Open-World Games Officially Bigger Than Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 is a highly acclaimed open-world game, frequently praised for its immersive and detailed futuristic city, Night City. The game world isn’t just the massive, multi-layered city itself, but also the surrounding Badlands area. Night City takes up about half of the explorable map, making Cyberpunk 2077’s overall map quite large. But just how big is it compared to other open-world games?

Comparing the size of open-world game maps can be difficult, so this list uses a different approach: it measures how long it takes to walk across each game’s entire map. Luckily, content creators like How Big is the Map? and Sonny Evans have already done this for many games! It takes just under three hours to walk across Cyberpunk 2077 and its surrounding areas, which is longer than it takes to cross The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s Velen and Novigrad (about one hour). While not a perfect method – walking speeds and map features vary between games – this gives a good idea of relative size. Here are some open-world games that are officially larger than Cyberpunk 2077, and therefore take even longer to cross on foot without loading screens.

Elden Ring

A Truly Epic Journey Across a Gigantic World

As a huge fan, I can tell you Elden Ring is seriously massive! It took me way longer to finish than Cyberpunk 2077, and the world itself is just so much bigger and more varied. The Lands Between are incredible – you’ve got these huge, sprawling legacy dungeons, like entire cities such as Leyndell, the Royal Capital, and massive areas to explore underground. It’s a beautiful place, and there’s always something new to discover around every corner.

On foot, it takes players about three and a half hours to travel across the main part of the Lands Between. The complete game world is even larger, including many big dungeons and areas you can only reach with teleportation. Fortunately, you can use your spectral steed, Torrent, to explore this massive world much faster.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Among the Biggest in the Series, Known for Its Huge Maps

Considering its size and scope, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla deserves a higher ranking. It’s the longest game in the series, featuring multiple large, explorable areas—including Britain, Norway, and America (Vinland)—even without any downloadable content. The game also includes the mythical realms of Asgard and Jotunheim, all designed as expansive maps. Players can travel quickly through these areas using various mounts, similar to what’s available in Elden Ring.

Even just the main map in Valhalla, which depicts Britain, is larger than the entire world of Cyberpunk 2077, taking more than three hours to walk across. This makes sense because Valhalla recreates an entire country with multiple cities to explore, unlike Cyberpunk 2077, which focuses on a single city. However, none of the cities in Valhalla are as large or detailed as Night City.

Ghost Recon Wildlands

An Entire Explorable Country Is No Joke

Similar to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Ghost Recon Wildlands is set across the entire country of Bolivia—a fictionalized, modern version with a huge variety of landscapes. You’ll find everything from cities and small towns to mountains, deserts, and forests. The game’s map is massive, one of the largest Ubisoft has ever created. On average, it would take players about four and a half hours to walk across Bolivia in Wildlands, which is a remarkable feat few open-world games can claim.

Seriously, playing Ghost Recon Wildlands, it totally makes sense why Ubisoft made the map so huge. It’s built for playing with friends, and they really want you to feel like you can go anywhere. You’re not just driving around in cars; you can grab helicopters or even planes and parachute in wherever you want! If they’d shrunk Bolivia down, it would’ve felt cramped and fake, and honestly, it wouldn’t have had that same awesome feeling of exploring a massive open world.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora

A Chunk of Pandora Roughly Twice as Big as Cyberpunk 2077

Surprisingly, Ubisoft’s Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora features a world even larger than Wildlands. The team at Massive Entertainment has created a huge portion of Pandora, making it one of the biggest open-world environments you can explore without any loading screens. It would take around five hours to walk across the map – almost twice as long as it takes to cross Cyberpunk 2077 – and the entire journey is filled with beautifully detailed scenery, unique environments, plants, and animals that fans of James Cameron’s world will recognize.

Inspired by the epic scale and sense of adventure from the films, Frontiers of Pandora lets players bond with and ride incredible mounts – including flying creatures like Ikrans and Banshees – to travel quickly across the world. The game offers a massive and detailed recreation of Pandora, even larger than the open world in Cyberpunk 2077, allowing Avatar fans to fully immerse themselves in the environment.

Just Cause 3

Unmatched for Its Scope Among Traditional Open-World Games

While games like Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Ghost Recon have large open worlds, the Just Cause series takes it to another level. Just Cause is famous for its massive, tropical environments that are designed for over-the-top action and explosions. The games boast some of the biggest maps available, with Just Cause 3 being particularly expansive.

The world of Just Cause 3 is huge! If you tried to walk across the entire map of this fictional Mediterranean island, it would take over eight hours – a really long trek. In that same amount of time, you could walk back and forth across the map of Cyberpunk 2077 almost three times. Luckily, Just Cause 3 is designed for fast travel, letting you use vehicles like cars, helicopters, and planes, along with a grappling hook and wingsuit, to quickly cover large distances – something you can’t do in Cyberpunk 2077.
