Summary
- Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny is being remastered for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One in 2025.
- The remaster will be released at some point later in 2025.
At the conclusion of their recent showcase, Capcom revealed that they are re-working Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny, a title initially launched in 2002 for PlayStation 2. The original game garnered mainly favorable reviews and sold well upon release. However, it has been confined to the PS2 since then, with no hint from Capcom about remastering plans – until this moment.
In 2018, Capcom re-released a modernized version of “Onimusha: Warlords,” enabling players to enjoy the classic game on more recent systems. However, unverified sources suggested that the remastered “Onimusha” didn’t sell well, which made fans doubtful about whether the sequels would receive similar treatment. In fact, many speculated that the “Onimusha” series had essentially come to an end.
After a long wait of approximately seven years since its last remaster, the game “Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny” is now set to receive a remaster. This announcement was made during Capcom’s most recent Spotlight event, indicating that the game will be released in 2025, although no exact date has been specified yet. Interestingly, Capcom plans to release native versions of this game exclusively for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One. As a result, while “Onimusha 2” can still be played on PS5 and Xbox Series X through backward compatibility, it won’t have a separate, dedicated release on these newer platforms for reasons yet unknown.
Onimusha 2 Remaster Confirmed for 2025
It appears that the remastered version of “Onimusha 2” seems to be following the path set by the first “Onimusha” remaster. This implies that it won’t offer significant new content or major enhancements, but will primarily enhance the visuals with a high-definition facelift. Given this, fans of “Onimusha” might speculate that other games in the series could potentially receive remasters in the future, although no official announcements about this have been made yet as of now.
Despite the recent remastering of Onimusha 2, most of the Onimusha series is still confined to older gaming systems. Following Onimusha 2, there was Onimusha Tactics on the Game Boy Advance, a fighting game spin-off called Onimusha Blade Warriors for the PS2, and the highly-rated sequel Onimusha 2: Demon Siege. Additionally, there was Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, which also received significant acclaim in 2006.
It’s uncertain whether any of the older Onimusha games will be remastered at this point, but in the interim, a fresh installment in the series has been officially announced: Onimusha: Way of the Sword, set to release in 2026, marking the first new game in two decades.
