Summary
- Prices of original Onimusha games are spiking after the announcement of a new title at the 2024 Game Awards.
- Capcom’s reveal of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, caused a surge of interest in older titles.
- While some PS2-era Onimusha games are increasing in price, digital versions on Xbox and PlayStation remain affordable.
The cost for some older Onimusha games has been rising since Capcom announced Onimusha: Way of the Sword at the 2024 Game Awards. Onimusha was one of Capcom’s top action series during the early to mid 2000s, but it hasn’t been as prominent for the last two decades. The latest significant game in the series to come out was Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams in 2006 for PlayStation 2. However, with the recent announcement of a new game, there’s been a resurgence of interest in the franchise.
At the December Game Awards, Capcom made a significant impact, not only unveiling the sequel to Okami, but also announcing a new installment of Onimusha, titled Way of the Sword. The in-game demo and its planned release in 2026 generated quite a buzz, being one of the most discussed reveals during the event. Additionally, Capcom showcased a remastered version of the 2002 game, Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny, at Sony’s State of Play, which is scheduled for release on May 23 across Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and PC.
As a die-hard Onimusha enthusiast, it’s exhilarating to witness the fanfare resurface after years of silence since the 2000s! However, it appears that the resale value of these cherished classics on platforms like eBay has been escalating. Interestingly, the first two games in the series, Onimusha: Warlords and Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny, have remained relatively affordable, typically priced between $10 and $15. It’s the later instalments of this beloved franchise that are experiencing a price hike. For instance, Onimusha 3: Demon Siege from 2004 is fetching prices between $25 and $30, while Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams is reaching almost $60 for pre-owned copies.
Prices of Original PS2 Onimusha Games Are Skyrocketing
It’s fortunate that certain games, like the “Onimusha” series, can still be found and purchased at their original prices on Xbox and PlayStation’s online marketplaces. For instance, the 2018 remaster of “Onimusha: Warlords” has seen a significant price hike on resale platforms from approximately $15 to as much as $80. However, the same remastered version is priced at a more reasonable $20 on Xbox and PlayStation. The upcoming “Onimusha 2” remaster will be available for $30 when it releases in May. At this time, only the first two mainline “Onimusha” games are or will be available on PlayStation and Xbox. So, if you’re keen to play “Onimusha 3” or “Dawn of Dreams,” you might need to buy second-hand copies or keep your fingers crossed for potential remasters or ports in the future.
As a fellow gaming enthusiast, I’m super hyped about the upcoming remaster of Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny this May! With a brand new mainline entry set for next year, it seems like we’re in store for quite the Onimusha resurgence over the coming months. Maybe we’ll get some juicy insights about Onimusha: Way of the Sword during Summer Game Fest in June. Until then, I hope the prices of the original games start to dip as newcomers look to dive into this fantastic franchise!
