As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the past few years have been nothing short of a golden age for the Persona series. With Atlus consistently dropping new titles on an almost annual basis, it’s become a staple in my gaming rotation. However, I must admit, I find it peculiar that Atlus hasn’t shared much about the future of the franchise post-2024.
Over the last few years, the Persona series has been quite prolific, with a steady stream of new content almost every year. During this console generation, Atlus, the Japanese developer, has released four significant new installments in the franchise worldwide. In 2020, they introduced Persona 5 Royal on PS4. The following year, they launched the musou-style hack-and-slash game Persona 5 Strikers in the West. For 2023, Atlus released the strategy RPG spin-off, Persona 5 Tactica, on all platforms. Lastly, in 2024, they presented a remake of the third entry in the Persona franchise, Persona 3 Reload, on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. To top it off, Atlus made the Persona series available across multiple platforms in 2022 with the release of Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 5 Royal on all modern systems.
Due to the recent high activity of the “Persona” series, it’s quite unexpected that Atlus hasn’t disclosed much about its future. The last significant update related to Persona was in March of this year when they announced the development of the “Persona 3 Reload: Episode Aigis” expansion. Apart from “P3R” and its mentioned DLC, which were released early last month, Atlus has primarily focused on promoting and releasing other non-Persona games from their catalog in 2024, such as “Unicorn Overlord,” “Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance,” and most recently, “Metaphor: ReFantazio.” With the current schedule for the franchise appearing sparse, it seems possible that Atlus may unveil some unannounced Persona games later in this year.
Atlus Could Reveal Some New Persona Games This Year To Fill Up Its Release Calendar
Persona 5: The Phantom X Seems Ripe For a Worldwide Reveal in 2024
Currently, only one “Persona” title, “Persona 5: The Phantom X,” hasn’t had a full global launch yet. Commonly referred to as P5X, this is an RPG spin-off from Atlus’s main series, introducing gacha game mechanics – a first for the franchise in this manner. Although it has been technically released on iOS, Android, and Windows PC platforms, its availability is limited to certain East Asian regions at present.
In April 2024, the game titled “Persona 5: The Phantom X” was introduced in China, South Korea, Macau, and Taiwan. It’s also expected to launch in Japan soon. While there’s no official word yet on an international release or English localization of “P5X”, Atlus might excite fans by announcing a worldwide launch for the game at one of their upcoming events this year, such as The Game Awards 2024.
Persona 6 is Long Overdue for an Official Announcement
Regarding The Game Awards 2024, it’s quite likely that we might catch a glimpse of the eagerly anticipated game, Persona 6. Although Atlus hasn’t explicitly confirmed its development, hints from job postings and interviews with developers over the years suggest that there could indeed be a sixth mainline Persona installment. With the original Persona 5 turning ten by 2026, it seems fitting for Atlus to provide an update on Persona 6 at this year’s event. Even a brief, tantalizing teaser trailer showcasing just the game’s logo could ignite anticipation among gamers.
Atlus May Have Some Surprise Announcements in Store for 2024
If Atlus plans to showcase new “Persona” games this year, we’re curious if they might both unveil “Persona 6” and “Persona 5: The Phantom X” at the same event, or if they’ll save one for a later date like 2025. But remember, Atlus could surprise us by revealing neither of these games and instead announcing something unexpected, perhaps even a “Persona Q3”. No matter what, there’s a multitude of possibilities regarding potential “Persona” game announcements.
