One Year Later, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Still Has Some Loose Ends

One Year Later, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Still Has Some Loose Ends

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must confess that I was initially thrilled for the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The hype was palpable, and the game seemed to be on track for greatness. However, much like the infamous Venom in the comics, this sequel has left a bitter taste in my gaming mouth.

On October 20th, 2024, Insomniac Games’ “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2” celebrated its first anniversary. This game continues the storyline from the original and the spin-off title, “Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.” The sequel had a lot of excitement building up to its release and was generally well-received by critics. However, over time, it became more divisive than initially expected, mainly because of how the story was handled. Yet, two days after the game’s anniversary, the divisiveness is hardly an issue, as the future of “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2” seems uncertain due to plans for the series’ third and final installment.

The original release of Marvel’s Spider-Man in 2018 significantly impacted the gaming industry and was widely acclaimed as one of the top superhero games. A mere month after its launch, an additional chapter called The City That Never Sleeps was unveiled, offering players more content to explore. However, unlike its predecessor, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has not delivered any substantial DLC since its release, even on the first anniversary of its launch. Despite numerous rumors and leaks about potential DLC for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, as well as hints within the game suggesting post-launch content, Insomniac Games has officially confirmed that no further story expansions are planned, leaving many plot threads unresolved.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s Lack of DLC Is Disappointing

Carnage DLC Was Heavily Hinted at in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

A compelling possibility for additional content in “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2” can be discerned directly from the game itself without relying on leaks or rumors to bolster its authenticity. The storyline, aptly named “The Flame,” presents within the game where Peter Parker teams up with Yuri Watanabe (Wraith) to dismantle a dangerous cult called “The Flame.” As the quest concludes, players are introduced to who appears to be Cletus Kassady, the man behind the infamous Spider-Man villain Carnage.

Initially, it was thought that the game “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2” might eventually include downloadable content (DLC) featuring Carnage. However, a disappointing leak in December 2023 hinted that Carnage could be a villain in Insomniac’s unannounced Venom game instead. Interestingly, Miles Morales in “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2” will have a suit themed around Carnage, which strengthens the possibility that the game might have included Carnage as a DLC villain at some point. Unfortunately, recent news has confirmed that no DLC is planned for “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2,” leaving the storyline open to speculation.

Beetle and Spider-Verse DLC Was Potentially Leaked

Following a recent leak suggesting the development of a Venom game by Insomniac, another leak has hinted at potential DLC for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 featuring characters Beetle and the Spider-Verse. The leaked list identified these expansions as “Beetle Invasion” and “Spider-Verse Anomaly.” Given the limited information available, if the leak is indeed accurate, it seems that Beetle may be incorporated into Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and there could be an introduction to the Spider-Verse as well.

While rumored DLCs might stem from leaked information, they carry less weight compared to the Carnage storyline that has been established for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

As a dedicated gamer diving headfirst into the Marvel universe, I can’t help but feel a tinge of concern about the absence of DLC for Marvel Spider-Man 2. The prospect of jamming Carnage, Beetle, and the Spider-Verse into the third installment of Marvel’s Spider-Man, alongside Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, and perhaps even Hobgoblin, risks overloading the game just like Spider-Man 3, a title that was criticized for its multitude of subplots. At the very least, I can only hope that Insomniac has a plan to wrap up the Carnage storyline from Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and abandon any other planned ones. Adapting this in the leaked Venom game instead of the third mainline title might pose challenges given Peter and Miles’ strong connection with the Flame, but fitting Carnage into Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 could also exacerbate the subplot issue.
