One Unexpected Pokemon is Suddenly Setting a New Record in 2026

As a huge Pokémon fan, I’m already so excited for 2026! It’s the 30th anniversary, and everything suggests we’re finally getting Generation 10 this year. But even before the year really gets going, one Pokémon has already made history for the franchise – and in a pretty unexpected way! It’s set a new record for the series, which is awesome to see.

In addition to the expected release of the next main series game, potentially called Pokemon Wind and Waves, a new spin-off game called Pokemon Pokopia is also planned. For those who want even more Pokemon in 2026, Pokemon Champions, a battle simulator for Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and mobile devices, will also be released. While we’ll learn more about these plans in the coming months, a special version of Hisuian Electrode is currently generating buzz as the first of its kind in the series.

Hisuian Electrode is Breaking a Major Pokemon Tradition to Kick Off 2026

The mobile game Pokemon Masters EX is known for doing things differently than other Pokemon games. As a ‘gacha’ game for mobile devices, it lets players collect and team up with famous trainers and their Pokemon, called Sync Pairs, to battle. Unlike typical Pokemon battles, every fight in Pokemon Masters EX is 3v3, and features special Buddy Moves. This creates a unique gameplay experience that breaks away from established Pokemon traditions.

The massive success predicted for Pokémon in 2026 is connected to updates in Pokémon Masters EX. A new sync pair, featuring Sygna Suit Ball Guy and Hisuian Electrode, was released on January 1st as part of the ‘Fishing Up a New Year’ event, alongside the possibility of obtaining Lana and Shiny Dondozo. While Ball Guy has appeared as a playable character in Pokémon Masters EX before with different partners, Hisuian Electrode in this new sync pair has a unique ability never before seen for that Pokémon.

Lt. Surge has teamed up with Electrode in Pokemon Masters EX before, but this is the first time players can battle with Hisuian Electrode alongside him.

Hisuian Electrode Marks the First Case of a Pokemon Introduced After Sword and Shield Being Able to Dynamax

Hisuian Electrode is unique because it can Dynamax during battles, a special ability that wasn’t available to Pokémon introduced after the Sword and Shield games. Dynamaxing was first introduced in Pokémon Sword and Shield and is normally limited to Pokémon from the Galar region. This is because Dynamaxing relies on special Power Spots that appeared after Eternatus was defeated. Until Hisuian Electrode, no Pokémon introduced after Sword and Shield could Dynamax in the main Pokémon games.

Hisuian Electrode is a unique Pokémon. Although its origins are in the Hisui region, established in the game Pokémon Legends: Arceus which is set in the past, the game featuring this form of Electrode wasn’t released until after Pokémon Sword and Shield. This makes it special because it’s the first Pokémon introduced after Dynamax was removed from the main series games that can still Dynamax, breaking a long-standing pattern.

Okay, so Duraludon was one of those Pokémon you could Dynamax in Sword and Shield, which was pretty cool. But it’s new evolution, Archaludon, which came out in the Indigo Disk DLC for Scarlet and Violet, can’t Dynamax at all! It’s a little weird that the evolved form lost that ability, honestly.

Hisuian Electrode is the 4th Instance of a Pokemon Not Available in Sword and Shield Having the Ability to Dynamax

  • Breloom
  • Eelektross
  • Camerupt
  • Hisuian Electrode

Hisuian Electrode isn’t the only Pokémon introduced after Sword and Shield to gain Dynamax powers in Pokémon Masters EX. Breloom and its trainer Greta were the first Pokémon unavailable in Sword and Shield to receive this ability back in July 2024. Following that, in November 2024, Sygna Suit Emmet and Eelektross were released, making Eelektross the first of its kind able to Dynamax. More recently, in November 2025, Academy Kabu and Camerupt joined the roster with Dynamax capabilities as well.

Hisuian Electrode, owned by Sygna Suit Ball Guy, has become the first Pokémon introduced after Sword and Shield to gain the ability to Dynamax, paving the way for other newer Pokémon to do the same. While Pokémon Masters EX often introduces unique twists, the upcoming game Pokémon Champions seems likely to expand these possibilities even further. Pokémon Champions will include both Mega Evolution and Terastallization, so it’s probable that Dynamax, Gigantamax, and Z-Moves will also make a return. For now, Hisuian Electrode is the first to break a long-standing rule, but with the Pokémon franchise’s 30th anniversary coming up, we can expect more surprises.
