One Pokemon Legends: Z-A Character May Be a Red Herring

During the July 2025 Pokemon Presents event, The Pokemon Company unveiled various announcements for several upcoming Pokemon games like Pokemon Friends, Pokemon Champions, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, as well as the next major Pokemon game, Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Footage for Pokemon Legends: Z-A revealed several features in the upcoming title, such as battling wild Mega Evolved Pokemon, taking on Alpha Pokemon, and customizing trainers. Game Freak also introduced numerous new characters players will meet in Z-A, but one character, Corbeau, could potentially be a hint for Z-A’s main villain.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Corbeau Explained

In Pokemon Legends: Z-A, players engage in nightly Pokemon combat across Lumiose City for the Z-A Royale competition. Initially starting at the highest rank of ‘Z’, trainers must progressively battle their way down to ‘A’ to earn a single wish. Throughout this tournament, players encounter notable characters like Urbain and Taunie from Hotel Z, as well as the enigmatic Corbeau who leads the ominous Rust Syndicate. This group seems to specialize in Pokemon types such as Steel and Poison, given their headquarters adorned with Steelixes, Kingambits, Overqwils, and poison-themed decorations.

As a devoted fan, I’d say it’s clear that Corbeau has a knack for employing Poison-type Pokémon in the Z-A Royale, demonstrated by his use of Arbok in combat. Furthermore, he’s been seen wearing a Mega Evolution Key Stone on his Rust Syndicate badge, hinting at his potential to control a Mega Steelix or even a new Steel/Poison-type Mega Evolution.

Despite the ominous demeanor of Corbeau and the Rust Syndicate, rumors swirl that they collaborate with Team MZ, a compact team striving to keep Lumiose City tranquil by assisting in various ways, such as battling numerous Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon. The specific nature of Corbeau’s alliance with Team MZ remains a mystery at this time.

The Potential Secrecy Surrounding Z-A’s Main Antagonist

According to Corbeau and his group, the Rust Syndicate, it seems they are the primary antagonistic force in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, similar to Team Rocket and Team Flare. Corbeau himself resembles a mob boss, often seen inviting people to his headquarters, conducting business from an imposing desk, and having a large enforcer deliver updates and intimidate guests into obeying Corbeau’s commands. However, this may just be a facade or diversion to prevent players from uncovering the true identity of Z-A‘s antagonist. In the past, Pokemon has not been known for subtle villains; characters like Lysandre were clearly evil from the start. On the contrary, Game Freak has surprised us with unexpected twists in their antagonists before, as seen with Lusamine and Chairman Rose.

In the games Pokemon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon, Guzma from Team Skull was used as a distraction to divert players’ attention away from the covert nefarious activities of the Aether Foundation. Similarly, Corbeau might be misunderstood, as the Rust Syndicate may not be as villainous as they appear at first glance. Despite seeming to work with Team MZ and taking financial matters seriously, Corbeau could still be working in Lumiose City’s best interests, albeit with a more business-oriented approach compared to characters like AZ or Professor Sycamore.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Possible Main Antagonist

Among the various characters introduced in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, one stands out as potentially a secret antagonist, masking malicious intentions beneath altruistic actions: the CEO of Quasartico Inc., Jett. The company, Quasartico Inc., is said to oversee Lumiose City’s urban renewal project, with Jett advocating for stronger bonds between Pokémon and people. However, this could be a ruse for more sinister motives. Since the renovation started, there have been unexpected appearances of Mega Crystal clusters and Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon, causing turmoil in the city. It is speculated that Jett may be a former Team Flare member, exploiting the renewal project as a smokescreen to construct an army of Mega-Evolved Pokémon with the aim of reducing the population and realizing Lysandre’s vision of a “beautiful” world by eliminating most people.
