Capcom has added a challenging new mode to the recently updated version of Onimusha: Warlords remaster, exciting players who are either eager to show off their skills or face a tougher test. Originally released in 2001 for PlayStation 2, Onimusha: Warlords was the first game in the Onimusha series, and its remastered version came out almost two decades later in 2019. The story takes place during Japan’s Sengoku era, where samurai Samanosuke Akechi battles against Nobunaga Oda’s troops.
If you’re a fan of immersing yourself in the rich history and culture of feudal Japan, like many modern gamers who enjoyed ‘Assassin’s Creed Shadows’, you might want to give ‘Onimusha: Warlords’ a try, as it’s one of the many games following Ubisoft’s success in this genre. Excitingly, ‘Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny’ is getting a remaster, and during The Game Awards 2024 event in December, Capcom announced a brand new game in the series titled ‘Onimusha: Way of the Sword’.
Warlords was confirmed to offer a new Hell difficulty mode from the start screen. This mode is extremely challenging, with enemy attacks instantly killing players regardless of attack strength. Capcom stated that a Talisman can be used to revive players in this mode, and completing it will earn you the “Hell” Honor. Furthermore, the update includes support for new display languages such as Korean, Polish, and Latin American Spanish. The remastered version of Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny has a set release date, and Capcom also announced that pre-orders for the remaster are now open.

A Capcom producer expresses hope for more remastered versions of the Onimusha series in the upcoming years, and fans are eagerly suggesting specific games they’d like to see. The name Gemma Onimusha has been frequently brought up following the developer’s announcement of Hell Mode updates, with some requesting Gemma-related content as DLC, while others call for modern remakes of Onimusha 3 and Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams. Another common demand is the inclusion of an option to skip cutscenes, as many players find the long scenes after losing to a boss frustrating.
The game titled “Onimusha: Way of the Sword” unveiled a fresh trailer at the beginning of this year, highlighting the upcoming title’s gameplay and a new protagonist inspired by the renowned movie star Toshiro Mifune. Slated for a 2026 launch, “Way of the Sword” chronicles the adventures of Musashi Miyamoto as he confronts Genma in the historic city of Kyoto during the Edo period. Gamers can anticipate engaging in fierce battles and utilizing distinctive abilities such as the Oni gauntlet throughout their journey.
