On its debut day, only ten games were offered for the Nintendo Switch, but one standout title, “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” managed to overshadow the console’s relatively weak launch lineup with its exceptional quality. Interestingly enough, “Breath of the Wild” had been in development long before the Switch was ever announced; it was initially slated as a flagship game for the Nintendo Wii U. However, due to several hurdles during the game’s production, its release was delayed until it synchronized with the launch of the Switch. Remarkably, “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” was released on both the Wii U and the Switch in 2017, marking the beginning of what would ultimately prove to be one of Nintendo’s most prosperous console eras.
In a significant milestone, “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” has surpassed 30 million copies sold globally, making it the highest-selling game in the Zelda series. This record-breaking achievement places it comfortably at the top among its peers. The game garnered near-flawless reviews from numerous gaming platforms, earning itself the second position on OpenCritic’s prestigious “best games of all time” list. Given these accolades, it’s challenging to refute the claim that “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” stands among the greatest console launch titles ever produced, alongside iconic games like “Halo: Combat Evolved” and “Super Mario 64”. Intriguingly, Nintendo is said to be planning a remastered edition of this remarkable game for its upcoming next-generation console.
A Breath of the Wild Remaster for the Switch 2 is Reportedly in the Works
There have been whispers about a possible remastered version of “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” for the upcoming Nintendo Switch successor since late 2023. Eurogamer was the first to break this news. Following Gamescom 2023, sources within Eurogamer suggested that during the event, the new Nintendo console had been secretly demonstrated to developers. The report further stated that one of the games showcased for the console was an advanced version of “Breath of the Wild”. However, Eurogamer cautioned that this upgraded “Zelda” demonstration was merely a technical showcase and did not imply that a remastered version of the game would be made publicly available.
In late 2024, the rumor of a potential port for “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” on the Nintendo Switch resurfaced, this time from a reputable source named RyanFromTheBronx (formerly Midori). On Twitter, he hinted at a new game in development at Nintendo with the code name “U-King-O.” Initially, this didn’t appear to be of much importance. However, some astute Twitter users noticed that “U-King” had been used by Nintendo for “Breath of the Wild” during its development stages. The “-O” suffix led them to speculate that a new version of the game might be underway. This theory was supported by another insider, Samus Hunter, in December 2024.
Nintendo Should Bundle the Rumored BOTW Remaster With Tears of the Kingdom
Refreshing “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” would be an excellent decision, given its hardware limitations on the present Nintendo Switch. Taking this potential rerun to new heights, Nintendo could bundle it with a Switch 2 version of the 2023 sequel’s “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom,” which is merely a rumor at this point. If they were to release a combined package of these two games at a reduced price for the Switch 2, it would likely fly off the shelves, particularly if they could manage to run both games stably at 1440p and 60 FPS on the new hardware.
It’s unlikely that Nintendo will sell games like “Breath of the Wild” and its sequel “Tears of the Kingdom” as a combined package for around $80 to $100, given their tendency towards higher pricing. In contrast, exclusives on other consoles such as “Uncharted 4” and “Gears 5” are often available at very low prices, but Nintendo’s major Switch games typically stay within the $30-$40 range. If Nintendo were to remaster both “Breath of the Wild” and “Tears of the Kingdom” for the Switch 2, it seems they would either sell them together at a premium price or separately.
