemently disagreed with her viewpoint and convinced her that one day, either of them would achieve that esteemed title.

Sadly, it was just a few days after that unfortunate incident when Kuina lost her life in an accident. This loss left an enormous void in Zoro’s life, as evidenced by his continued possession of her cherished sword, Wado Ichimonji, and his unwavering determination to become the World’s Greatest Swordsman—a vow he made to honor her memory. As a result, whenever Zoro faces formidable opponents such as Mihawk or King, he is reminded of Kuina. Furthermore, it was his intimate bond with Kuina that initially took him aback upon encountering Tashigi, and it also subtly drew him towards her over time.

His Captain Will Help Him Achieve His Dream And Change The Entire World

Nothing will deter him until his captain claims the title and brings about worldwide transformation with it.

It’s clear as day that Zoro wouldn’t have made much progress without Luffy, and the same goes for Luffy without Zoro. They rely on each other deeply, often finding themselves in sync during life-threatening situations without needing to exchange words. Moreover, they perfectly balance one another; Luffy’s optimism frequently rescues Zoro, while Zoro’s stoic demeanor encourages Luffy to grow as a more responsible and serious captain. Over time, their bond has deepened into a heartwarming friendship that stands out in the annals of their adventures – from the Baratie Arc, Sabaody Archipelago Arc, to the Wano Country Arc, they’ve proven themselves best friends in many challenging situations.
