Capcom recently unveiled a fresh trailer for “Onimusha: The Path of the Sword,” providing insights into the gameplay and the historical background of its main character, Musashi Miyamoto. Although it’s been some time since we’ve seen a mainline “Onimusha” game, given Capcom’s current momentum in their release plan, this might be the ideal moment for “Onimusha: The Path of the Sword.

The Onimusha series originated in 2001 with the release of Onimusha: Warlords. Despite not receiving much buzz lately in relation to Capcom’s upcoming releases, it ranks among Capcom’s top-selling games. The new Onimusha project seems to be a fresh start, shifting its narrative away from Samanosuke Akechi and offering both new players and longtime fans an opportunity to jump in without prior knowledge.

During the PlayStation State of Play event on February 12th, a fresh trailer for “Onimusha: Way of the Sword” was debuted, providing players an insight into what awaits them when it releases in 2026. The trailer combines gameplay and cutscenes to offer a glimpse of the challenges that lie ahead and introduces Musashi Miyamoto, who seems eager for battle. This character appears to be modeled after the famous Japanese swordsman from the Edo period with the same name, as demonstrated by the double-bladed stance featured in the gameplay.

Onimusha: Way of The Sword Reveals its Protagonist and Gameplay

Onimusha: Way of the Sword presents a unique blend of responsive, action-packed swordplay combined with tactical positioning, as depicted in this trailer. Miyamoto is seen skillfully deflecting multiple enemies before launching into more aggressive attacks, suggesting that defensive strategies might take center stage. Given that Miyamoto frequently finds himself outnumbered in combat situations, it seems that he’ll need to employ cunning tactics to navigate these encounters effectively.

In the gameplay, Miyamoto can be seen lifting tables to act as a shield and hurling enemies onto breakable furniture in some parts. He’s often depicted using an Oni gauntlet throughout the game, although it appears that Capcom might save more details for later releases. The cutscenes suggest a humorous, youthful Musashi Miyamoto who seems to have much to learn on his journey. Some viewers note that this game’s storyline may occur before the 2023 Onimusha anime, but it isn’t yet clear if there is a direct connection between these series. Despite Capcom revealing little so far, fans are eagerly awaiting more information about Onimusha: Way of the Sword.
