One Pokemon TCG Pocket Type Could Upend the Meta in 2025

As a seasoned Pokémon TCG player with over two decades of battling under my belt, I must say that the current meta for Pokemon TCG Pocket has been an exhilarating yet challenging journey. The rise of Mewtwo EX and Gardevoir’s interaction has undeniably shaken up the playing field, leaving many of us yearning for a change.

After its debut in late October, the strategy for Pokemon TCG Pocket has solidified around a handful of prominent decks. Some of the strongest decks in Pokemon TCG Pocket center on cards such as Misty and her ability to swiftly provide energy to powerhouses like Blastoise EX or Starmie EX. Other top-ranking decks emphasize cards like Pikachu EX and Mewtwo EX, seldom encountering obstacles while they rule games with one type consistently subdued within the Genetic Apex set.

Among the best decks in Pokemon TCG Pocket, none rival the consistent strength of those utilizing Mewtwo EX and Gardevoir’s synergy. Gardevoir’s skill enables it to add an additional Psychic energy to the player’s active Pokemon, reducing the two energies removed by Mewtwo EX’s Psydrive attack to virtually nothing. This combination wouldn’t be so challenging if players could swiftly eliminate the opponent’s Mewtwo EX before it can establish itself, but the scarcity of potent Darkness-type cards to inflict super effective damage upon it makes this task much more arduous.

Pokemon TCG Pocket’s Next Set Needs to Come Out Swinging with Darkness Types

Darkness Types Are Under-Represented in Genetic Apex

At present, the selection of Darkness-type cards in the Pokemon TCG Pocket is quite restricted. So far, the only Darkness-type cards available are:

  • Ekans
  • Arbok
  • Nidoran F
  • Nidorina
  • Nidoqueen
  • Nidoran M
  • Nidorino
  • Nidoking
  • Zubat
  • Golbat
  • Grimer
  • Muk
  • Koffing
  • Weezing

Among these cards, none possess EX variants. As a result, cards such as Muk, Weezing, and Arbok become the most potent choices for players to combat formidable Psychic types like Mewtwo EX, since there are no stronger alternatives available.

In Pokemon TCG Pocket , the Darkness type is used to represent both Poison and Dark types.

A successful approach for employing Darkness cards in the current game environment involves utilizing Weezing and Muk to inflict Poison on your adversary’s creature, enhancing the damage dealt due to Muk’s Venoshock ability. Another viable tactic is to immobilize an opponent’s active card using Arbok’s Corner attack, preventing them from retreating on their next turn and possibly securing a Knock Out. Nevertheless, without the extra strength and resilience of an EX card, it may prove challenging to execute these combinations before being defeated by your adversary.

Stronger Darkness Type Cards Are Needed to Squash the Mewtwo EX Meta

In the current version of Pokemon TCG Pocket, Darkness types are scarcely present, primarily because Genetic Apex predominantly focuses on Generation 1 creatures. This bias towards Gen 1 critters can be seen clearly as all existing Darkness cards are actually Poison-type monsters from Generation 1, which means powerful Dark types are absent in the game’s metagame. However, with a new Pokemon TCG Pocket set scheduled for release on January 29, 2025, it seems possible that the balance might shift soon, potentially weakening the strong Psychic duo of Mewtwo EX and Gardevoir.

It’s uncertain what the upcoming set after Genetic Apex will involve, but if it continues the focus on Gen 1 as the previous one did, we can expect Gen 2 to be the main theme of this new set. If that’s true, the Pokemon TCG Pocket may soon receive potent strategies to counter Mewtwo EX decks, possibly introducing cards like Tyranitar EX or Houndoom EX. The dominance of Mewtwo EX in the current Pokemon TCG Pocket meta might be coming to an end when the next major set for the game is released early next year, which could potentially dethrone Mewtwo EX as the leader.

In the upcoming set, there could be a change where Crobat and Ariados, currently classified as Poison types, might also be categorized as Darkness types.
